SQE Success Tip #3

Ewige Wiederkunft (Eternal Recurrence) from Nietzsche

Today, I came across one of Nietzsche’s most thought-provoking ideas: Ewige Wiederkunft, or Eternal Recurrence. It genuinely made me pause and reflect, so I wanted to share it with those preparing for the SQE.

Nietzsche imagined a powerful question: What if you had to live this exact day over and over again for eternity? Would you be satisfied with how you prepared SQE today?

Did you revise with focus, or simply spend hours feeling busy? Did you learn from your mistakes, or avoid the topics you found difficult?

The value of this question is not guilt. It is awareness.

Every study session is a choice. Small choices, repeated consistently, shape the solicitor you are becoming.

At the end of today, ask yourself one simple question:

If I had to repeat today forever, would I be proud of how I prepared for the SQE?

If the answer is no, tomorrow is another opportunity to choose differently.

SQE Success Tip #2

Control the Controllables

The Stoic philosopher Epictetus taught that some things are within our control, while others are not. The key to peace of mind is knowing the difference.

As SQE1 approaches, it’s easy to worry about the pass mark, whether the questions will be difficult, or how well other candidates are prepared. The truth is, none of these are within your control.

Instead, focus on what you can control: reading each question carefully, managing your time, applying the correct legal principles, and staying calm under pressure.

This was the mindset I adopted before passing SQE1 on my first attempt in 2024. Whenever I found myself worrying about the outcome, I redirected my attention to the task immediately in front of me, the next question.

Your energy is limited. Don’t waste it on things you cannot change. Invest it in the things that will earn you marks.

SQE Success Tip #1

Don’t Let Late-Night Revision Hurt Your Performance

As the exam approaches, it’s tempting to squeeze in one last revision session before bed. However, intensive studying, especially on a computer, tablet, or phone, can overstimulate your brain and make it harder to get a good night’s sleep.

Instead, spend the last 30–60 minutes winding down. If you still want to revise, briefly review your handwritten notes, summaries, mind maps, or flashcards rather than attempting more MCQs.

This was the approach I took before passing SQE1 on my first attempt in 2024. I genuinely felt that a good night’s sleep helped my brain process and consolidate the legal principles I had studied during the day.

Never underestimate the value of quality sleep. It’s not time away from your preparation. It’s part of your preparation.

Three Weeks Before SQE1: The Emotional Roller Coaster Nobody Talks About

When people talk about SQE1 preparation, they usually focus on study techniques, revision plans, flashcards, and MCQs. What is discussed far less often is the emotional journey during the final weeks before the exam.

Looking back at my own SQE1 journey in 2024, the three weeks before the exam were probably the most emotionally challenging part of the entire process. By that stage, I had already spent months studying while working full-time. Most of the learning had been done, but the pressure was reaching its peak.

One day, I felt confident. I had completed dozens of MCQs, my scores were improving, and concepts that had once seemed confusing were becoming clearer. It felt as though all the months of hard work were finally paying off, and for a few hours I genuinely believed I was ready for the exam.

Then the next day, everything felt different.

I would sit down to do another set of MCQs and feel completely exhausted. The thought of answering yet another question on trusts, criminal law, land law, or professional conduct made me want to walk away from my desk. I remember feeling trapped in what I jokingly called “MCQ hell”. It seemed as though my entire life had become an endless cycle of reading questions, choosing answers, checking explanations, and repeating the process all over again.
