Does anyone else actually like a bit of toxicity in romance?

I'm talking about possessiveness, jealousy, obsession, and codependency.

The only caveat is that this only works for me if it’s a completely mutual dynamic. The characters are equally possessive, obsessive, and willing to burn down the world for each other.

My favorite version is when one of them is seemingly sweet while the other is more openly intense and unhinged, but the sweet one is just as obsessed. I’m also okay if both characters are completely insane for each other from the beginning! They feed off of and into each other. If one person is making the other person miserable, I'm out.

Having said that, if there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s a one-sided dynamic (almost all of romances from this year).

However, when they're both equally toxic for each other? I eat up (in fiction). The dynamic isn’t exclusive to more dramatic shows, I think it can even show up in dosages in more fluffy shows.

Honestly, I feel like BLs and vertical dramas lean into this dynamic more often than long-form dramas, though there are definitely some hetero long-form dramas that do it well too.

🍉 Tea & Melons: Continued Drama with Guo Yuxin

https://www.koreaboo.com/asia/top-actress-caught-shading-fellow-actress-in-alleged-leaked-voice-recording/

Back in December, Zhou Ye wore a grey dress. Guo Yuxin wore a similar dress in January, and the topic trended, with some people accusing Guo Yuxin of copying Zhou Ye.

Now, an alleged leaked audio recording has surfaced in which Guo Yuxin is supposedly heard saying, "Who's really using who for clout?" Allegedly, she claimed the dress didn't gain attention until she wore it in January, potentially implying the other opposite party used her for clout.

Of course, all of this is alleged. We don't know if the recording is real or, even if it is, whether she was actually referring to Zhou Ye.

What's interesting is that a lot of people are questioning the premise itself. Zhou Ye is the much bigger star, so they're asking why she'd even need to care if a lesser-known actress wore a similar dress. Some are even calling the whole idea delusional. For context, Zhou Ye has starred in multiple long form dramas like Legend of the Female General and Love Me Love My Voice.

Guo Yuxin is also currently caught up in other controversies involving Liu Xiao Xu and her agency, which has fueled even more discussion.

What do you all think? Again, this is all alleged. The entertainment industry is quite murky.

Does anyone else miss the intimacy of older short dramas?

I have noticed that dramas from just last year seemed much more comfortable letting the leads actually feel like a couple. The chemistry had room to breathe, the tension built naturally, and when characters fell in love, it felt believable.

Lately, though, it feels like the genre is getting increasingly sanitized. As short dramas have exploded in popularity and visibility, it seems like producers and directors are navigating tighter content restrictions and censorship standards. The result is that a lot of romances feel restrained. Some scenes are definitely edited out and it feels odd and unnatural to watch.

One of the things that always set short dramas apart from traditional long-form dramas was that they weren't afraid to lean into the intimacy in romance. Whether the intimacy was objectively better is up for debate, but it was certainly more plentiful, and it sometimes helped the relationships feel more real and convincing. That was part of the appeal.
I'd hate to see that disappear. If short dramas end up stripping away one of thins that that made them feel distinct, what's left to separate them from long-form dramas? Does anyone else miss the intimacy of older dramas? Curious if anyone else has noticed this trend, or if I'm just nostalgic for last year's dramas already.

💭 My Thoughts

Let me first start by saying...is this story sugar, spice, and everything nice? YES. Is this story sweet enough to give you cavities? Also, YES! Is this story cringe at times? Also, also, YES! Put it altogether and you have a very entertaining and sweet drama! That said, let's get into the story...

