Double down on one business or grow two smaller businesses in the same space?

Ive been in the automotive space since i left school at 16, I'm now 29 and have been self employed for the last 8 years. The last year has been tough on me both mentally and financially trying to grow from being a one man operation to nearly and team of 5 or 6 back down to just me and one other as of recent.

I started as a HGV mechanic but after a few injuries and near misses i decided to venture into auto electrical installations such as dash camera's trackers etc...

So far this has proven to be less profitable than the repairs and have thought about going back to automotive repair alongside the installations.

However i just don't whether that will work in the long term, as not only am i trying to grow the installation side i will also be trying to grow the repair side? Essentially growing two small businesses from nothing. Or should i just focus on one?

Dedicated Hybrid and EV Workshop

Hi,

I’m looking at starting a dedicated hybrid and ev workshop in the uk. Has anyone done something similar? Is the market big enough to keep a 1-2 bay workshop busy full time. Thinking about stocking EV specialist tyres also as most tyre shops seem to order them in. Which can cause delays. Also having a fast charger to offer a free recharge service up to a certain percentage with every repair or service etc….

Anyone else just done with Business?

I’ve have been self-employed for 7/8 years. As a one man band I was doing okay, However after sustaining a few injuries whilst at work it quickly reminded me that if I stop so does the business.

So last year I decided to try and grow from a one man band operation and quickly went up to 6/7 employees however fast forward 12 months I’m now back down to 2 and feel absolutely broken and disconnected.

Anyone else been in this situation? I’m really struggling to see the point in continuing and the business has lost money consistently for the past 6 months…..
