The Big Dilemma: Leaving a very comfortable, high-end life in Pakistan for a middle-class restart in Australia?

Hey everyone,

I’m facing a major crossroads in my life and would love to get some perspective from people who have either made this move or decided against it.

I’m currently living in Pakistan, working as a Systems Engineer. Professionally, I’m doing incredibly well here. My income puts me in the absolute top tier of local earners, which means my lifestyle is highly comfortable—I can afford premium housing, domestic help, eating out wherever I want, and I’m largely insulated from the local inflation/economic crunch.

However, as we all know, money can’t buy you out of everything here. I’m still dealing with the daily mental tax of the political climate, law and order/street crime anxiety, and having to manage my own private backups (generators, UPS, multiple internet lines) just to stay online and do my job.

On the flip side, I have a clear pathway to migrate to Australia. If I move, I know exactly what I’m buying into: world-class public infrastructure, safety, predictable rule of law, and a stable future.

But the catch is the immediate financial reality. Starting out in Australia means hitting the reset button. I’d be moving from the top 1% lifestyle here to a standard, entry-to-mid level middle-class life there—high taxes, crazy housing costs, no domestic help, and a much tighter budget while I build my career back up in a new market.

So my question is: Is it worth giving up elite-level comfort and purchasing power in a volatile environment to become a regular middle-class earner in a stable, developed country?

For those who moved from a highly privileged position in Pakistan to the West, do you regret the lifestyle downgrade, or does the peace of mind make up for it? And for those who had the chance to leave but chose to stay with a high local income, how are you feeling about that choice now?

Would love to hear your honest thoughts and experiences. Thanks!
