[Astral Lion] The Paladin of the Astral Lion

[Astral Lion] The Paladin of the Astral Lion

Personnel Dossier — Sir Anson Pyke

Grand Admiral Sir Anson Pyke is the most popular of his peers, admired for both his striking presence and charismatic demeanour. His close partnership with the Office of Public Affairs rests not only on charm but on genuine military accomplishment as a war hero. A graduate of the Royal Naval Academy on his homeworld of Penvro, he followed in the tradition of many distinguished officers from the Redoubt.

Pyke’s ascent accelerated during the Velutarian War, where he proved himself a gifted fleet coordinator. In just 10 T‑years he rose from High Commodore to Admiral. As his command expanded, he began refining micro‑level fleet formations. This meticulous experimentation produced the Pykeman Formation, in which battlecruisers and heavier ships arrange into cascading columns to synchronise precise volley fire, thus allowing Casarian guns to punch through the superior Velutarian shields. The formation became pivotal in defending the Astral Lion Constellation, earning Pyke the Monarch’s Laurel and the title of Paladin of the Astral Lion.

His innovations not only strengthened fleet cohesion but also prevented a devastating collapse in morale. The Pykeman Formation is now standard across the Royal Star Navy, and Pyke continues to experiment with larger, more complex arrangements, seeking optimal force compositions for the galactic wars yet to come.

[Astral Lion] The Old Juggernaut

Personnel Dossier — Sir Jean-Charles Cordonnier

Grand Admiral Sir Jean‑Charles Cordonnier, a Nourenchman from Orphelin in the Redoubt Oversector, is one of the Royal Star Navy’s most influential commanders. Descended from generations of naval officers, he broke tradition by commissioning as an engineering officer, an unconventional path for his family that shaped his legacy.

Already a highly decorated commander before the Velutarian War, Cordonnier entered the conflict as one of its youngest High Admirals. This stature enabled the creation of the Pillars of Mankind, colossal 70‑km warships built as humanity’s failsafe should the Starborne Realm fall. Though he saw limited combat during the conflict, the deployment of the HMS Pillar of Mankind proved decisive in the final Casarian offensives.

His unwavering commitment to these leviathans earned him the moniker Old Juggernaut. Once controversial, his vision was later vindicated as the vessels became mobile forward‑operating fortresses capable of sustaining entire armadas behind enemy lines. Cordonnier further silenced critics during the recent Vengaeran Incursion, personally leading the defence and liberation of Cornucopia, demonstrating to allies and foes that—even in old age—he remains a tactical force worthy of his name.

[Astral Lion] The Fighting Legate

Personnel Dossier — Sir Alistair Sinclair

Sir Alistair Desmond Sinclair descends from a long line of royal marines, though he chose a different destiny when he joined the Diplomatic Corps after the galaxy’s disclosure. His mix of discipline, charm, and stubborn idealism led to his appointment as the first Casarian ambassador to the Ryphian Star Commonwealth. In this landmark role, he set the golden standard for the first generation of Legates, earning admiration from both nations as well as the nickname the Fighting Legate after a notorious clash with the Ryphian press.

Sinclair’s tenure helped lay the foundation for stable relations between the two Terran powers, smoothing early tensions and developing key diplomatic and economic ties. Widely respected for his sincerity, he remains known as a devoted father and loyal friend, extending trust across cultural and species lines. His family legacy endures through Sinushan, the luxury carpentry venture founded jointly by his father and the father of his former assistant.

Today, Sir Alistair serves as the High Legate of the Meridian Exclave in the Tyvreki Reach including the famous Bactria Station, the galaxy’s newest diplomatic hub. As both representative and military governor, he oversees the Exclave with the same blend of firmness, wit, and resilience that first carried him onto the interstellar stage.

Author's Note

Legates of the Casarian Star Kingdom hold a unique role in Casarian society. They're a blend of a traditional ambassador, but stem historically from military ranks. In the militarised Casarian society, the Astral High King holds considerable power over foreign affairs. Since the MacKinnon Reformations, the Ministry of Interstellar Affairs has integrated with offices of Royal Armed Forces, linking Casarian foreign interests with military doctrine. Thus, the ranks of Legates were expanded beyond the scope of military governer into the role of ambassadors in an ever-converging galaxy.

