[Astral Lion] Military songs of the Star Kingdom — Even a galaxy away, traditions are sung beneath the stars

[Astral Lion] Military songs of the Star Kingdom — Even a galaxy away, traditions are sung beneath the stars

Here's an interesting bit of lore I have from behind the scenes for the Casarian Star Kingdom: military songs! Since the Casarians are descendants of Earth, they've inherited military songs as well (like how Heart of Oak in Commonwealth navies or, perhaps less preferably, Erika sung by the South African Defence Force during Apartheid). The Casarians were cut off from Earth while using an intergalactic gate to Andromeda and have been isolated since. This has made them incredibly attached to their ancestral traditions from various ethnicities that continue to thrive in the Star Kingdom.

Now, these songs aren't always one-to-one, since Casarian lyrics have adopted 5 or 7 syllable structures to represent humanity (five fingers) and the Seven Pillars of Mankind (cross-ethnic cultural values). English (evolved into Standard Anglese) is the national language and lingua franca. It is also the language used by the federal forces and, thus, lyrics of songs are always in this language. Down below you find a selection of songs used by the federal military.

If you have any thought or inspirations for the various military branches or state militaries, feel free to comment down below!

Boldly Marching

This is the first military marching song of the Casarians, predating even the Star Kingdom. It was popularised by the wartime leader Constantin Sinea (the future King) during the Promethean War and became a sort of proto-Casarian anthem. It is in many ways an anglicised version of Drum Bun, a Romanian Army march, although it has Casarian-coated references like the Lion's Banner.

Lyrics

Boldly marching, drummers beating, that’s a soldier’s call, hooray!
Step after step, never ceding, officers withal, hooray!
Be it sunny, be it snowy, we keep marching on. )
Be it rainy, be it blowy, we go proudly on. )x2

Boldly marching, drummers beating, that’s a soldier’s call, hooray!
Step after step, never ceding, officers withal, hooray!
While parading, or at war, we all march as one. )
Be it grating, hear us roar, ‘til the war is won. )x2

Boldly marching, drummers beating, that’s a soldier’s call, hooray!
Step after step, never ceding, officers withal, hooray!
May the bloodstained banner reign, ‘til the end of days. )
Let its glory never wane, for all to appraise. )x2

Note: Post-Promethean War last stanza:
May our Lion’s Banner reign, ‘til the end of days. )
Let its glory never wane, for all to appraise. )x2

The Lion roars forevermore!

The next song is what I could possibly envision as the anthem of the Royal Grand Army. I want it to be bombastic and for that the concept heavily leans into it. It's based of the North Korean Defend the Headquarters of the Revolution song. I'm not sure if I'll make this canon, but it certainly is similar in style and spirit as a rallying cry for the Casarians after having overcome the Promethean War.

The Sabred Lion is exactly what it is, a maned sabred tiger native to the capital world of the Star Kingdom. It serves as the national animal and symbol of human tenacity, however, it must not be confused with the Astral Lion which is a more metaphorical manifestation of Casarian identity. Additionally, the Casarians perceive the darkness between stars as the symbolic embodiment of evil, colloquiallu called the Dark Void or Void.

Lyrics

Ah-aaah-ah-aaah! Hear the Sabred Lion roar!
Unbroken by the Void’s threats, the Lion roars forevermore!

On a vacant paradise, our forebears landed!
Building a lasting morrow, never seen before!
Once they took up arms, the radges were quelled!
Unbroken by the Void’s threats, the Lion roars forevermore!

Our ancestors rose anew, worthy of the name!
Vowing our ancestral oath, Mankind at its core!
And to you, oh Proud Lion, may you ever reign!
Unbroken by the Void’s threats, the Lion roars forevermore!

Aaah-ah-aaah! Aaah-ah-aah!
The Lion roars forevermore!
The Lion roars forevermore!

Casarians everywhere, claim your destiny,
And in your glistening hearts, carry Terra’s ore!
Answering the Lion’s call, you’ll quash savagery!
Unbroken by the Void’s threats, the Lion roars forevermore!

Ah-aah-ah-aah!
The Lion roars forevermore!
Unbroken by the Void’s threats, the Lion roars forevermore!

Hear us Roar across the Stars! — National Anthem

For the Casarian anthem, I don't have a musical piece yet since it'll likely be something unique. However, the lyrics are already written and follow the structure of a poem reflecting on the Seven Pillars of Mankind in each stanza.

Lyrics

Can’t thou hear the Lion’s roar,
Echoing through time,
Roared in the struggles of yore,
Atop the harsh climb?
Oh, Thy roars once more!

(Chorus)
Hear us roar across the stars,
For we march as one!
A legacy told through scars,
Unbroken by none!
Brighter than the Sun!

Born out of Terra’s lost ore,
On a maiden world,
Guided by ancestral lore,
A blest oath we hurled!
To heaven we soar!

(Chorus)

Forged by Promethean fires,
No matter the spars,
We erect protean spires,
Piercing to the stars!
Witness gleaming pyres!

(Chorus)

United by our kinship, No matter the tongue,
Let us enjoy a sweet sip,
Like when we were young!
‘Til Death slacks our grip!

(Chorus)

With the Lion awoken,
We herald order,
Lo, the Steel Crown unbroken,
From core to border!
A vow unspoken!

(Chorus)

The stars glitter through our Realm,
Our astral Kingdom,
With liberty at the helm,
Our cherished freedom!
Darkness we will whelm!

(Chorus)

Serving the Realm we adore,
‘Til the last star’s gone,
We recall the oath we swore!
Oh, Sabred Lion,
Roar forevermore!

(Chorus)

I vow to Thee, Lion Stars

Next up is a national hymn similar to I vow to Thee, my Country, which is its direct inspiration. However, unlike its English inspiration, it is dedicated to a star constellation of cultural significance: the Astral Lion. This is an important symbol that inspired the early Casarian colonists during the Promethean War.

It's comparable to the Pole Star or the Southern Cross, but it's more deeply tied to the cultural identity as a star-crossing empire. The international alliance of the Casarians has adopted an adjusted version of this song as its anthem.

Lyrics

I vow to Thee, Lion Stars, tireless devotion,
On Thee I rely upon, in this dark ocean;
Shining all seven virtues, by which I shall live,
Thy ardent light spans all hues, may it ne’er falter.
Thy roar echoes across stars, in our endless strife!

And there’s another warm gleam, seen from long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, who’ve felt Terra’s glow;
Forging our kinly new Realm, through the oaths we swear,
May we carry Thy glory, past Thy final glare,
Bearing all our arduous scars, through the night’s dour tar!

Lyrics (Pan-Terran League version):
I vow to Thee, my Lodestar, tireless devotion,
On Thee I rely upon, in this dark ocean;
Shining all seven virtues, by which I shall live,
Thy ardent light spans all hues, may it ne’er falter.
Thy ray flares across stars, in our endless strife!

And there’s another warm gleam, seen from long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, who’ve felt Terra’s glow;
Forging our kinly new Realms, through the oaths we swear,
May we carry Thy glory, past Thy final glare,
Bearing all our arduous scars, through the night’s dour tar!

Starwards, Heart of Senaka

This is the anthem of HM Astral Service (all navies combined). It's inspired by Heart of Oak, but considerably longer and cultural references, like the use of Senaka wood as ship's masts and the founder of the navy, Astral High King Julian the Starwalker.

Lyrics:

Come, cheer up, my lads, ‘tis with gallantry we steer,
Across heaven’s tar, roaring with a jolly cheer!
Honour your forebears, as the freeborn heirs you are,
For who are so free as those roaming endless stars?

(Chorus)
Starwards, Heart of Senaka!
Starwards, men of gallantry!
Rooted in ages past: we shall always be ready,
Fighting star by star, conquering the Void between!

To the stars of yore, hear the Astral Lion’s roar,
Facing all terrors, our Kingdom shall ever soar!
The fanged stars gleaming, ‘tis the call that melts the tar,
Heralding our march ‘til even stars burn no more!

(Chorus)

Yon, who broods our sins and our downfall moulded,
Yon source of malice, whence all decay unfolded,
Shall behold the Crown, and our mighty starborne Realm,
And tremble with awe as we’ll yet seize the helm!

(Chorus)

The Realm triumphant, our ships rule across the stars!
We’re ever ardent, in spite of our accrued scars!
From the Starwalker, to the humblest forester,
We’ll stand ever loyal, as the olden mariner!

(Chorus)

So lift up your chins, gaze upon the heaven’s tar,
Crack a hearty cheer, for the stars may be afar,
Yet your long sojourn is only just beginning,
Nor will all the stars and glory soon be dimming!

(Chorus)

The Bulwark Admiral

Personnel Dossier — Sir Avniel ben Yeter

The specialised tracks of the Royal Star Navy have produced many renowned leaders within their respective fields, though few have risen to its highest echelons. Amongst the modern commanders of fixed installations, one name stands out: Grand Admiral Sir Avniel ben Yeter. Of ancient Kinnorite descent, ben Yeter was born within the Tozorian reaches of the Rikudim al-Zmani'im colonial stream, known for its many cultural festivities. Nonetheless, ben Yeter's family had martial proclivities rather than artistic ones. Like many in his mother's lineage, he felt a deep calling to serve in the Royal Star Navy. Few, however, could have anticipated his rise to its highest ranks.

While most cadets at the Royal Naval Academies dream of voyaging across the stars, ben Yeter was fascinated by the defensive complexes that guarded them. He excelled in defensive strategy and possessed a remarkable intuition for reading a star system's astrography. This potent combination made him an exceptional commander of fixed installations, where his diligent leadership proved invaluable. His ability to adapt defensive doctrine and overcome unfavourable odds during wargames earned him a reputation throughout the service. This niche expertise accelerated his ascent through the ranks of port command officers, making him one of the youngest Void Admirals ever to serve in the Royal Star Navy.

