Milk Was a Bad Choice: The Implosion

Milk Was a Bad Choice: The Implosion

Opening:

I'm only going to spend a little time on the St. Louis match because frankly, I'm not sure there's much left to say about the performance.

The man-marking system isn't working right now, or, at minimum, it isn't working with the legs this team currently have to execute it.

Vieira struggled, and I'm starting to wonder whether that's been a larger trend since the return from the World Cup break. Too often, defensive coverage has felt secondary to pressing the attack, leaving the Quakes stretched and scrambling when that first line of pressure gets broken.

And that's starting to raise a bigger question for me: Is this a tactical problem that can be fixed, or are we starting to see the ceiling of this roster as other teams continue adding talent?

The Quakes are still in a playoff position. But I'm about one more bad week away from removing them from my list of legitimate Supporters' Shield contenders.

The milk, folks, is souring.

I Thought The Team Would Be Sold By Now

Days since the World Cup ended: 30

Still waiting. No announcement. No new owner. And instead, the club has apparently decided that what this particular moment needed was another storyline.

Because…

The Addition:

Enter Gavin Wilkinson.

ESPN reported it. The San Francisco Chronicle reported it. The Mercury News reported it.

And yet, at the time of writing, there hasn't been a corresponding announcement on MLS Soccer Dot Com or the Earthquakes' own website.

Bruce Arena also got noticeably feisty when questioned about the move.

Which leaves me with a pretty straightforward question: What exactly is the club's communication strategy here?

If the organization believes Wilkinson is the right person to consult on its soccer operations, then explain the decision.

Why him? What is his role? What input will he have? How long will he be involved?

And given the controversy attached to his previous tenure in Portland, how Kansas City removed him 8 days into the job because of fan backlash, how did the organization evaluate that history before bringing him in?

Silence doesn't make those questions disappear. It just makes the silence itself part of the story.

Looking Ahead: August 19 vs LA Galaxy

Somehow, after all of this, there's still a Cali Clásico to play. Because apparently MLS believes we haven't experienced enough emotional turbulence this week without worrying we may lose to LA.

The Final Whistle

This is where things become bigger than soccer results for me.

There have been rumors and speculation surrounding what could happen to the Quakes if the club is sold, including fears about the team's long-term future in San Jose.

As someone who watched the A's leave, I've already experienced what it feels like when the decisions of an organization fundamentally changes the relationship with a team.

None of that is the players' fault.

But fandom isn't unconditional support for every decision an organization makes. There can come a point where you have to ask whether the values you hold still align with the actions of the organization you're supporting.

That's why the Wilkinson decision and especially the lack of clear communication around it, bothers me.

If the Quakes believe this is the right move, own it. Explain it. Give supporters enough information to understand why the decision was made. Give us the opportunity to voice our thoughts as a united group by telling us. Because quietly allowing everyone else to report the news doesn't prevent scrutiny. It creates more of it.

And right now, after the performances on the field, uncertainty around the sale, and questions surrounding the direction of the club… I'm in a glass case of emotion.

Milk Was a Bad Choice: A Losing Streak

Opening:

A tie against the Galaxy isn't a win. So, for the sake of drama, we're officially calling it. The Quakes are winless since returning from the World Cup break after the 4-2 lose to Cincinnati.

Somewhere, there has to be a curse on this club. Because even during the "good" seasons, it always feels like the second half of the year becomes an endurance test instead of a preparation for the post season lap.

That might be why I feel like the vibes are off.

Bruce Arena said after the match there was "not enough leadership on the field in the second half."

And that's the part that stuck with me. Because the roster hasn't changed dramatically. So where did the leadership go?

Or... are we just in a glass case of emotion after a few frustrating results?

I Thought The Team Would Be Sold By Now

Days since the World Cup ended: 13

Still nothing. Not even a rumor. Not even a blurry photo of someone in a suit walking into PayPal Park.

The Big Picture:

The Quakes now sit 5th in the Supporters' Shield standings.

Ahead of them:

  • Nashville (with former Quakes talisman Cristian Espinoza)
  • Inter Miami (featuring some guy named Messi)
  • Vancouver (best team in Canada?)
  • LAFC

The climb is still possible. Bruce Arena has built a career on second-year Shield winning leaps.

Defensively, the Quakes have fallen to 7th in goals against, though they're still 4th in goal differential. So, the foundation hasn't collapsed. But you can hear a few cracks forming as the ground is shaky.

Under the Microscope:

A goal. An assist. And, maybe most importantly, some confidence to run at the opposition.

I'll admit it, I was probably too critical of them after that missed penalty.

You can see how their pace stretches defenses and creates opportunities that simply weren't there without them.

The only concern? Health. Because every time Timo Werner starts building rhythm, another interruption seems to follow. And nobody wants to watch another month of "working back to match fitness."

