Fuel leak help
When I first bought my 2004 E46 M3 with 150K miles, the first time I filled it up I could smell fuel inside the car. I asked the previous owner and he said "oh yea, I only fill it up half way to 3/4" to avoid that. Okay, well - I'd like to not have that on a full tank. So I replaced the fuel pump and sender seals which honestly weren't really that bad. After that, with a full tank I didn't smell fuel inside the car anymore, but I could smell it outside, but no leaking or dripping that I could tell. I didn't think too much of it, figured I'd get to it at some point. Today I fill up on the way to work, and I make a stop on my way home and the parking spot is on pretty uneven ground - the rear driver side is the lowest part of the car. When I come back out to the car, I've got a HUGE puddle of fuel under the car and it's just spewing out fast enough for me to be pissed at the amount with gas at 4 bucks a gallon. It was coming out right near or somewhat behind the rear passenger wheel.
The previous owner had the rear subframe supports welded in, which if I understand require the fuel tank to come out? Or if there's just a leaky hose somewhere, or maybe this is a common failure? Anybody have any insight on things I can check without having to drop the entire fuel tank to find out where it's coming from?
