US F-1 visa Interview experience (denied under 221 b failure to qualify other than ties to home country)

Country: Pakistan
F1 Visa Rejected — 214(b) — Need Advice on Reapplication

Got my F1 visa rejected today for University of Michigan's MSI program. Wanted to share my experience and get feedback on what went wrong and how to fix it for reapplication.

Background

  • BS Computer Science from LUMS
  • Currently working as a Software Engineer remotely
  • Funding: $80k approved loan from MPower Financing + $32k personal savings (above I-20 requirement)

The Interview

Officer asked why University of Michigan. I started explaining my work experience and how Michigan's program addresses specific gaps I'd encountered professionally. He interrupted me almost immediately and said "let's get straight to the point — why University of Michigan?" I shortened my answer to: the specific focus on data privacy, security, and scalable systems was what I needed and Michigan was the strongest match I found.

He then asked when I graduated and what my GPA was..

Next he asked about funding. I explained I had an $80k approved MPower loan and $32k in personal savings well above the I-20 requirement. I offered to show the approval letter and bank statement. He didn't respond to that and instead asked why I didn't go for a cheaper university. I said I didn't want to compromise on the quality of the program I was attending. He moved on.

He then said all my social media accounts are listed as public on my application. I confirmed. He opened my Instagram and got visibly frustrated — said "how am I supposed to review this when all your posts are hidden?" I had archived all my posts and highlights before the interview without realizing it would be an issue. I apologized and offered to make everything visible by end of day. He didn't respond, took a pause, and handed me a white slip.

The Slip 214(b) — reasons other than failure to show ties to home country.

I need genuine advice and guidance. Was loan the deciding factor or should I go for a cheaper low ranked university? Umich is already in top 50 qs rankings worldwide