Structural Concerns:

Let's talk about Evander's goal. Because I don't think this was simply an individual mistake.

Right before that sequence, Bruce Arena substituted Ronaldo Vieira, replacing the defensive midfielder with Dave Romney in an effort that looked to protect the draw.

On paper? Understandable.

In practice? It opened exactly the space where Evander thrives.

Vieira normally occupies that pocket in front of the back line. Once they left, Leroux and Harkes appeared unsure who should step into that responsibility.

Evander didn't hesitate. He found the space. He did what Evander has done throughout his MLS career. He took the shot.

That's why this one feels more tactical than individual. If one of the league's best players who has been known for some of their shots from distance is on the field, the maybe that's the player you don't leave unattended by taking out the player who protects that space in front of the backline.

Fault Line Feature: Preston Judd

Preston had the chance to put the match away. And I think that's encouraging.

Unfortunately, the timing of that whole moment to put the Quakes up 3-1 turned it from opportunity to disaster.

After the World Cup break, and after serving a suspension, it makes sense that the rhythm isn't quite back yet. But if Preston keeps finding those positions the goals will come because we saw how they were pushing for the golden boot once things were clicking.

Looking Ahead: August 15 vs St. Louis City SC

The Final Whistle

The Quakes don't need to reinvent themselves. They need to remember who they were when they were the team winning.

The team that pressed with confidence, defended together, and looked like Supporter Shield contenders didn't disappear overnight.

Right now, for whatever reason, they're searching for that identity again.

The good news? The season isn't lost.

The bad news? MLS doesn't wait for a team to figure it out.

That Escalated Quickly: Post World Cup Break

Opening:

Well.

That was certainly a return to MLS action.

First, complete shithousery at PayPal Park against Orlando City and it was the debut of our new starting goalkeeper.

Ugh.

Then we followed it up with a draw in the Cali Clásico where we had a last-minute chance to add to the lore of Stanford Stadium wins before ultimately settling for a point with a PK save by our previous starting keeper.

Ugh Ugh.

I'd also like to introduce a new recurring segment.

I Thought The Team Was Supposed To Be Sold After The World Cup

Days since it ended: 8

Still waiting. And at this point I'm beginning to think the sources of a sale may have been from Brick Tamland.

The Big Picture:

Before the break, it felt easy to point toward a key moment whenever goals were conceded.

Now? Not so much.

The defensive issues were showing before the break while Daniel was still in goal, and they've continued with Angus Gunn.

Which tells me this isn't a goalkeeper problem. It's a structural one.

Watching the Quakes defend these last two matches gave me flashbacks to the Almeyda era. One-v-one. Huge spaces. Attackers running directly at the back line.

The kind of defending that makes you instinctively reach for the blood pressure medication before the counterattack even develops.

So, what happened? Because the defense that carried this team through the first half of the season suddenly looks like it forgot how to stop the opposition.

What Worked:

Credit where credit is due for Bouda.

Whether deployed on the wing or filling in for Preston at striker. Bouda tried to carry the attack on their shoulders.

The movement was intelligent. The work rate was high for as long as they could manage with the limited rotation.

They looked comfortable regardless of where Bruce Arena asked them to play.

That's an incredibly valuable player to have with injuries and yellow card accumulation continuing to shuffle the lineup.

Structural Concerns:

The biggest question remains the same. Is the club planning to bring in the attacking midfielder we've all been talking about?

Or is the plan simply... Wait until Niko comes back.

Because those are two very different strategies.

Werner continues to look motivated. The effort is obvious on the attack. But without someone consistently breaking lines through the middle, or able to see the pass before the run, defenders are free to double-team the wings and make life much more difficult.

We also see him venture out to different parts of the field to try and make an impact which leaves others working to fill that space. Is that working?

And then there's Angus Gunn.

The jury is still out. One week isn't enough. Two weeks probably isn't either. But by the end of the season, who will Angus Gunn be for this club? That's suddenly one of the biggest storylines left since…

Player Who Was Kind of a Big Deal…while with us: Daniel De Sousa Britto

Funny enough, the player who stood out this week didn't play.

Daniel may end up being missed far more than the organization may think.

Short term? Absolutely with the way things are going.

Long term? That depends on whether these defensive struggles continue.

Because if the structure in front of Angus Gunn doesn't improve, we'll quickly realize Daniel wasn't merely making spectacular saves, they were erasing defensive mistakes before they became headlines.

So, I'd like to give Daniel their flowers one last time.

I genuinely believe they were on pace to be part of the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year conversation with us.

I hope they thrive in Dallas. I hope they earn the long-term contract they deserve. And I hope Quakes fans remember just how many points they quietly rescued over the last couple seasons. I also hope they hit whatever metrics so the Quakes get the full payout.

Thank you Daniel.
