I'm Dr. Ben Veenstra, a Mayo Clinic bariatric surgeon - AMA about bariatric surgery and all things bariatrics! (Friday, August 14 at 12pm ET)

Hi, Reddit! I'm Dr. Ben Veenstra, a bariatric surgeon at the Mayo Clinic Bariatric Center in Jacksonville, Florida, and I'm excited to join you for an AMA on Friday, August 14, at 12pm ET.

My colleagues and I care for about 1,800 bariatric patients at Mayo Clinic Florida each year, helping individuals navigate a range of weight-loss treatments. In addition to medical weight management and primary bariatric procedures, we also specialize in revision bariatric surgery and caring for individuals with complex medical conditions – including advanced heart, kidney, and liver disease – who may have been told they have few or no treatment options.

I'm here to answer general questions about bariatric surgery, weight management, and obesity care. We know these can be deeply personal topics, and it isn't always easy to know where to start. Like many bariatric surgeons, I chose this field because I've seen the meaningful difference these treatments can make for people when they're the right fit.

No question is too basic, I can almost guarantee I've heard it before. Whether you're just starting to explore your options, considering surgery, supporting a loved one, or simply curious about the field, I'm happy to answer your questions.

While I can't provide personalized medical advice, I'm happy to discuss the evidence behind different treatment options, who may be a candidate for bariatric surgery, why these procedures remain an effective option for many people, what recovery is typically like, questions you may want to ask your own care team, and anything else that comes to mind.

Feel free to drop your questions here ahead of time, I'll be checking back on Friday, August 14 at 12pm ET and answering as many as I can. Looking forward to your questions, please go ahead and ask away!