As commander of the Lucentia Space Defence Complex, ben Yeter oversaw the astropolitical heart of the Outreach Oversector. Working closely with both federal and state military forces, he earned a reputation as a dependable and meticulous commander. Though lacking the prestige often associated with fleet commands, he found satisfaction in his role and was widely respected for his expertise. The Velutarian War, however, would irrevocably alter the course of his career. When the Velutarians attacked Tozoria, even ben Yeter's masterful defensive preparations could not halt their advance. Facing a technologically superior enemy, he inflicted significant casualties but ultimately lost more than 95% of his forces. Wounded and with his command shattered, ben Yeter was forced to abandon his post, and it was only his skilful defence that allowed an escape route.

Following a lengthy recovery, he became convinced that his career had ended in disgrace, despite being one of the few senior commanders to survive the war's opening stages. It was at this low point that Fleet Admiral Coriton approached him. Accepting a transfer under special protocols, ben Yeter joined Coriton's command as a Rear Admiral. While his experience gave him valuable insight into Velutarian tactics, he lacked the finesse in commanding large fleet formations. After extensive wargaming with a new generation of warships armed with helical rail cannons, he emerged as one of Coriton's most promising protégés. Frequently entrusted with covering Coriton's withdrawals, ben Yeter's defensive mastery earned him widespread acclaim and the sobriquet the Bulwark Admiral.

His victory at the Battle of the Gates of Death was particularly celebrated as a masterpiece of innovative naval warfare. During the engagement, then Admiral ben Yeter concealed his fleet by docking his warships together and disguising them as fixed installations orbiting the famed cluster of black holes. As the unsuspecting Velutarian force advanced to investigate, gravitational distortions obscured the true nature of the formation. Only when the enemy had closed to short range did the trap spring. Casarian warships surged forward and used powerful gravitic tractor beams to force Velutarian vessels into the inescapable gravitational wells of the surrounding black holes. Through a scheme requiring intricate manoeuvring and precise timing, ben Yeter defeated an enemy force that outnumbered his own by half. The battle was hailed as a major strategic victory and served a critical rallying point for morale.

As the war dragged on, ben Yeter steadily advanced through the ranks while learning from some of the navy's finest commanders, including the famed Sabreteeth of the Astral Lion. His growing talents eventually brought him to the Rimward Oversector, where he commanded a force comparable in size to that of his former mentor. Serving under Grand Admiral Mekongo, ben Yeter's abilities reached full fruition as he successfully combined his expertise in static defence with operational fleet warfare to blunt repeated Velutarian advances.

Despite these successes, the Velutarians succeeded in eliminating several Grand Admirals in succession within the theatre. In service to the Starborne Realm, ben Yeter was elevated to the Grand Admiralty, becoming a peer of Grand Admirals Mekongo and Saraiva. Together, the three commanders, known as the Rim's Triad, defended the Rimward Oversector for the remainder of the conflict.

Despite his unusual background and unorthodox path to high command, ben Yeter remains deeply respected throughout the Royal Star Navy. Though not considered as formidable an offensive tactician as some of his peers, his steadfast resolve in the face of overwhelming odds more than compensates for his comparatively less illustrious battle record. Although his offensive to celebrate Grand Admiral Palsania's liberation of the Tozorian Corridor stands out alongside his victory at the Gates of Death. Grand Admiral ben Yeter also stands as a rare example of successful cross-track advancement, inspiring numerous port command officers to pursue broader naval careers of their own. Yet despite his achievements, he remains critical of efforts to expand non-Terran integration as a means of augmenting naval doctrine. Instead, he argues that the specialised non-fleet tracks—including Grand Admiral Saraiva's carrier-based tactics—already provide ample opportunities for innovation, a belief reflected in the reforms he enacted throughout the Royal Star Navy's fixed-defence establishment.

[Astral Lion] Starship Masts — An interstellar navy that manages forests because of maritime traditions

Greetings all, I recently figured out a whimsical tradition of one of my setting's space navies. The picture above aims to illustrate the scope of this tradition. It combines Sequoia-like trees with Sweden's Navy Forest on the island of Visingsö. The Senaka trees are found in a Cheyenne descendant state on the arboreal world of Cascadia, the second colonised world in the capital star system of the Casarian Star Kingdom. Like the real Sequoia trees, it's named after a Native American.

Credits: The photograph—titled Sixteen mounted soldiers of F Troop standing in front of "Grizzley Giant" —was taken Charles C. Pierce in California circa 1900.

Ship's Masts

Each vessel constructed in HM Astral Service of the Casarian Star Kingdom is officially baptised in the mast-stepping ceremony. This peculiar ceremony finds its origins in the sailing ships of maritime navies, where coins were placed beneath a mast to carry good luck. During the final stage of construction, the ship’s first commanding officer places a steel coin, after which the mast is placed on top of it. Following the mast-stepping ceremony, the ship's name, the name of her first commanding officer, and the inscription carried upon that officer's service cutlass are inscribed onto the exposed faces of the mast on the quarterdeck and bridge. Subsequent commanders and their chosen inscriptions are added during change of command ceremonies, transforming the mast into a living chronicle of the vessel's history. This tradition has directly inspired His Majesty’s Astral Service anthem Starwards, Heart of Senaka, a ceremonial quick march with sung lyrics played at important events like the mast-stepping ceremony.

During the mast-stepping ceremony, as well as decommissioning and change of command ceremonies, the mast receives a blessing according to the commanding officer’s religion or the monarch’s religion in case the commander is irreligious. Likewise, battle honours and the service cutlasses of notable commanders or flag officers are enshrined upon the exposed faces of the mast during ceremonial observances, becoming permanent fixtures of the vessel's living history.

The mast itself is a large pillar running from the ventral to the dorsal side of the ship and must have exposed sides in the quarterdeck and bridge. Moreover, it's incorporated into the ship's internal architecture and serves a largely ceremonial role. Because of these requirements, natural Senakan wood is used, which is cultivated on multiple military worlds. Originally named after the pioneer Senaka of the Confederacy of Sutaia, these fast-growing behemoths can reach up to 120 m in height and trunks of 12 m, making them ideal for their ceremonial function aboard ships.

Although these masts historically ran throughout the many decks of a vessel, the tradition persists, and masts have been shortened to accommodate the spinal helical rail cannons that shape modern Casarian naval doctrine. Nevertheless, these masts are placed uninterrupted from the ship’s bridge at the centre of the vessel all the way to the exposed quarterdeck.

After either decades or centuries of service, when a ship is decommissioned, the mast will be removed, and the steel coin reused for another vessel, which is believed to carry on the good luck. Through specialised arboricultural techniques, the mast is regenerated into a living Senaka tree and then planted in so-called Astral or Naval Forests as a testament to a ship’s service. These forests hold great cultural importance throughout the Star Kingdom and are at present maintained by the Royal Auxiliary Navy, which retains a dedicated Forester rate for their stewardship. From these trees then sprout other trees that are in turn used as starship masts, creating a palpable century-spanning national heritage. A large proportion of these forests are found in regions with strong naval traditions, such as the Elymeric Reach and Tozorian Corridor. The oldest such forest is situated in the Confederacy of Sutaia on Cascadia. Additionally, local forests also name specific breeding trees after naval commanders of particular renown whose origins are found on the respective world.

The Paladin of the Steel Crown

Personnel Dossier — Sir Terryl Weston, Baron of Haucrate

Amongst the renowned Elymeric admiralty of the Casarian Star Kingdom, one lineage stands apart. The Westons are not only the Duke Astrals of the Redoubt, but have also stood alongside the Casarion dynasty since the Promethean War. Their loyalty and unwavering service have manifested in both politics and the military. Within every generation, their greatest champions are celebrated as the Paladins of the Steel Crown. In modern times, that title belongs to Sir Terryl Weston, heir to the current Duke Astral. Like his forefather Roger Weston during the Promethean War, Terryl embraced a life of duty and service. Though raised amidst political courts and noble obligations, he chose the naval life befitting his lineage.

Terryl cherished his years at the Royal Naval Academy of Elysium. He relished the fact that status carried little weight within its halls and eagerly mingled with cadets from every social background. Fascinated by the art of command, he challenged every new acquaintance he could find in battle simulators, studying their habits and methods of thinking. This broad foundation served him well after earning his commission as a tactical officer. Through countless wargames, Weston steadily proved his ability and rose through the ranks, though he occasionally declined promotions that he believed were influenced more by his family name than his own merits. The outbreak of the Velutarian War, however, would bring an end to such self-imposed restraint.

Rear Admiral Weston was not immediately deployed to the front and remained assigned to the standing forces of the Redoubt Oversector. Nevertheless, he devoted himself to studying every fragment of intelligence concerning the Velutarians while relentlessly drilling his crews. Despite his dedication, he could not identify a reliable means of overcoming the enemy's overwhelming technological superiority. Only with the arrival of Fleet Admiral Coriton's reforms did Weston find the framework he needed to challenge the Velutarians on more equal footing. Several of his academy friends served under Coriton, and Weston frequently exchanged ideas and observations with them. Indeed, the Grand Admiralty actively encouraged such exchanges in order to accelerate the development of new doctrine across the Royal Star Navy. Largely self-taught in the emerging Trochilic School, Weston refined his understanding through extensive simulations and practical experimentation. When the Velutarian advance reached the Redoubt, he emerged as one of its most effective defenders, personally saving the Elymeric Reach. His accomplishments drew the attention of Fleet Admiral Coriton himself, who requested Weston's transfer following the expansion of his command.

