If a requested license plate has regional indicators it'll default to the capital of the country if not requested otherwise.
If the country is issuing different plates for front and rear, the rear plate will be issued by default if not requested otherwise.

Plate numbers are sequential for each country, e.g. if the request is just "Switzerland" and the plate assigned is BE·67 that means it's a 67th Swiss plate on the subreddit. Plate numbers can also be requested by users but it must follow respective country's standards and formats for which plate the user wants.

Stickers, date and year indicators on the plates (that aren't part of the plate number) cannot be personalized, the date and year indicate when the plate flair was created and it cannot be changed.

Along with regular plates it is allowed to request older plate series and special plates of any country on planet Earth.

There are temporary plates in the "edit flair" section of the sub that can be assigned by users to themselves for available countries and they can use them until they learn about this post or if they want a temporary plate on purpose, more countries will be added over time. For countries that don't have a specific temporary plate series, whatever special plate series in that country that is used instead for temporary purposes will be available. Numbers on temporary plates will be updated at least once every 2 or 3 days, this means that it is possible to temporarily see two users with plates that have the same number. If users change the flairs themselves after the update there is a high chance the previous temporary plate will be reassigned in the next update, undoing the change, or the plate flair will be unassigned from the user. Users which haven't accumulated more than 0 karma in the subreddit will have their temporary plate flair unassigned at the update. Temporary plates will be unavailable while an update is pending.

Users with 0 karma which requested a flair and then haven't posted or commented in the following month will get their flair deleted.

It may take some time to make requested plates which are usually made at the same time when temporary plates are updated. It may take even few days, so be patient (the longest time someone had to wait was 12 days, but usually it's between 1 to 3 days).

As of Plate Flairs 2nd anniversary (23/6/2026) in total 843 plates were assigned.

All plates are remade, WRC cars don't use officially issued plates on them due to obvious reasons.

If the license plate of a country or state doesn't have a regional indicator for a city or subdivision where it was issued the distance is calculated from a capital city of that country or state or subdivision. Distances are calculated as a shortest driving route unless it is impossible to drive from the location from where the plate is from to the location where it was spotted or it's highly unlikely that the vehicle actually drove, instead the air distance is calculated.

The subreddit's database under Article 4 has two country lists, one for location where the plates can be spotted and one for location from where the plates are from. E.g. when it comes to plate spotting England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are all separated and have their own records, but for license plates that are issued in those countries all are considered to be from one country know as United Kingdom. This means that there are less countries which issue license plates than number of countries in which plates can be spotted. Each country has an ISO alpha-2/unicode (flag emoji) and alpha-3 code. For second country list all countries have VRI codes (including defacto VRI codes), records from all continents will be added to this country list eventually (for now there is only Europe).

It goes without saying but the word "country" doesn't refer only to sovereign states, there are various country types such as: quasi state, autonomous republic or region, overseas territory, Antarctic claim, etc.

The lists can be updated if there are any new or missed records for a country.

For a record to count the image of a license plate must be posted on this subreddit either as a self spot or internet spot. The post must have a name of the country from where the plate is from and a name of the country where the plate was spotted otherwise the post is invalid and not recognized by the Reddit's search system for this subreddit, due to this reason such posts also get removed. Putting abbreviation or misspelling a country name in the tittle also invalidates the post.

All records can be found by inputting names of countries that are on the list into the search system, e.g. searching for "Singapore Ecuador" or "Ecuador Singapore" and then sorting by new, top or hot will show the current world record (as of June 2026).

Since January 2026 Southern Transitional Council [YD|YMD] is considered a historical country and its record is 6599km for the greatest distance at which a foreign plate was spotted within that country.
