Genuinely interested in how much leave other teachers are taking within a year. Looking at my Leave History from the past 12 Months on MyHR I have 13 leave entries totalling 95 hours/19 days.

35 hours/7days is unpaid leave for a holiday upcoming later this year (this technically is outside of a 12 month period but still including it as it is already approved and listed on MyHR)
25 hours/5 days is paid sick leave
15 hours/3 days are paid study leave days
10 hours/2 days are unpaid strike leave days
10 hours/2 days are paid reproductive leave days

How does this compare to you? I am genuinely just curious as to how much leaves others are utilising.

EDIT: Also interested in people’s current leave balances. I have the equivalent of 6 sick days accrued as of right now and no LSL.

Leaving Permanent Position in Queensland

I have a permanent teaching position in Queensland at a hard to staff school and I am interested in leaving my role/taking a break from my role and potentially working in another field.

I have some questions and would love to hear first hand from anyone who has done this! I am fairly set on my decision to step away at least temporarily or potentially permanently and want to do this in a way that is as seamless as possible.

My first action I am anticipating is for me to initially request to take 2027 as a year of leave without pay to focus study (have already started this study) and potentially engage in some relief work. I want to make this request very early to give a lot of notice and phrase it in this way as opposed to saying I am slowly dying and I hate my job - I want to keep it positive. Experiences with having this type of request approved? I understand it is at the principals discretion? Is it likely this would be accepted?

My concern with this option is that if I were to move into a department of education corporate role, I believe my principal would have to release me and approve the transfer - would I be better off just completely resigning and giving up my permanency? In the current teaching climate, permanency no longer feels valuable - if I wanted to come back to teaching I would absolutely be able to find a job, therefore I am not too concerned about giving away my permanency.

I am then considering what 2027 could hold for me. Genuine options I am considering are:

- Transitioning to a corporate Department of Education Role in the city - from my looking likely an A04 role initially. Would love to hear from anyone with direct experience with this scenario and how they found the job and what opportunities there are for promotion once you are in this type of role. Am I correct in saying you keep you accrued leave if you transition in his way as it is still within the education department?

- Transitioning to an administration type role within the Australian Public Service unrelated to education.

- Transitioning to some type of really stress free type of work for a time - working in a cafe for example.

- Transitioning to some type of NDIS support work.

- Transitioning to relief work, this would be my last choice as I want a break from schools.

I would choose one of these options for 2027 and reevaluate at the end as to whether I want to return to teaching or continue with a role I have established in 2027 or continue my study and work in that field (I may discontinue study if I find a role I can work in that I love in 2027).

I am really interested in anyone’s comments about the logistics of my above plan and personal experiences. I am also looking I think for some reassurance - I have worked in very hard to staff schools for 5 years now, I am very tired and burnt out. I know it is possible I may come back to schools in future but I just feel I need this break.