Serving directly under Coriton, Weston further honed his military acumen while continuing to exchange ideas with fellow officers. His growing excellence earned him a well-deserved promotion, though he initially refused it. Only after Periastral Admiral Coriton explicitly identified his greatest strength as that of a disseminator of doctrine did Weston relent and accept the promotion. Throughout the remainder of the war, he gradually outgrew Coriton's immediate command, distinguished by an exceptional ability to absorb, refine, and share the evolving Trochilic School. It was precisely this quality that Coriton had recognised in him.

After playing a key role in halting the Velutarian advance and liberating nearly a third of the Redoubt Oversector, Weston's meteoric rise culminated in his promotion to Grand Admiral, succeeding three consecutive Grand Admirals who had fallen in short succession. At the head of an Armada of his own, he became a central figure in the liberation of the Redoubt and later contributed significantly to the relief of Grand Admiral Amazu's legendary defence. Though he suffered setbacks and costly reverses throughout the conflict, Weston consistently endured, rallying the Steel Crown's subjects through the war much as his forefathers had done before him. His most celebrated achievement came during the Battle of Sideria, where he defeated a Velutarian force twice the size of his own while simultaneously coordinating multiple neighbouring fronts. It was this feat, alongside his unwavering service, that earned him the Weston sobriquet as the Realm's current Paladin of the Steel Crown.

Following the unforgiving conflict, Grand Admiral Weston retained his command within the Redoubt, overseeing extensive wargames designed to further develop and refine the Trochilic School. Although his battle record falls only slightly short of that of the Sabreteeth of the Astral Lion, Weston's greatest legacy lies in the doctrinal growth of the officers he has mentored. He continues to cultivate this strength through a circle of Elymeric commanders known as the Elymeric Circle, a body dedicated to exploring the furthest potential of Coriton's principles. A doctrinal expert, mentor, and tireless servant of the Steel Crown, Sir Terryl Weston has once again demonstrated the hardened steel heart for which the Grand House of Weston is renowned.

Looking for feedback for the command structure of a vast interstellar navy

Hello there, I'm looking for some genuine feedback regarding my setting. I'll keep the context brief. So this is the command structure of one of the two armed branches of a vast interstellar empire known as the Casarian Star Kingdom spanning billions of stars. Technological assumptions are that communication is instantaneous (using quantum entanglement technology). FTL has both Alcubierre warp drive and hyperspace which can be accessed using Lagrange points, each have their niche uses, but in-system travel is far slower compared to these and uses brachistochrone trajectories. A body like the Joint Chiefs exists in the Royal Arms Council that administers both primary branches.

Now, the service I'm to refine is His Majesty's Astral Service, tasked with the spacebound operations separetely from the ground-based Royal Grand Army. Its mission statement is as follows: The organisation, administration, sustainment, and employment of all space warfare assets of the Casarian Star Kingdom, including military-controlled worlds. To that end, it is divided into specialised sub-branches that evolved over time. I'm looking to find gaps and overlaps within this command structure.

Organisational tree:

His Majesty's Astral Service

├── Royal Star Navy

│ ├── System Defence Fleets

│ ├── Royal Marine Force

│ │ └── Orbital Drop Assault Commando Corps

│ └── Royal Naval Defence Force

├── Royal Auxiliary Navy

│ └── Royal Auxiliary Extraction Service

└── Royal Expeditionary Force

├── Royal Expeditionary Starfleets

└── Royal Pioneer Corps

Royal Star Navy

The RSN is the primary offensive spacebound arm. It's characterised by strong naval traditions and integrated branches such as starflight (space air force) and intelligence operating directly within the main command structure. It operates large million to billion scale "wall" formations that mimic naval line doctrine.

Roles:

-The preparation of space forces necessary for the effective prosecution of war.

-The maintenance and operation of fixed and defensive installations.

-Supporting and implementing national policies coordinated by the Commander-in-Chief.

-The development of new naval tactics, equipment, techniques, and organisational structures of naval combat and service elements.

-The protection of the Casarian Star Kingdom and Mankind's survival.

System Defence Fleets

The decentralised defensive space navies that operate within the territories of member states within the federal structure of the Star Kingdom. These are autonomous and may pursue their own doctrine, but remain subordinate to the centralised federal RSN. They act as a deliberate layer for the defence-in-depth doctrine as well as experimental grounds for the larger space navy.

Roles:

-The preparation of state space forces for the effective prosecution of in-system or inter-cluster defensive warfare.

-Supporting and implementing state policies pertaining to territorial naval security..

-The prevalence as a strategic reserve capable of supporting the operations of the national space forces under the conditions of total war.

Royal Marine Force

Originally the naval infantry branch, the Royal Marines have evolved to specialise in planetary assault. This happens largely through specialised spacecraft that make planetfall (e.g. the Acclamator in Star Wars). Depending on the conflict, they may also be stationed on-board ships if hostile forces prefer boarding actions. However, the latter has become widely unpopular, but Royal Marines are still trained for said combat due to historic reasons.

Roles:

-Seizure and defence of advanced planetary bases and other large-scale planetary assault operations to support strategic objectives set by the Royal Arms Council.

-The development of tactics, techniques, and equipment used for orbital or orbital insertion infantry forces.

Orbital Drop Assault Commando Corps

The special forces of the Royal Marines that act like Halo's ODSTs. They operate similarly to modern-day parachutists, but specialised for orbital insertions. They are recruited directly from Royal Marines and have strong traditions of their own.

Roles:

-To train and lead the unconventional warfare force specialised in orbital insertions to accomplish national objectives implemented by the Royal Arms Council.

-The conduct of special reconnaissance, direct action, and unconventional warfare operations through orbital insertion methods.

Royal Naval Defence Force:

This is the modern branch dedicated to naval infantry. They provide on-board security on RSN & RAN ships.

Roles:

-Providing on-board ship and station security, including upholding military law.

-On-board defence of ships and stations from hostile boarding actions.

-Development of tactics and techniques used for on-board and EVA naval infantry warfare.

Royal Auxiliary Navy

The RAN is the logistical naval branch. It has become a respectable force of its own as the military grew in size and even gained increased autonomy as civilian control of the military was abolished in recent years. The RAN is the blood of His Majesty's Astral Service, providing the necessary resources across all branches as well as sensory combat support among its many operations. They not only operate the logistical hubs, but also supply offensive frontlines by harvesting local resources and extending hub-and-spoke supply networks. They are directly inspired the UK's Royal Auxiliary Fleet.

Roles:

-The preparation of logistics and operational support of all space forces assets for the effective sustainment of the prosecution of war.

-The manufacture, storage, transportation, and distribution of supplies and materials to all armed services.

-The spacelift of the Royal Grand Army.

-Providing auxiliary combat operations to naval formations.

-Providing humanitarian aid to Casarian and non-Casarian actors in line with national policies implemented by the Commander-in-Chief.

Royal Auxiliary Extraction Service

A specialised ground-based engineering and mining corps within the Royal Auxiliary Navy tasked with the acquisition of resources for the Astral Service.

Roles:

-The operation and maintenance of the extraction of raw resources from celestial bodies.

-The processing of resources into materials for (in-orbit) manufacturing of HM Astral Service equipment.

Royal Expeditionary Starfleets

The spacebound navy of the Royal Expeditionary Force tasked with the interstellar exploration and initial colonisation. Think if of it as Star Trek's more belligerent Starfleet, dedicated solely to exploration.

Roles:

-The exploration and assessment of uncharted star systems for in-system astrographic aperture points, resources, and colonial expansion.

-Exerting the Star Kingdom’s claim in uninhabited systems and establishing a permanent presence within a newly claimed star system.

-The construction and maintenance of rudimentary faster-than-light gateway infrastructure.

-The provision of interstellar transport, security, and logistical support to colonial expeditions, newly established settlements, and Expansion Zones.

-Supporting the initiation of diplomatic relations with newly encountered foreign powers.

Royal Pioneer Corps

The ground-based exploration forces for the Royal Expeditionary Force. They are the boots on the ground that explore new worlds, catalogue species, and evaluate colonisation candidates. They have a strong tradition, predating even the Star Kingdom itself.

Roles:

-The evaluation of the ecosystems and native lifeforms of celestial bodies for colonisation.

-Supporting the establishment of diplomatic relations with local sovereign states.

-The prospection of colonial settlement sites.

-The establishment, maintenance, and operation of expeditionary outposts.

Thoughts

I think the primary gap in the command structure is a direct air force command that supports the planetary assaults of the Royal Marines. This is sort of crucial I think, as ground-based doctrine is centred around airspace superiority, providing close air support.

The Chameleon

Personnel Dossier — Dame Cassandra Arnolds, Duchess of Tharillia

Out of the Casarian heroes who arose during the Velutarian War, Grand Admiral Dame Cassandra Arnolds is perhaps the most defiant. As a native of the Outreach Oversector, she refused multiple retreat orders and exemplified Tozorian resilience. Born the seventh child of the planetary monarchs of Tharillia—a rural world located in the fringes of the Tozorian Corridor—Arnolds was instilled with a sense of duty from an early age. Never expected to inherit the planetary throne, the younger Arnolds sibling enlisted in the Armed Services. Cassandra herself chose to carry on her family's tradition of distinguished Tozorian admirals in the Outreach Oversector, much like the famed Elymeric admiralty within the Redoubt.

