TARN, the Brogue-inspired traditional roguelike, updates once again!

TARN is a traditional roguelike game inspired by Brogue which expands on its ideas in many ways, including but not limited to:

  • A classic 26 depth quest into the dungeon!
  • An infinitely-generated world seperated by level boundaries and balanced by an accumulating regional difficulty mechanic.
  • A class system with affinity trees that unlock special talents. (Or you can play as the Deprived, which doesn't offer any!)
  • Environmental biomes, monsters, and items, half of which are from Brogue and half of which are entirely new!
  • Hints when hovering over monsters and item, like hit chance, damage, and other special effects.
  • Dynamic lighting and stealth.
  • Play with mouse, keyboard, or both!

About 3.5 months ago, I released the first public build of TARN with positive remarks. Since then, a lot of constructive feedback and bug reports have helped shape the game into a fun yet punishing experience -- this build in particular focuses a lot on game balance and enemy/ally AI. The main page links to a new Discord server and Ko-fi page if you want a dedicated community for discussion or supporting the game. It also has an updated gameplay manual included at the bottom of the page.

Welcome to TARN, a roguelike game inspired by Brogue, which expands on the ideas set in the latter in may ways, including but not limited to:

  • Even more dungeon levels beyond the North, West, South, and East borders of each dungeon level, traversable between multiple stairs connecting each depth
  • A class system with experience, leveling, and affinity trees (or you can play as the Deprived, which has none and provides the most similar experience to Brogue)
  • New environments, biomes, monsters, and items, even beyond the final floor
  • Decision-making! Do you explore more of the safer floors or succumb to the rising regional difficulty?
  • Hints when hovering over terrain or monsters, like chance to hit or number of hits to kill
  • Dynamic lighting and stealth
  • Play with mouse, keyboard, or both!

Recently I've shared the game with a small group of friends, but now that the game is ~95% complete and winnable, I think it's ready for the server to see. Please share feedback and your unfortunate demises!

Java is required to run the game, although later down the development line I may also release .exe builds that have Java bundled with them for convenience.

EDIT: 4/27/2026 -- new version
