It's time for our first double review, where I review two fanfics in this one review! And I've picked fanfics that are on the smutty side of things, as they both involve Kelly and Ari having sex after their confrontation in the sex rehab class. I picked these two fanfics in particular because of how similar their premises were, but how is the execution? Well, let's find out!

First, we have to cover the POV the narration is written in, which is different for both stories. While “Promise to Kiss me After” is written in the 1st-Person perspective, “Lust” has things written in the 3rd-Person perspective. In terms of which I like better, I usually like to read stories in the 3rd-Person perspective, but in this case, the 1st-Person perspective in “Promise” really helps the reader get into Ari's headspace while the events of the story happen.

That's not to say the 3rd-Person perspective in “Lust” is done badly, as that definitely describes things well enough for you to get the picture. This is where we get into another difference, that being when the sex starts. In “Lust,” Ari and Kelly start going at it shortly after the Sex Rehab class ends, while in “Promise,” it takes a little bit more time before things get smutty.

And now we have our first similarity, which is the location the smut starts out in. Both fanfics have Ari and Kelly start going at it in the girls bathroom. It's what happens as things escalate where another difference crops up, as “Promise” has the two of them stay in the bathroom, while “Lust” has them go to Ari's mother's car to continue their sexual interactions there.

While I prefer the change of scenery that happens in “Lust,” that's not to say that Ari and Kelly staying in the bathroom in “Promise” is a bad thing, especially when you take that story's ending into consideration. At the end, right when Ari and Kelly are really starting to get going, Nicole, Jecka, and Emily show up. And the dialogue that follows is pretty funny, as Ari and Kelly try to cover up what they're doing, with them being unsuccessful on that front, making for a pretty humorous ending to the story.

Speaking of endings, the story of “Promise” ends right as Kelly and Ari are about to go for Round 2 in the bathroom after Nicole, Jecka, and Emily leave. And, to me at least, it feels like the story ends before things can really escalate, especially since the story ends with Kelly being more dominant, whereas Ari was the dominant one throughout the story before this point. It would've been interesting to see what Kelly turning the tables during Round 2 would be like, especially if it was through Ari's eyes like how the story was being told before. But alas, the story ends before we can see what that would've been like.

As for what happens in “Lust,” there's definitely less build-up to the sex, as Ari finds Kelly in the bathroom and asks her about what happened. And then almost immediately after Kelly says she doesn't know, the two of them start going at it. And once the story gets to the smut, it doesn’t stop except to have the characters change the location of where they're gonna have sex. This story also goes farther than “Promise” does in terms of the smut department, with a special mention going to the part where Ari spits in Kelly's mouth and she swallows it, which is a pretty wild moment in the story.

Speaking of the smut, I feel like “Lust” does a better job at describing what's happening, as well as keeping the momentum going once things start. There's also more smut here than there is in “Promise,” so if that's what you're looking for, then “Lust” is definitely the story for you. As for the build-up to said smut, I think “Promise” does that better, as we get to see Ari and Kelly interact with each other more before the sex happens, so it makes the pay-off more satisfying once it happens.

Overall, I think both stories are pretty good. They do a good job keeping Ari and Kelly in-character, and write the smutty stuff well enough. Although, I feel like “Lust” does a better job writing the smut, so if that's what you want out of a story, then this is the one for you. Alternatively, I think “Promise” is good if you want more character interaction and build-up before the smut, as I liked reading the dialogue between Ari and Kelly before they had sex in that story. That doesn't change the fact that both of these stories are definitely worth a read if you have the time and aren't currently at work.

It's time to review the first fanfic of this fandom, and it's one that I've been thinking about quite a bit. “Under the Influence” follows Nicole and Jecka as they try to figure out what a new drug that Emily is selling actually does. Is this a concept that's executed well in the few chapters that are out? Let's find out!