At the Royal Naval Academy, Arnolds excelled academically and explored her affinity for intelligence. After her graduation, she became an intelligence officer and frequently used familial connections within the Royal Expeditionary Starfleets to anticipate upcoming threats to the outwards expansion of the Outreach Oversector. Because of this combination of meticulous dedication and familial connections to supplement official intelligence, Arnolds quickly rose through the ranks as a dependable junior officer.

As she pursued a command of her own, she leaned into her specialisation. In preparation for wargames, Arnolds meticulously dug into the personnel files of her adversaries, coming to comprehend them at a deeper level than most would. Because of her exceptional pattern recognition, Arnolds was able to predict and exploit the weaknesses of her peers. With a remarkably flexible set of tactics and her innovation in an experimental stealth system using a warship's nano-paint coating to blend into the interstellar backdrop, she earned the nickname the Chameleon.

A seasoned Admiral in her own right by the outbreak of the Velutarian Crisis, Admiral Arnolds found the lacklustre intelligence on the new Casarian adversaries disturbing. The initial Velutarian onslaught that swept across her native stars at the start of the war was heart-wrenching. Like so many Tozorians, Arnolds lost nearly her entire family in one fell swoop, rising from 25th in the line of succession to 3rd by the First Battle of Tozoria. This also laid the groundwork for her controversial actions when her formation was ordered to retreat from falling frontlines. Admiral Arnolds refused these orders. She vowed she wouldn't let her ancestral worlds be ravaged without a fight.

Rather than succumb to paralysing grief, Arnolds' resolve hardened. She began to operate her fleet in a clandestine manner, using her ingenious stealth systems aboard coasting intelligence-gathering strikecraft. Where Grand Admiral Tinai acquired intelligence on Velutarian ship design, Admiral Arnolds began cataloguing Velutarian operational patterns. Unlike any other naval commander, she came to identify Velutarian command habits and detect strategic priorities at a level unmatched by her peers. Advancing through the ranks by delivering selective yet decisive blows, she became a rallying figure amongst the Outreachers.

With her victories, her talent for understanding the Velutarian war machine, and the crumbling command structure that remained within the Outreach Oversector, Admiral Arnolds ascended into the Grand Admiralty with unprecedented swiftness. Emboldened by the Coriton Protocol, Grand Admiral Arnolds continued to build an organised resistance and intelligence network from the scattered safe pockets ignored by the Velutarian advance. It was her data that affirmed High Admiral Coriton's speculation that the Velutarians aimed to decapitate the Star Kingdom by capturing the capital world, as well as identifying the experimental Velutarian technology neutralised by Operation Quantum Hardening.

When her remaining siblings were killed in action, she finally inherited her mother's estate, becoming the enduring Duchess of Tharillia. Honouring a promise to her family and people, she organised covert supply shipments across the Outreach, sustaining isolated resistance movements while High Marshal Garrad coordinated strategic support. Her continued data collection on the Velutarians also expedited the offensives of both High Admiral Coriton and Zhikov following the Turning Gleam. By providing detailed assessments of Velutarian commanders, she enabled peers such as Grand Admiral Carrington to exploit enemy weaknesses with deadly efficiency in their respective campaigns.

Having played a crucial role in the eventual liberation of the Outreach Oversector, Grand Admiral Arnolds focused on relief campaigns once Tharillia was liberated. She supported the efforts of both Grand Admiral Palsania and Grand Marshal Garrad to psychologically rehabilitate the scarred inhabitants of the Outreach Oversector. However, she would continue to play a pivotal and pre-emptive role in gathering intelligence in the Star Kingdom's subsequent conflicts. She was caught off guard only by the Vengaeran Incursion, a threat that had eluded every Casarian intelligence agency. Since then, she has become a vocal proponent of developing deep infiltration networks beyond conventional areas of operation and frontier expansion zones. Consequently, this gave birth to Operation Farsight, which sought to explore the distant Tyvreki Reach and eventually discovered Meridian, the galaxy's foremost diplomatic hub.

In contemporary times, Grand Admiral Arnolds is a close friend of Grand Admiral Palsania, collaborating on restoration projects across the Outreach Oversector and adopting marigold flowers as an official symbol of her duchy. While an avid adopter of High Admiral Coriton's Trochilic School, she remains a vocal sceptic—like Grand Admiral Tinai—regarding further non-Terran integration within the Royal Star Navy, warning that such precedents may eventually escalate into open rebellion. Similarly, her experiences in the Velutarian War have shaped a doctrinal vision of distributed hub-and-spoke networks centred on dedicated military worlds and logistics chains rather than relying on the integration of Royal Auxiliary Navy commands within Royal Star Navy formations. Lastly, in trusted circles, she shares Grand Admiral Carrington's concerns regarding the neighbouring Zelvan Dominion, foreseeing an eventual prolonged conflict with the slaver state.

Although having seen fewer battles than the most battle-hardened naval commanders, Grand Admiral Arnolds remains an undisputed legend within the Royal Star Navy, having shaped the course of wars through information and insight as much as others did through battle.

The Miracle Quartermaster

Personnel Dossier — Sir Ameqran u Izem ath Yugurten Malek, Agallid of Abeid-Kabylia

Grand Admiral Sir Ameqran Malek is a tall and renowned figure within His Majesty's Astral Service. Like Grand Admiral Piștîvan, his contributions to the Royal Star Navy stem from his dual service in the Royal Auxiliary Navy and have become a benchmark to the Realm on integrating RAN elements within standing RSN formations, naval reforms implemented by High Admiral Coriton. Malek was born on the Amazighian homeworld in the Throneworlds to a modest family of musicians. Although an avid player of the Lotar lute in his youth, his true calling lay across the stars of the Casarian Star Kingdom, a realm he felt connected to through his music.

During his studies at the Royal Naval Academy of Amazighia, he grew fond of logistics and eventually pursued a dual commission in both the Royal Star Navy and Royal Auxiliary Navy. Having earned rank and renown in both navies, Malek excelled both as a tactician and administrator. However, his talent of integrating RAN operations within the RSN remained largely unnoticed during the wargames he partook in. Moreover, his dedication to his military career was commendable, taking posts far away from home in the Coreward Oversector.

By the outbreak of the Velutarian Crisis, Malek had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Admiral in the RSN and Vice Admiral in the RAN. Although mobilised to his RSN formation, he did not see immediate deployment to the front as the forces within the Coreward Oversector were designated as strategic reserves. Nonetheless, Lieutenant Admiral Malek excessively experimented with an integrated command structure across fleet formations in wargames. His unique perspective and insights within the Royal Auxiliary Navy allowed him to surpass his peers within the new Coritonian paradigm. This caught the attention of his superiors, and he was eventually invited to join Fleet Admiral Coriton's command.

Under Fleet Admiral Coriton's direct leadership, the recently promoted Vice Admiral (RSN) Malek provided invaluable expertise in the organisation of deep strike fleets. However, with a clear primacy of his RSN commission, Malek proved himself a capable naval commander in his own right, winning battles of his own throughout the war as the Miracle Quartermaster. This cemented him not only as a war hero, but also a naval reformer akin to Grand Admiral Piștîvan. By the end of the conflict, Malek's prowess in both battle and administration had earned his mentor's acclaim, and he eventually ascended into the Grand Admiralty shortly before the Third Mardaki Crusade. Invested into the Casarian Peerage, Malek also accepted his nomination as the monarch of a Abeid-Kabylia, a new world in an Amazighian colonial stream within the Coreward Oversector that developed as part of High Chancellor Varinderjeet Singh Sankhalan's Million Worlds Initiative.

Grand Admiral Malek's legacy, despite his own victories during the Velutarian War, remains rooted in the perfection of High Admiral Coriton's logistical naval reforms. Where High Admiral Zhikov and the Sabreteeth of the Astral Lion perfected Coriton's doctrine in offensive operations, Grand Admiral Malek did so for the logistical operations. A fact honoured by his children, who in Amazighian custom, have adopted the new dynastic naming participle of "ath Ameqran" as heirs of Abeid-Kabylia.

Author's Note

Grand Admiral Malek is meant to be a Amazigh (Berber) heritage and his name reflects that. With the colonial founders of the Casarian Star Kingdom wishing to revitalise and preserve the many human cultures, the administrative system became much more flexible and historical naming conventions returned. For the Amazighians, this patterns follows their ethnic naming convention while retaining Arabised surnames which remain hereditary, resulting in the following structure:

[Given Name] u [Father's Given Name] ath [Tribal ancestor] [Legal Surname].

"Ath" is the specific form used in the Kabylia region in Algeria and other tribes might use "Aït", but the meaning of "descendant of" remains the same. Similarly the "u" denotes "son of" has the feminine form of "ult".

The Marigold Paladin

Personnel Dossier — Sir Sanjeev Palsania, Raja of Galgotadhara

Grand Admiral Sir Sanjeev Palsania is remembered throughout the Starborne Realm as the Marigold Paladin, the officer whose efforts transformed a simple flower into one of the most enduring symbols of Casarian resilience. Whereas most are renowned for their contributions, either as innovators or victors of strategic battles, Palsania is best known for his unique cultural impact and optimistic demeanour. His character was shaped in the lush fields of Asamandhara, where he grew up amongst fellow Hindus. Like their ancient Gujarati ancestors, the Palsanias held a strong maritime tradition that now extended beyond the seas to the stars. Born the fifth child of a freight magnate, Sanjeev frequently visited the expansive distant family that lived all across the colonial stream in the Outreach Oversector. Despite a promising business career, he chose to serve the Star Kingdom as he became inspired by his many uncles who took service in the Royal Star Navy, Royal Auxiliary Navy and the Royal Expeditionary Starfleets.