📖 The Story

  • I’m going to be honest - I had to rewind a couple times just to track the plot. The first scene is literally the FL dreaming about making out with the ML, so we’re full steam ahead.
  • The premise is childhood sweethearts turned arranged-marriage situation, with separation thrown in for drama but still very much an “inevitable couple” setup. They’ve known each other forever, their families are basically intertwined, and I actually liked that they start off on equal footing, just mutual like from the beginning.
  • The ML gets sent off for “heir training” by his father, which apparently involves intense workouts and target practice. I’m still not convinced he earned anything about business, but sure.
  • The FL thinks he abandoned her, but it’s really his father forcing him to leave. The only angst really comes in when the ML learns the FL was kidnapped on the day he left, and he feels a lot of guilt towards her, but she reassures him. Again, VERY, VERY MINOR ANGST, and this is closer to the end.
  • She transfers to his school and he immediately goes into full pursuit mode. Let me tell you…the FL folds like a house of cards. No real resistance or hesitation. I get it though. He’s rich, good-looking, obsessed with her, and treats her like she’s the center of the universe. We would all fold.
  • The ML kisses her anytime, anywhere, and the FL isn't resisting. Hallelujah! What actually works really well is how the ML and FL portray lust and love especially the ML. You could see him fighting for self-control and losing that self-control at times.
  • He does everything to keep her close: tricks her into calling him “gege,” showers her with gifts, finds every excuse to be with her, and is just aggressively in love and in lust at all times.
  • The FL? Just as gone. If you’ve read my posts, you know I love an invested FL, and she delivers. She worries about him, goes to confess first, and even tries to propose first before they accidentally sync up and do it together. My girl is a smitten kitten.
  • Overall, this is a low-stress, high-sugar, high-steam watch. If there’s a main activity, it’s kissing. If there’s a location, it’s wherever they happen to be standing while kissing. Not entirely sure how they’re getting away with this at school, but anyway…
  • Bonus: two side couples also get screen time, and yes, they’re cute too. And yes again, they also kiss. Nobody is safe.

👥 Favorite Moment

  • When the leads confess, but I'm going to post a steamy gif anyways. Enjoy! My girl was holding on for dear life...

✅ The Verdict

Please watch if you want something light, fun, and steamy! This drama briefly flirts with drama and then remembers it would rather have them making out.

Spice 🔥🔥🔥🔥- They spend a lot of time making out with each other.

Sweet 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹- My man was in tears when she confessed.

Drama Name: Time and Him Are Just Right (Second couple)

I was on a YouTube rabbit hole and stumbled upon this drama. I didn't watch the whole drama, but the moment that stuck with me wasn’t the plot - it was the SML saying, “Do you know it’s exhausting always being the one to make the first move? I’m tired.” Then, actually following through with: “I don’t like you anymore. Let’s break up.”

My immediate reaction? Finally.

Not because I’m invested in this specific couple, but because this is the first time I’ve seen a ML actually react the way a real person would after carrying a relationship on his back. He’s not endlessly patient. He’s not absorbing neglect like it’s a personality trait. He just…hits his limit.

It made me realize: this is probably how so many of these so-called “green flag” MLs would feel if they were written with even an ounce of self-respect.

Let’s be honest - a lot of them are out here doing everything. Initiating, reassuring, waiting, forgiving, rearranging their entire lives around the FL…while she gives him almost nothing. This is exactly what I mean when I talk about imbalance being framed as romance.

What makes this scene hit is that it breaks that expectation. The ML isn’t a bottomless well of patience. He gets tired. He notices the lack of effort, constant arguing, constant waiting for him to make the first move, and instead of waiting for the plot to reward him, he removes himself. Let's be real - this is what would actually happen in real life.

No one - man or woman - is sticking around forever to be an afterthought. If you’re always the one reaching out, always the one caring more, always the one trying…eventually you stop. That’s not a failure of devotion. That’s called having standards.

In dramaland? MLs are expected to endure. Indefinitely. No matter how little they get back. That’s what gets labeled a “green flag,” when half the time it just highlights how one-sided the relationship is.

Like I’ve said before, I’d feel the exact same way if it was reversed - if a FL was doing everything while the ML coasted. The difference is…we never see that.

Which is why this scene stood out so much. Turns out, if you let MLs act like real people, they get tired too.