In the far distant future, Mankind has settled across the neighbour of its ancestral galaxy. Like scattered embers, they reignited again after the destruction of the Andromeda Gate. Their fate, as well as those of the other species from the Milky Way Galaxy, varies. Some have found collaboration with natives while others faced numerous tensions. When the Casarian Star Kingdom invited all known star nations to the Meridian Conventions on Bactria Cincture, the starfaring civilisation started not only to standardise astropolitical relations, but also to map out the galaxy. These are the compiled top-on view maps of the Andromeda Galaxy as of 0 ABT.

Astrographic Layout

The Andromeda Galaxy's structure is one marred by gravitational interactions with satellite galaxies. This has resulted in an irregular structure characterised by its discontinuous spiral arms, vast sparse gaps, and a dominant ring structure. Yawns, maws, fissures and breaches separate the arms of the galaxy into disjointed segments. Though these don't necessarily dictate travel routes between stars, denser regions are economically more interesting to develop into. Their proximities not only shorten distance, but also ease the logistics of a starfaring civilisation. Thus, star nations grow following these patterns, and the most dominant civilisations are based in the Alcaeus Ring. In the case of the Polvanite Nexus, it may even lead to points of contention.

Notably, the shown naming convention of Andromeda's structure is based on Terran mythology and, thus, not universally accepted by its inhabitants.

Astrographic Regions

The inhabitants of the Andromeda Galaxy have arrived to a general nomenclature for different regions within the galaxy. While names may differ per culture, the star nations have largely agreed on the depicted "neutral" terms for astrographic phenomena.

Beyond the primeval Drakhuri Celestial Imperium lies the Drakhurian Rim, a boundary explored for millennia by the venerable Drakhuri. Yet not even their Custodial Emperor's warhammer has affirmed its dominion over it. Though friendly star nations border the Imperium, the Rim is infested with untamed voids filled with nomadic civilisations. Even the Tebadin have carved out a place for their roaming fleets to replenish their strengths. Some have loyal satrapies, though legends persist of barbaric hordes raiding indiscriminately.

The Wild Rim is not unlike the Drakhurian Rim. Its vices exalt its reputation as the most hostile region of the galaxy. Numerous nomadic civilisations sprawl there: Elorians, Zelorian pirates, rogue Krol raiders, and even the infamous Tebadin, who preserve their nomadic origins in its farthest edges. Though benevolent civilisations exist in it as well, they are constantly at odds with those seeking to establish their dominion. The Qell'Nudar Reapers are perhaps its fiercest inhabitants, purging whatever enslaved species fails to benefit them. Yet from the Astral Lion's Lair, ascends one civilisation set to bring order to the region and tame its ferocity. An order shaped in the image of Mankind's harsh struggle for survival across the unforgiving void.

The Ghoul Periphery is perhaps the galaxy's most avoided region of space. Traversing the Zelvan Dominion in itself proves dangerous as they enslave non-Zelvans liberally, and tales of terrors only sow dread into the hearts of daring explorers. Star wraiths and their undead servants roam the periphery. Few survive their encounters with them and fewer still maintain their sanity. It is for those reasons, that the Ghoul Periphery is best avoided.

Meanwhile the Tyvreki Reach bustles with life of all forms. The nesting grounds of the Tyvreki space whales are filled with interstellar dust and young civilisations. Some seek enlightenment, others understanding or conquest, but what remains neigh uncontested is the region's reputation as the galaxy's most diverse. A testament to it is the symbiotic lifestyle of the plantoid Caloctorans, who have sprouted blossoming realms harbouring the Tyvreki on their migratory routes. They are but one of the few miracles present in the Tyvreki Reach and the rim beyond.

The largest region of unexplored space is the Trans-Ryphian Verge. Beyond the colossal Star Commonwealth lie mysteries and new civilisations to be faced. While the Alcaeus Ring is inhabited by non-native species, the sparser segments of this galactic verge are largely forsaken. Although those yearning venture for adventure, opportunity or refuge venture into it, the Ryphians consider it nothing more than a galactic backwater. However, their ignorance rooted in pompousness has given them a sinless illusion, one that distant whispers from the verge might shatter.