Palsania carried his cheerful demeanour with him to the Royal Naval Academy, making friends beyond ethnic lines. Although graduating as a gravitic shields officer, Palsania showed early command potential for his unique charm that allowed him to maintain cohesion amongst crews. When he eventually gained a command of his own, he leveraged this trait into an edge during wargames. As he progressed in rank, his command style was one of exceptional unity amongst subordinate commanders. Moreover, he also gained command of experimental ships equipped with spinal helical rail cannons and became an early advocate for the widespread adoption of the new weaponry, stating that its penetrative power was a revolutionary innovation.

With the outbreak of the Velutarian War, now Admiral Palsania's native stars were engulfed by the advancing onslaught. Outclassed by the superior Velutarian technology, Palsania's forces organised a massive evacuation of inhabited worlds. Bolstered by System Defence Fleets and the experimental warships, Palsania performed a commendable retreat, but still suffered heavy losses. When Vice Admiral Coriton's proposal reshaped Casarian naval doctrine, Palsania adopted it swiftly and implemented his own interpretation of the emerging Trochilic School amongst his commands. Although unable to achieve the same excellence as High Admiral Coriton or Zhikov, Palsania remained a proficient commander with a respectable track record.

His most reputable deed came during the Casarian counter-offensives following the Turning Gleam. When his people returned to their ravaged worlds, they adopted a new tradition that evolved from those left behind in the Velutarian onslaught. As a sign of hope and quiet defiance against an exceptionally brutal enemy, they planted marigold flowers. Thus, in honour of their spirit, Palsania—now a Grand Admiral due to the strained command structure—ordered the widespread planting of marigold flowers on liberated worlds. Together with his deepened partnership with High Succour Admiral Dame Alyson Marley, he flooded the liberated worlds of the Outreach Oversector. This renewed hope culminated in his masterful liberation of the Tozorian Corridor, the astropolitical centre of the Oversector, cementing his reputation as a commander whose abilities extended well beyond morale and cohesion.

Despite no deployments in subsequent conflicts, Grand Admiral Palsania became a symbol of the resilient colonial spirit so deeply entwined with the culture of the Outreach Oversector. Since his campaign of distributing marigolds across liberated worlds, the Casarians from across all colonial streams have styled him the Marigold Paladin. In modern times—particularly in the Outreach Oversector—the marigold has become a near-equivalent of the poppy worn on Veterans' Day, although it holds the subtle nuance of hope rather than purely solemn grievance. In a final commitment of that resilience, Grand Admiral Palsania accepted his nomination to become a planetary monarch on a new frontier world in the Galgotavistar Sector. Palsania had previously refused such nominations, but the colonists of Galgotadhara—roughly meaning "that which holds marigolds"—were adamant in pursuing the tradition he popularised. Since then, colonial streams throughout the Outreach Oversector have coloured towns and cities in marigold hues during public festivities, often using flowers imported directly from Palsania's Galgotadharan Raj.

Author's Note

Colonial streams are a Casarian term for the phenomenon whereby outward expansion is characterised by several economic branches across ethnic lines. These branches are fuelled under the Star Kingdom's policy of chartered expansionism that greatly empowers corporate expansion. Thus, entrepreneurs and specialised corporations from local states claim new worlds, which develop strong economic ties to ancestral member states throughout their development.

The phenomenon is a continuously evolving one and is also characterised by branches. When branches meet from different streams, hybrid cultures emerge across ethnic—and sometimes species—lines. This in turn can develop into its own stream, like the Neo-Babylonian Mardukite Stream and the Neo-Byzantine Asterian Stream. As a result, the major streams form the ethnic and cultural core of the various Terran ethnicities while ensuring a healthy interaction with intermediaries to bolster the Realm's commerce.

Notably, this evolved out of the ancient desire of Casarian progenitors to preserve their ethnic cultures. However, a few instances of ethnic tensions have been documented and fall under the prerogative of the Ministry of Unity. Although culturally explicit and noticeable within the Star Kingdom's demographics, colonial streams are not static and rather serve as a stabilising medium of cultural exchange. Some initial critics have argued it solidifies and determines ethnic growth, but evidence shows multiple colonial streams of the same ethnic group emerging from the core and virtually every interethnic mixture is present in the Casarian Star Kingdom. Experts believe this was caused by the heterogenous ethnic nature of the core as during the initial stellar trek, the Casarians colonised worlds without planned colonial streams in mind.

Notable examples of hybrid cultures are the Bogyrians who adopted Orthodox Christianity but retain ancient Circassian traditions and the Mirakbians who are a mixture of ancient Germanic and Arabic cultures. Chief amongst them is the Elymeric culture, a blend of old North-American and French cultures, which has given rise to many legendary admirals like High Admirals Coriton and Castex, as well as numerous members of the Weston dynasty. The phenomenon has also given rise to the popular Casarian saying "All the streams lead to the Casarius". Overall, the phenomenon is lauded by most Casarians as diverse cultures flourish in it without homogenising into a monoculture.

The Realm's Wrath

Personnel Dossier — Dame Lyanna Carrington, Kinsharra of Avarex

Grand Admiral Dame Lyanna Carrington, Kinsharra of Avarex, is remembered throughout the Starborne Realm as the Realm's Wrath, a naval commander whose relentless pursuit of the Velutarians made her one of the most feared heroes of the Royal Star Navy. Whilst many veterans of the Velutarian War carried scars of grief and hatred, few embodied the uncompromising fury of a civilisation fighting for its survival as completely as Carrington.

Born within the vibrant baronies of the karst world of Calymmia, Lyanna grew up amongst the many cultures that called its lush caverns and fertile sink valleys home. Inspired by the Realm that had transformed worlds like her own into thriving homes for Mankind, she developed a fascination with the stars at a young age. Though her family had not produced a military officer in centuries, she answered the Lion's Call and enrolled in the prestigious Royal Naval Academy, setting herself upon a path that would one day make her one of the most renowned admirals in Casarian history.

During her stay at the Royal Naval Academy, she became a fierce leader amongst students. Not only did she butt heads with stubborn colleagues, but she also challenged some of her teachers during courses. Nevertheless, she earned the respect of her peers and superiors. Once she graduated with full honours and earned her commission as a tactical weapons officer, she began her long service across the stars of the Starborne Realm. In her earlier career, she forged close relationships with officers hailing from the Core Oversector, but as she sought a command of her own, she pursued posts in both the Coreward and Trailing Oversector, believing that a future conflict with the distant Zelvan Dominion was likely to break out from there in the long term. To that end, she became a prolific wargamer, battling against her colleagues from across the stars. However, the Velutarian Crisis brought an unexpected adversary that required the full attention of the Casarian military.

Like many of her contemporary colleagues, Carrington—then a seasoned Rear Admiral—was not mobilised to the front at the outbreak of the war. Instead, she focused on familiarising herself with what little intel the Casarians had on the elusive Velutarians. However, when the opportunity arose to launch a counter-offensive by the recently promoted Fleet Admiral Coriton, Carrington was amongst the first to volunteer. There, she distinguished herself like so many of the Star Kingdom's modern elite naval commanders. Compared to her peers, Carrington was far more ruthless, giving no quarter to any escaping Velutarian ships even when the strategic goals were achieved. She became a living embodiment of the Coriton Protocol's most aggressive interpretation. This became her signature as she emerged as one of High Admiral Coriton's most seasoned "ghost fleet" commanders, striking at critical Velutarian supply lines to halt their advance towards the capital. With a merciless attitude and a battle record comparable to that of the Sabreteeth of the Realm, the Office of Public Affairs bestowed upon her the nickname Realm's Wrath for her battle-tested ferocity, a reputation heavily promoted through wartime morale campaigns. She sealed her newly acclaimed reputation when she pursued the few Velutarians fleeing to the Wild Rim during High Admiral Zhikov's encirclement of their homeworld, ensuring that the last Velutarians were those on Velutaria itself.

Promoted to the Grand Admiralty in the aftermath of the brutal conflict, Carrington continued to volunteer for both the Third Mardaki Crusade and the Ralkathi Campaign. Her ire burned just as fiercely against the enslavers of the Ralkathi Dominion as it once had against the Velutarians. In the latter conflict, she played a pivotal role in the liberation of numerous worlds, showing no mercy to the enslavers and gaining the respect of the Ralkathi subjects. Taken by surprise when nominated to become the planetary monarch of a world she herself liberated, she eventually accepted the wish of the people of Avarex in the aftermath of the war. The former Dominion world was a melting pot of the various slavers and slaves of the Ralkathi Dominion and was amongst the first to expedite its integration into the Casarian Star Kingdom. In doing so, the prosperous world created a trend of expediting adoption of Casarian nobility amongst the recently liberated people.

Styling herself Kinsharra in the ancient Ralkathi tradition of kings and taking the vow in the local dialect, she became a ceremonial stateswoman and prominent symbol of integration for former Ralkathi subjects. Some speculate she merely accepted this station to familiarise herself with the governance of former slaves as a way to formulate future strategies against the Zelvan Dominion, but these claims seem largely forfeit given her dedication to her new Kinshorrate. Nevertheless, Grand Admiral Carrington stands amongst the most respected naval commanders of the Realm with a battle record few can match.

Increasingly, from her new centre of operations in the Ralkathi Integration Zone of the Rimward Oversector, Grand Admiral Carrington has become a vocal supporter of interspecies naval service and ship configuration. These efforts have yielded the experimental Raving Bearhound of Avarex-class destroyers, named after her newly adopted homeworld. Whether this will reshape naval doctrine remains a matter of intense debate within the upper echelons of the Royal Star Navy. Once lauded as the Realm's Wrath for her relentless pursuit of the Velutarians, Carrington now stands amongst the foremost advocates of integrating newly liberated peoples into the institutions of the Star Kingdom. In this, many see the essence of the Casarian ideal: merciless against its enemies, but steadfast in its commitment to those who choose to stand beneath the Steel Crown.

