Today is a "Setsubun 節分" or day before Risshuu立秋(りっしゅう)
So according to the old 24 season calendar (yep, it seems Japan really did have unique seasons!!) tomorrow sees the beginning of autumn.
Summer solstice around 6/21
On the calendar, it is the middle point of summer, even thogh it ’s also in the middle of the rainy season. After the summer solstice, the heat increases and it becomes a full-fledged summer.
(Shosho) around 7/7
ILittle by little the heat is gradually increasing, the end of the rainy season is near, and the heat is becoming more serious. The summer heat gets to be referred to as
(Daisho) Around 7/23
It imeans the hottest time, but the actual peak of the heat will be a little later. This is when people eat eels to gain strength to ward off the heat.
Risshu Around 8/7
This is when the heat is severe, but from this day on the calendar, it will be autumn, and after the beginning of autumn, Shochuu mimai will change to

The non-summer of '93
Anyone here remember the devastating events of 1993. I'm feeling a bit of dejavu with this year's weather.
A weak high-pressure system led to a prolonged rainy season (tsuyu) and unusually cool temperatures across Japan. The poor weather severely damaged the domestic rice harvest. This forced Japan to import rice from the United States and Thailand.
The summer also saw several destructive typhoons.