First, I like the mystery in this story about what the drug called Mantis even does to the people who take it. While there's no answer yet due to the fanfic's unfinished nature, there's enough info presented in the story for the reader to make inferences about what the answer to this mystery could be. It's also fun to read as the characters try to figure out what's going on, as they make plans to try and further things, like Nicole having Jecka take the drug while Nicole stays sober to try and see what the effects are. It's interesting to read, and I'm curious to see how this mystery gets solved if the author ever finishes this story.

Another thing I'm curious about is the choose your own adventure angle the story would've gone with if it did continue. For context, the 3rd chapter is the one where Jecka ends up taking the drug with Nicole watching to see what happens, with this taking place in Nicole's bedroom.

At first, the drug seems to do nothing, and Jecka and Nicole hang out like they normally would. But then Jecka starts to get flirty, which leads to Nicole and her having an interesting conversation where they both open up about how they feel about their friendship as well as how they feel about each other. Then, after that, the atmosphere start to change, with Nicole and Jecka seeming like they're about to have sex. 

The chapter ends before they start outright fucking each other, and this is where the choice comes in. You can either choose to have Nicole keep going, or have Nicole stop this from escalating any further. The way this choice works is through a straw poll where people can vote for the choice they want, with the majority vote winning and deciding what happens in the next chapter. 

Now, this is where we can actually predict what might happen next, because out of the two options presented, having Nicole keep going was the winning option, with 80% of the people who voted choosing that. Considering the fanfic's E rating on AO3, which indicates explicit content, I'm pretty sure the next chapter would pretty much just be smut with a little bit of aftermath at the end to segue into the next chapter. And then the 5th chapter would have Nicole and Jecka dealing with the aftermath of what happened between them while still trying to find more information about this drug. 

As for the choose your own adventure aspect of the story, I very much like the idea of it. Having the reader be able to make choices in a way similar to how things worked in the base game is a pretty cool idea. I don't really see a lot of choose your own adventure stories on AO3, so it would've been interesting to see how this story would execute that concept going forward. Unfortunately, the 3rd chapter is currently this fanfic's last one, so how the rest of the story goes, as well as what other choices the reader might have to make in the future, are pure speculation at this point.

But as for the chapters that are out, they're pretty good! I especially love how they end, as the first two chapters end with Nicole or Jecka starting a conversation by describing what happened to them in the bluntest way possible, and it's funny both times. 

And speaking of the humor in this story, I particularly love Nicole's rant in Chapter 3 when the Mantis drug seems to do nothing. It's not only pretty funny, but also makes sense considering what the Mantis drug put her through over the course of these 3 chapters. And the sudden shift to “let's take Percocet” before Nicole and Jecka hang out like normal is the cherry on top here. 

While we're on the subject of Nicole and Jecka's conversations, they're all pretty fun to read. The dialogue flows pretty well, and their interactions with each other feel in-character to how they’d talk in the games. I also love some of the out-of-pocket things that are said that would fit right into a Class of 09 game, like Nicole’s monologue about Ginger Ale, for example. In fact, all the character interactions in this story are done really well, really capturing the vibe you’d get from playing the Class of 09 games, and it makes all the dialogue very fun to read.

Overall, this story is pretty good so far. The first 3 chapters do a great job at setting up the mystery of what Mantis does, as well as setting the stage for some character development down the line if Nicole and Jecka’s conversation at the end of Chapter 3 is to be believed. I also like the narration a lot, as it’s told from Nicole’s perspective. Said narration does a great job at making you feel like you’re reading Nicole’s thought process as she gets into different situations and has to figure out what to do about them. I think my only nitpick with the story is that Nicole’s name is spelled “Nichole” throughout the entire story, but it is a pretty small nitpick that doesn’t affect my enjoyment at all. Here’s to hoping this story gets new chapters some day, as I am very curious to see how this mystery gets developed as the story goes on.

I remember being in this subreddit and seeing someone post fanart in parts. I think it started with Nicole taking over a lemonade stand from one of the characters from Charlie Brown, and then overcharging people for the lemonade. She then gets Jecka involved in this whole thing. I hope that's enough info to help you find this artist, as I really want to see what they're up to nowadays. Thanks in advance!