The Butchering of Velutaria

It's finally over. The bastards will be entombed into molten crust soon enough. — High Admiral Sir Pavel A. Zhikov

The Butchering of Velutaria

The cornerstone of recent galactic events is unequivocally the Casarian bombardment of the Velutarian homeworld on October 15th 1600 PA (29 BBT). Widely known as the Butchering of Velutaria, it cemented the complete and utter victory of the Casarian Star Kingdom over the technologically superior Velutarian Technocracy.

For more than two decades, the Casarians fought a desperate war of survival against the unparalleled Velutarians. Under Regent MacKinnon, a royal-military dictatorship ensured the survival of the Starborne Realm. With the Star Kingdom's own citizens enthralled by the Velutarian cybernetics, the conflict scarred recent memory across millions of stars. However, with enduring Casarian grit, the brutal war gave rise to numerous heroes, amongst whom High Admiral Tague, Grand Marshal Garrad, High Admiral Zhikov, and the legendary High Admiral Coriton emerged as the supreme champions of war.

With helical rail cannons revolutionising High Admiral Coriton's naval doctrine, the Casarians were able to overcome the staggering Velutarian forces in the battle known as the Turning Gleam. In the subsequent offensives, High Admiral Zhikov brought the full wrath of the Star Kingdom to bear. In a masterful final encirclement, he isolated the last remaining stronghold of the Velutarians. Raised a Peer of the Astral Lion by the High King Himself and awarded the Star Kingdom's most prestigious decorations, Zhikov set the stage for the Velutarian surrender. Yet when the Velutarians rejected the Casarian proposal, only total victory remained. Thus ended MacKinnon's regency and began the reign of the 53rd Astral High King of the Casarians, Alexander IX Casarion. In both splendour and terror.

Short Story

Alongside a new worldbuilding databank, the revamped website hosts a third entry in the Zealous Admiral short story series. You can access High Admiral Zhikov's new short story, the Butchering of Velutaria, here.

Art

The art piece above was made by the talented José Piqué Llorens. The commission depicts his interpretation of the Butchering of Velutaria as seen from the HMS Herald of Svarogezda. Central to the piece are High King Alexander IX, ordering the destruction of Velutaria His ancestral sword, Regent MacKinnon to His right, and High Admiral Zhikov and Lieutenant Admiral Jeriqwe to His left. The other characters are subordinate admirals from High Admiral Zhikov's 39th Star Corps.

The Shadow Gunner

Personnel Dossier — Sir Tshilenge Mekongo, Bilolo of Kanyama

The Velutarian War gave rise to many Casarian heroes from all strata of society. One notable example is Sir Tshilenge Mekongo, a prominent hero of the Rimward Oversector. Born amongst the purple savanna of his homeworld, Tshibala Tshikunzibile, Mekongo grew up in a small family of adherents of Kasa-Luba Animism. While riding Kabasubas, he developed a fascination with the stars and became deeply spiritual. It was this sense of destiny that convinced him to pursue a career dedicated to protecting his heritage. Upon coming of age, he enrolled in the local Royal Navy Academy.

Mekongo graduated without incident and began his career as a helmsman. Throughout his service, he familiarised himself with all manner of warships, mastering their manoeuvres through extensive wargames. He often stated that piloting a starship came as naturally to him as riding a Kabasuba. Upon obtaining a command of his own, Star Captain Mekongo became a reliable partner amongst his formations, teaching advanced manoeuvres to numerous ship crews. In subsequent wargames, he translated his expertise into a significant tactical advantage, earning the attention of his superiors. By 1573 PA, he had already attained the rank of Admiral, commanding forces throughout his native stars.

Admiral Mekongo would prove to be one of the most instrumental defenders of the Rimward Oversector. Whilst the region's Grand Admirals confronted the initial Velutarian onslaught, Mekongo diligently studied reports and directives from Naval High Command. Adopting High Admiral Coriton's trochilic warfare and adding innovations of his own, he successfully replicated many of Coriton's successes. Much like High Admiral Zhikov's exploitation of a star system's astrographic layout, Mekongo relied heavily upon orbital patterns to generate cyclical long-range volley fire whilst using celestial bodies to conceal and shield his ships. He went to great lengths to exploit his long-range advantage, at times firing volleys across multiple astronomical units. Targeting precision was provided by Royal Auxiliary Navy stealth formations, whilst the new helical rail-cannon battlecruisers struck from planetary shadows, earning him the moniker "Shadow Gunner". This potent combination allowed Admiral Mekongo to halt the Velutarian advance in the Trailing Oversector.

As the local chain of command began to crumble, Mekongo rose to the position of Grand Admiral by the fifth year of the war. Together with his fellow commanders, he organised a valiant defence against continued Velutarian offensives until the successive victories of High Admirals Coriton, Pyke, and Tague turned the tide of the conflict. Owing to the heavy losses sustained throughout the Rimward Oversector, Grand Admiral Mekongo and his counterparts refrained from participating in High Admiral Zhikov's final offensives. Instead, Mekongo maintained his position during the closing years of the war, whilst diverting portions of his forces to assist High Admiral Carrington's task force in hunting down Velutarian formations fleeing into the Wild Rim.

Grand Admiral Mekongo has since become a highly respected member of the Grand Admiralty and a vocal advocate of educational reforms that emphasise practical experience. Amongst his people, his exploits have grown legendary, earning him an invitation into the nobility of his homeworld. Since the end of the conflict, Mekongo has largely remained within the Rimward Oversector, coordinating wargames amongst his forces to maintain battle readiness. Despite this shift away from active warfare, he proved a dependable commander during the limited Ralkathi counter-offensives that accompanied the recent subjugation of their slave empire.

[Astral Lion] Ranks of the Imperial Tutelaries

Creative spree has been a boon as of late, so here's another stylised visualisation of the ranks from my space opera. This time we pay a visit to the Drakhuri Celestial Imperium's Imperial Tutelaries. In case you have a déjà-vu, it might be because I've taken inspiration from
1Wyrmshadow1's works on DeviantArt. Hopefully, you enjoy this dive into the setting's prominent progenitor empire.

Overview

The Imperial Tutelaries fall under the direct command of the Custodial Emperor. Tasked with the protection of life under the Celestial Mantle, the vast Imperial Celestial Navy (ICN) and the enduring Imperial Custodial Army (ICA) serve as its primary branches. Though the Imperial Army has been established millennia before the Drakhuri pierced the atmosphere, the Imperial Navy has taken a dominant position in warfare. In many ways, the two institutions are polar opposites in doctrine. Whereas the navy requires a hierarchical and specialised command structure, the ground forces pursue a decentralised command supported by intricate communication networks. The distinction is emblematic of the Drakhuri's distributed or federated warfare where the navy fights on integrated fronts and specialised army formations operate autonomously under an elaborate supply system. Despite the two different doctrines, the Imperial Tutelaries are not decoupled from one another and coordination between the two ensures a cohesive war machine. This mixed approach liberated of dozens of species and charted a realm so large and entire section of the galaxy is commonly referred to as the Drakhurian Arch.

Enlisted ranks

The Drakhuri Imperium prides itself in an egalitarian society, one that is also reflected within the ranks of its enlisted soldiers. Everyone can freely enlist within the titularies, from refugees to migrants, service is a pathway to imperial citizenship. Under the tutelage of rigorous non-commissioned officers, both Legionnaires and Star Mates are shaped into the workhorse that keeps the imperial military running.

Warrant Officers

Both branches use warrant officers to oversee technical field operations under so-called Techmasters. These arise directly from non-commissioned officers (E-6 onwards in ICA; E-5 onwards in ICN) and wield significant authority within their technical fields. With unmatched expertise, the officers ensure the cogs in the imperial war machine continue running.

Commissioned Officers

Commissioned officers serve as line officers throughout the military branches, responsible for leading personnel, managing ship departments, and executing tactical operations. As they rise in rank, they progress from small-unit leadership on strikecraft or cohorts to commanding vast formations capable of overrunning entire worlds. Notably, ICA officers operate more autonomously than their ICN counterparts whose disciplined wall formations serve as immutable barriers.

Legate and Flag Officers

The true operational and strategic leadership lies in Legate and Flag Officers. These senior officers direct either planetary or large-scale fleet operations. Whereas strategy fluctuates on the interstellar front dictated by Flag Officers, Legate Officers operated autonomously on planetary fronts of their choosing. While supplied by the Imperial Navy, Legates and Marshals coordinate through a communication network of their own that updates the wider army of their individual fronts. Nevertheless, this different fundamental doctrine has resulted in occasional clashes, but the Custodial Emperor maintains a careful balance between the two when tensions arise.

Port Command Officers

The Imperial Celestial Navy operates fixed installations next to its vast armadas. Like many star navies, they have dedicated ranks—rooted in maritime traditions—for these positions. Though largely subservient to mobile elements, these officers operate the vital supply hubs the binds the entire Imperial military.

Drakhuri Celestial Imperium

The Andromeda Galaxy has seen many civilisations rise and fall, with a few emerging in each galactic epoch. Yet from the last epoch, a juvenile race has endured the test of time and its empire stretches from the galaxy’s core to its furthest fringes.

As the largest star nation in the known galaxy, the Drakhuri Celestial Imperium’s triumphs are legion. From their mythic origins at the centre of their Sovereign Guardianship to the liberation of dozens of species, the legacy of the Drakhuri spans both lightyears and eons. The Imperium’s economy grows at an unbroken pace, its Legions enforce the Custodial Emperor’s will, and its byzantine politics stagger outsiders while all remains rooted in the Cillixine Pantheon.

