Try posting anything that slightly goes against interest on another country's subreddit and you'll often see it removed or locked in seconds if it's likely to disrupt the community. Yet here, people are allowed to do whatever they want without any moderation.

I hope this doesn’t come across the wrong way, but this is something I’ve been feeling for a while and I wanted to see if others feel the same. Of course, you may disagree, and that’s completely fine. I just hope we can discuss it respectfully.
I love Senegal. It is my country, my blood, and where most of my life, family, and identity come from. But in the past few years, I have to be honest, I sometimes struggle to recognize what we are becoming as a country and as a society.
One of the biggest things for me is education. Senegal used to be deeply respected for its schools, universities, intellectual culture, and public debate. Dakar and Saint-Louis were places where people from many African countries came to study, learn, and build themselves. Today, unfortunately, I feel like that standard has dropped a lot!! A large part of the population is not receiving the level of education it deserves, and even among educated people, basic mastery of the official language and structured public debate often feel much weaker than before (look at the content of our national TVs...smh)
Another thing is religion. I am a very proud Muslim, and nothing will change that. But I have always believed that religion is deeply personal. We can all be believers and still live our faith with different levels of intensity, and that should be respected. What worries me today is that religion seems to be moving more and more from the personal space into politics, public pressure, and even how people expect others to behave socially or professionally. Through stories from my parents, I often pictured a Senegal that was still very religious, but also more open-minded and more balanced. So I honestly wonder if we are still truly a secular republic, or are we slowly acting like an unofficial religious state?
The last point is our character as a people. I know deep inside we are good people! But Senegal used to project calm, humility, restraint, strong diplomacy, and intellectual leadership in West Africa. That does not mean weakness!! It meant class to me tbh. Today, especially online, I feel like we are constantly beefing with people (I know they are also beefing with us but I will focus on my people for the sake of this post): Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Guinea, Mauritania, and others. I know social media has changed everything, but I don’t think that explains it all. I sincerely believe that the decline in education, civic culture, and moral standards affects the way people speak, argue, respect others, and handle disagreement.
Maybe I am being too nostalgic. Maybe I am only seeing the negative side. But I really feel like Senegal has lost some of the education, humility, and social elegance that made it respected.
I’d like to hear what others think, especially Senegalese people who have known Senegal for a long time. Do you feel this change too, or do you think I’m exaggerating?