Astropolitical Map

Borders have different meanings to the various denizens of the Andromeda Galaxy. Some see them as absolute while others see them as gradients of cultural influence, hence why the map consolidates these visions into one. It denotes the area of the galaxy of which the designated known star nation nominally controls over 95% of its stars. Additionally, star nations inside the sphere of influence of another's—formally or informally—are depicted in the same colour.

Mankind is scattered in nearly every corner of the Andromeda Galaxy. From joining the ranks of the Union of Consolidated Stars, the Zelvan Dominion, United Interstellar Communes, Kirillian Polities and the Drakhuri Celestial Imperium, to founding its own states such as the Owettan Principalities, Ryphian Star Commonwealth and the Casarian Star Kingdom, humanity flourishes once more across distant stars. However, with the emergence of the Casarian Star Kingdom, a growing movement of pan-Terranism aims to reforge the bonds of kinship.

Author's Note

The maps are based on ESA's Gaia and Caltech's Spitzer infrared pictures of the Andromeda Galaxy. These helped me map out the structure of the Andromeda Galaxy in accordance to star density. For those wondering, the maps were made with projections of the aforementioned pictures in paint.net and deliberately downsized for this post. A reference point is NGC 206, the brightest star forming region of Andromeda, which has been denoted the Astral Lion's Lair.

Also, I apologise to colour-blind readers for lacks in clarity on the astropolitical map. It's my first finished version of the map and I'll try to look for ways to better represent astropolitical alliances in future.

Personnel Dossier — Sir Cherian Mathai Kulangara and Sir Wulfhart von Müllermark

High Admirals Sir Cherian Mathai Kulangara and Sir Wulfhart von Müllermark are perhaps the Casarian Star Kingdom's most inseparable command pairing, with their names rarely spoken apart. Sir Wulfhart, heir to the Stargraviate of Adlerkette, grew up amongst alpine valleys and the noble estates of Almband in the Palisas Augen system. Born into a Leontine Catholic house with centuries of service behind it, he was characterised by an unequivocal duty to his people. Meanwhile, Cherian Mathai Kulangara’s origins lay far from the Coreward worlds, on the lush moon of Chuttumani in the Trailing Oversector. Though not born into nobility, he was an Honour Scion, eligible for direct ascension through merit due to his great‑great‑grandfather’s distinctions in the Marcavani War. The Kulangaras, adherents of the Saint Thomas Christian tradition, are renowned for their frontier‑hardened perspectives, a stark contrast to the aristocratic legacy of House von Müllermark. Despite social and ethnic divides, both men answered the Lion's Call and enlisted in the Royal Star Navy, where shared service would forge a bond later hailed across the Starborne Realm.

During the Velutarian War, both men were mentored directly by High Admiral Coriton and proved early, adept students of his emerging trochilic doctrine. What set them apart was their blending of established Neoclassical and Trochilic Schools, concocting a deadly mix of wall-based discipline and unpredictable rotational puncturing. Against the Velutarian onslaught, this hybrid approach proved devastating in counter-offensives conducted under High Admiral Coriton. They refined it to lethal perfection during the later Ralkathi Campaign, where they annihilated vast swaths of Dominion forces. It was during operations in the Velutarian War that their martial bond truly formed. Frequently altering battle roles, the pair learned directly from one another as their professional trust deepened into an enduring friendship that hardened their resolve. So strong was this bond that when von Müllermark was raised as a Peer of the Astral Lion by High Admiral Coriton, he, in turn, raised Kulangara as his equal, binding them in a relationship closer than blood.

It was this unity that earned them their shared epithet: the Sabreteeth of the Astral Lion. While individually formidable, together they are feared for their coordination so entrenched that they know each other's intuition. In Casarian memory, they stand as exemplars of paired command—one born of Coreward nobility, the other of the frontier—whose fusion of tradition, innovation, and mutual trust defined some of the most effective fleet actions of the modern age.