Even time passes differently within the Imperium, with plans measured in centuries rather than decades. However, with a young and eager Emperor inheriting His uncle’s throne in recent decades, Jixillian V may bring a heterodox Drakhurian perspective to an ever-converging galaxy.

History

The Drakhuri evolved on Ikarex, a massive terrestrial world thriving under the binary stars of Rax Eshin and Rax Pallin. Under the first Emperor of Light Io, the Drakhuri claimed divine guardianship over their world, with their monarchs serving as avatars of the Cillixine Pantheon and Custodians of Life. The Age of Mythical Heroes marked the beginning of a long process of unification under the Celestine dynasty. Though it took millennia, the Celestial Sovereigns succeeded in extending their realm across successive ages of scientific and societal progress.

When the Drakhuri breached their atmosphere in the Age of Celestial Dawn, the path towards their gods was revealed. This discovery emboldened them to claim the Celestial Mantle and drove them to establish an interstellar realm. The Imperium expanded gradually, measuring its reach through century-long policies. The Drakhuri species itself diversified as numerous subspecies and allied races arose across newly settled worlds. Despite their belief in their divine guardianship, the Drakhuri were never a traditionally conquering people. Instead, they approached interstellar relations as a long-term process of legitimising their mandate.

Through mutually beneficial agreements, the Imperium cultivated a reputation as an amicable partner. Backed by credible protection guarantees enforced by a respected military, it persuaded other star nations to accept deeper integration. The Imperium also became a bastion for refugees, accepting all forms of life within its borders, including Terran colonists.

However, such relations were not always peaceful, particularly with slaver empires. While the Drakhuri initially incentivised reform, some powers resisted. After centuries of failed efforts, the Imperium adopted a more belligerent stance, viewing the neutralisation of such regimes as a sacrosanct duty. This doctrine led to repeated conflicts in the Perimede Arm against the Tebadine and Sinrathians. Yet even the reach of the Custodial Maul has limits, and rather than pursue endless crusades, the Sovereigns adopted a strategy of containment and long-term attrition.

Following the sudden death of Daerulian VII, the Cillixine Throne passed to His younger nephew. Compared to His predecessors, Emperor Jixillian V was less experienced when taking the throne. With a ruler eager to exercise His dormant powers and a converging galaxy, the Imperium remains a paramount power with an unmatched legacy from ancient explorers to liberators. Whatever astropolitical developments ensue, the Drakhurian bastion of prosperity and liberty will continue to thrive with or without the rest of the galaxy.

Politics

Out of all the galaxy’s heads of state, the Custodial Emperor holds the most power. The Celestial Sovereign, as the Avatar of Cillix, is near-infallible and may enact Imperial Edicts on matters pertaining to calamities of sapience and maintaining imperial order. However, these definitions are broad and multiple constitutional tensions have arisen as edicts supersede standing laws. During war times, these powers become absolute. In addition, the Celestial Sovereign may dissolve the Imperial Diate, serve as the commander-in-chief of the military, and hold the sole authority to alter the Constitution. However, the most comprehensive powers have largely been unused for millennia under an enlightened governance. In many ways, it is this precedent of stable rule that assuages the criticisms from within political factions and to accept these otherwise considerable constitutional powers in a millennia-old status quo.

The semi-constitutional monarchy thus relies on the Imperial Diate, a mixed parliament of elected non-seated and seated Tribunes, hereditary nobles, and Lord Protectors appointed by the Emperor. In a convoluted system of powers, internal vetoes, and a labyrinth of political conventions, the Imperial Diate’s staggering bureaucracy baffles outsiders with its complexity. Nonetheless, this democratic institution has stood the tests of time and continues to represent the Imperium’s people through consensual procedures.

The head of the Imperial Cabinet is the Prime Delegate who governs the nation at the behest of the sovereign. Though these can be dismissed by the monarch, this has become uncommon in recent millennia with it only ever being used under extreme circumstances. Elected from amongst the ranks of the Imperial Diate, the Prime Delegate remains accountable to the legislature and may serve indefinitely. As the highest elected official, the Prime Delegate presides over a byzantine executive branch at the centre of a centralised federation.

Within the Imperium, many types of states exist. From star-spanning protectorates to small city-states, the people of the Imperium exercise their right to self-determination to the fullest extent. In many ways, these polities set the degree of the dynamism within the Imperial Diate as they autonomously decide term lengths and limits of their Tribunes.

Economy

The economic prominence of the Drakhuri Celestial Imperium is renowned far beyond its borders. As the core of the Greater Celestial Prosperity Sphere, the Imperium stands as one of the galaxy’s foremost economic heartlands. With Kirillian trade routes extending its reach even further, even distant star nations are aware of its influence.

Imperial manufacturing is driven by vast forge worlds and megastructures that produce industrial goods at extraordinary scale. This industrial foundation is complemented by a thriving interstellar service sector, together sustaining the Imperium’s long-standing prosperity. Citizens benefit from universal healthcare, while entrepreneurship is actively encouraged through the cultivation of traditional skills across planetary populations.

Individuals may earn Craftsman Certification through recognised guilds, granting statutory benefits such as tax exemptions within defined revenue thresholds. As a result, local artisans leverage advanced technologies to produce highly personalised goods, while tradesmen continue to anchor local economies.

Although guildsmen enjoy stable livelihoods as independent workers or employees, megacorporations also rely on their expertise to optimise production and supply chains. While large corporations dominate interstellar trade and heavy industries, the enduring balance between guild artisans and megacorps has formed a cohesive socio-economic fabric. To preserve this equilibrium, guild interests are represented politically through the Guildsmen League within the Imperial Diate.

Culture

The Imperium serves as a true haven where migrants and refugees alike can thrive. This reflects a deeply rooted xenophilic ethos that values and protects all forms of life. Cultural practices are broadly permitted, provided they do not denigrate sapient beings, and certain rights are even extended to sentient non-biological entities.

Though not strictly pacifist, the Drakhuri’s tradition of Sovereign Guardianship has earned them a reputation as an enlightened civilisation. Nevertheless, more belligerent tendencies persist, particularly within elements of the military. Owing to their long lifespans, the Drakhuri possess centennial perspectives, which they readily share and exchange with other species.

The Imperium’s diversity is vast: insectoid collectives, synthetic intelligences, and organic species all coexist under the Cillixine Throne. Over time, demographic shifts have transformed the Imperium into a truly multicultural entity, with the founding Drakhuri species now comprising less than a fifth of the total population, yet still maintaining a strong status within society.

Religion plays a central role in Drakhurian life. With the Celestial Sovereign deeply tied to the Cillixine Pantheon, widespread devotion is unsurprising, though religious freedom remains constitutionally protected. Uniquely, synthetics in the Imperium are amongst the few artificial intelligences in the galaxy that actively practice religion. This phenomenon is often attributed by outsiders to technological limitations as synthetics are aware of their eventual degradation. Paired with the sacrifice to create offspring, the synthetics within the Imperium experience lives much alike organics. Even purely virtual constructs have been observed participating in acts of worship, a sight that often produces culture shock amongst foreigners.

Technological advancements have largely eliminated disease and extreme poverty, enabling a culture that emphasises presence and personal fulfilment. Citizens frequently pursue artistic and communal activities, often expressed through regular cultural festivals that both preserve and evolve local traditions. As a result, no two worlds within the Imperium are truly alike. Rather than enforcing a singular imperial identity, the Imperium harmonises its diversity through shared egalitarian values.

Military

The Imperium’s commitment to the protection of life—embodied in the Celestial Mantle of the Drakhuri—is upheld by the Imperial Tutelaries. Operating alongside auxiliary forces drawn from member states and protectorates, its two principal branches are the Imperial Celestial Navy and the Imperial Custodial Army.

The Celestial Navy is vast and highly adaptable, organised into fleet, circle, and order formations, each specialising in distinct operational roles. Command structures are relatively decentralised, allowing for flexibility across the immense scales of interstellar warfare. This organisational philosophy mirrors that of the Imperial Custodial Army, whose lineage stretches back to the Age of Mythic Heroes.

Despite its nominally defensive mandate, the Imperial military has conducted numerous interventions beyond its borders, particularly in liberation campaigns. Through these operations, the Imperial war machine has evolved into one of the galaxy’s most diverse fighting forces, with hundreds of species serving side by side.

Drakhurian wargaming traditions remain central to military culture. The prestigious Celestial War Games, held every ten years, bring together forces from across the Greater Prosperity Sphere. Victorious formations earn the coveted “Imperial” designation, which is retained as long as at least one participating champion continues to serve within the unit. These rituals reinforce unity, honour, and shared purpose across the Imperium’s armed forces.

Bound by a common ideal, its Legionnaires and Star Mates operate as a single star, projecting the Imperium’s guardianship across the stars.

The Titaness of Perses

Personnel Dossier — Dame Yobanna Amazu

Grand Admiral Dame Yobanna Amazu is the eldest of the Royal Star Navy's Grand Admirals and staunch supporter of deeper integration of non-Terrans within her branch. Amazu was born into a family with deep ties to the Royal Grand Army dating back to the Promethean War. Raised in the towering capital city of the Star Kingdom, she grew up amongst many cultures that have made Casapex their home, including non-Terran migrants. While jovial with both kith and kin, she yearned for the stars and like her native spire city, left a monumental legacy to the entire Starborne Realm.

