The initial suspect gets to basically bypass Jack and make a deal with judge skipping any kind of trial completely? I feel like this was another instance of the writers room wanting to move the story along at the expense of any kind of semblence of courtroom procedure...

I remember now why I stop my rewatch when that buffoon Thompson joins the cast: the writers room starts taking more and more liberties with the already fragile grasp on real procedures.
