“The 'Remarkable' Efforts to Shrink the Department of Education”

Dear Mr. Kent:
I wish to nominate you for prize idiot puppet of the year. In support this nomination:

“We have shrunk the federal Department of Education by almost 50% since the secretary came in,” Kent said, describing it as “remarkable.”

“And it would probably be even slightly higher than that if the federal courts had not intervened in some of our civil rights work. So we've shrunk the department by nearly 50% in terms of FTE or headcount,” he continued.

Kent noted that “services have still went on” regardless of the downsizing, saying that under the Biden administration, “double the staff weren't able to do core functions like getting out the FAFSA on time.”

Most student loan borrowers are over 35.

Millions are over 50. Millions are over 60. These borrowers, in many cases, have been indebted for decades.

Decades later, many still owe more than when they started.

This debt is a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Let’s make payments so high that older borrowers are doomed to fail. Let’s sign 65 year olds up to a 30 year payment plan.

Even if the Department of Education implements a die-at-your-desk policy, it won’t be enough.
