Scotiabank call center are professional gaslighters?

I closed my account today because I found out that for the last 12 months Scotiabank have been charging me $16 a month “service fee”.

It’s been 2 and half years since I opened the account so even if I was told. I have completely forgotten. So I’m just unaware that you need $4000 in your account not to be charged.

I’ve been told less money in your account and more in savings is better. Except now I’ve actually lost more money from Scotiabank robbing me than I’ve made in my savings.

I called up to find out why I was being charged, and pretty much the response was “you knew! You signed the papers, did you read the terms and conditions?”.

First off, I clearly didn’t know, I’m not a banking nerd. I get paid, I pay my bills. That’s all I use my Bank for. Second, no one reads the terms and conditions. 3rd, what benefits do I even get for paying $16 a month?

I feel it’s real shady and unnecessary, like Scotiabank is making a lot of money, they don’t need me $16.

Then when I went to close my Account I was told it would cost money to transfer the money. Should we set up a gofundme for the Scotiabank CEO because I feel like he’s struggling here.

I’m just ranting, but I do believe it’s a little dirty what they are doing, because I bet many others have no real clue about banking and are just getting charged as they are unaware. But to be gaslit into this being my fault that I’m unaware as if I should be reading Scotiabank literature. And there is zero chance Scotiabank will refund that money because I willingly agreed that they are allowed to rob me.

Is this common across all Canadian banks, or is Scotiabank just extra greedy?

Screw Scotiabank, I hope the bank fails.

Edited: a man can’t have a little rant in peace, but I have taken on board, I have learnt a valuable lesson in banking responsibility. Also, I am an immigrant to Canada, so other than Australia, I’m not used to service fees.

Edited: any advice so I don’t lose out on ignorance again would be more helpful than just saying it’s my fault.