Graduating from the prestigious Royal Naval Academy of Virtus, Amazu earned her commission as a tactical officer. In contrast to other naval officers, Amazu also actively pursued staff postings attached to seasoned veterans across the Star Kingdom in her early career. There she learned how officers thought, despite serving far from home. Crucially though, she was able to quickly understand colonial perspectives and empathise with them. Later on, she gained her own command on the HMS Laughing Kookaburra of Budawango in the Trailing Oversector. There she actively sought war games against an amalgamation of Casarian naval officers, including non-Terrans. Having earned a reputation as a dependable commander on half a dozen ships, Amazu returned home to raise a family while pursuing interim commands and staff postings. In these positions, she was able to hybridise colonial perspectives with those of the core. Increasingly, she became more vocal about the integration of non-Terrans over which she frequently butted heads with her colleagues. Nonetheless, Amazu's career progressed steadily over the decades, making flag rank by the age of 58 T-years. With her accrued expertise from across the Realm, she was eventually induced into the Grand Admiralty 5 T-years prior to the Velutarian War.

With her new post in a developing Perses Oversector, Grand Admiral Dame Yobanna Amazu organised many war games amongst her subordinates. In addition, she did so in a manner reflective of her own career by involving System Defence Fleets to exchange perspectives between state and federal navies. However, when the Velutarian War broke out, she quickly leveraged her position to ascertain gaps in the Velutarian onslaught. When Vice Admiral Coriton proposed his doctrine, Grand Admiral Amazu supported him. Critically though, she had built a vast network of connections within the Perses Oversector amongst the System Defence Fleets during her many war games. Thus, when she used the emergency protocols of United Defence to mobilise portions of state navies, she faced little resistance. Taking heed to the Coriton Doctrine and inspired by Grand Admiral Tinai's approach, she formed hybrid formations which included experimental helical rail cannons from state navies. This allowed her to halt the Veltuarian advance early on during their incursions into the Perses Oversector. While the Velutarians sought to capitulate the Casarians by capturing their homeworld, their search led them away from Grand Admiral Amazu's front. With a trained hybrid officer corps under her, they quickly incorporated High Admiral Coriton's rudimentary trochilic warfare within their tactics, allowing them to even the odds against the technologically superior Velutarians detached to her theatre. It was this prolonged leadership in the defence of an entire oversector that earned her the nickname of Titaness of Perses. Moreover, at the end of the war, she was elevated to the rank of Astral Commandant within the Order of the Astral Lion.

While achieving notable victories herself, Grand Admiral Amazu's true strength lay in bringing colleagues and subordinates together. However, this didn't go unchallenged. Particularly on further integrating non-Terrans, she continues to clash against factions within the Royal Arms Council and Admiralty Board. Called a radical by some and idealist by others, Grand Admiral Amazu's service has earned her voice across the entire Star Kingdom, one she is not too afraid to use against mingling conservative politicians ever since the MacKinnon Reformations. Principled to the bone, Amazu believes in an ever-reaching and ever-inclusive Starborne Realm defiantly claiming the stars like a spire city.

[Astral Lion] Ranks of the Royal Star Navy

Here's the stylised visualisation of the ranks I've created for the Royal Star Navy, the main military perspective within my space opera. Hopefully you enjoy them as much as I did when creating the doctrine behind them and designing their visuals.

Overview

The Royal Star Navy is a unique institution, even amongst its contemporary counterparts. Although it maintains a clear chain of command, it incorporates multiple specialised tracks within the same structure. Each track has their specific mandate, allowing for personnel to specialise in accordance with their talents. Though perhaps convoluted to outsiders, the Royal Star Navy maintains an additional officer corps of dedicated advisory officers, known as delegate officers, embedded within the upper echelons of command to maintain accountability. This differs from other militaries who provide far less empowerment to its enlisted ranks. With a complex and cohesive system of specialised tracks, the Royal Star Navy is able to maximise the potential of each individual under the motto: "Every man in his most competent position."

Enlisted ranks

The enlisted corps forms the operational backbone of the Royal Star Navy, carrying out technical, mechanical, and day-to-day shipboard duties. As they advance, they assume leadership roles as NCOs, overseeing teams and serving as the primary link between crew and officers.

Delegate Officers

Delegate officers are senior non-commissioned officers embedded within flag staffs to represent enlisted personnel at the highest levels of command. They act as advisors, coordinators, and safeguards against poor decision-making by ensuring strategic plans reflect frontline realities. Crucially though, they don't serve as institutionalised forms of dissent as they must continue to follow orders even after reporting their formal protests.

Warrant Officers

Warrant officers are seasoned technical specialists—promoted directly from enlisted ranks—granted limited officer authority to oversee critical systems and operations. They provide continuity and expertise in highly complex shipboard domains without transitioning into full command roles.

Commissioned Officers

Commissioned officers serve as line officers and are the primary command authority of the Royal Star Navy, responsible for leading personnel, managing ship departments, and executing tactical operations. As they rise in rank, they progress from small-unit leadership to commanding entire warships and task groups.

Staff Officers

Staff officers specialise in administration, planning, and operational support, forming the analytical backbone behind command decisions with regular line officers tacking staff positions in between posts. Staff officers of exceptionable quality can progress from Adjutant Commodore onwards in a dedicated track at flag level. While vital to strategy and coordination, they remain subordinate to officers ion active postings.

Flight Officers

Flight officers are dedicated line and command officers on board strikecraft and manage carrier-based operations. Their career track emphasises piloting, formation leadership, and increasingly large-scale flight coordination. The upper-most of these officers can progress their careers as senior line officers.

Flag Officers

Flag officers are senior leaders responsible for directing large-scale fleet operations and shaping operational and strategic outcomes. They command vast formations of ships and rely on extensive staffs and delegate officers to maintain cohesion and effectiveness.

Port Command Officers

Port command officers oversee fixed installations such as stations, fortresses, and defensive networks within star systems. Although they may command large static forces, they remain institutionally subordinate to mobile fleet commanders of equivalent rank.

Admiralty Offices

Admiralty office holders (Periastral Admirals and High Admirals) oversee the Roya Star Navy’s doctrine, administration, and long-term operational management in the Board of Admiralty. They coordinate between strategic leadership bodies—like the Grand Admiralty and Royal Arms Council—ensuring naval operations align with broader military and state objectives.

The Sea Serpent

Personnel Dossier — Sir Erdem Piștîvan

The Royal Star Navy's impressive history has given rise to a multitude of doctrinal perspectives. From elastic wall-to-wall combat with cycling lines to manage ship-based heat, to the newer trochilic doctrine of High Admiral Coriton, the Royal Star Navy strives to remain the apex star navy of the Andromeda Galaxy. This it achieves in large part by promoting the exchange of ideas through extensive wargaming. Yet even when one doctrine is formally adopted, others continue to develop. Historically, cross-branch officers have contributed significantly to this process through “outside” perspectives. One such recent example is Grand Admiral Erdem Piștîvan, whose legacy endures through his blending of naval and maritime doctrine and his role in institutional reform.

Born on the Shekurdish world of Lalisha, Piștîvan first felt the Lion's Call not when looking to the stars, but upon the waves of the western ocean near his hometown of Nîșkamêr in the Republic of Rojava. Bound to the sea from an early age, Piștîvan enlisted in the Rojavan Maritime Navy, favouring state service over federal service. Within the RMN, he rose as one of its foremost mustangs, earning wide respect. His career reached a turning point upon graduation from Officer Training School. With the same stars that had guided him at sea now calling to him more directly, he pursued a dual commission in both the RMN and the RSN. Serving through the half-pay system in both navies, Piștîvan alternated rotations between the two branches, commanding multiple ships both at sea and across the stars. This dual service forged him into a versatile fleet commander well before the Velutarian Crisis, by which time he held the ranks of Vice Admiral (RSN) and Admiral (RMN).

When the Velutarian War broke out, Piștîvan immediately mobilised for federal service. Drawing upon decades of experience, he incorporated modern maritime tactics into space combat, relying on large hunter-packs of stealth destroyers to fracture Velutarian lines. Although frequently overwhelmed, his withdrawals relied on scattering warp jumps rather than maintaining fleet cohesion, as prevailing doctrine at the time preferred. Nevertheless, his experience made him a keen tactician, and he rose rapidly through the ranks as the Velutarian onslaught decimated the existing officer corps. Against this backdrop, Piștîvan was able to make dents in the Velutarian advance, earning him renown across the Realm. Rather than employ this reputation purely as a morale instrument, he used it as leverage to address doctrinal shortcomings within the Royal Star Navy directly with Regent MacKinnon.

In Piștîvan's experience, a significant portion of commanding officers were overly rigid, with some from prideful lineages resisting the innovations of High Admiral Coriton. He himself had frequently clashed with such figures during his earlier service as an NCO across both branches. While a mustang himself, Piștîvan understood that such a career path was not universally accessible for every NCO. He instead advocated for the creation of Delegate Officers: dedicated NCO representatives embedded within the staffs of flag officers.

Survivors from the Velutarian front reported that fleet commanders often issued reckless orders against their technologically superior enemies, resulting in avoidable losses, posing a long-term problem for trained personnel. To mitigate this, Piștîvan argued that Delegate Officers would significantly reduce unnecessary casualties. Regent MacKinnon accepted this proposal and enacted their empowerment, allowing Delegate Officers to lodge formal protests for high-risk operations directly to a commander's superiors. However, they remained obligated to execute the orders of their immediate commanders pending upper review. While this reform did not necessarily produce immediate changes amongst frontline commanders, it ensured that their decisions were precisely documented, allowing high command and strategic staff to identify recurring errors and incorporate them into an evolving wartime doctrine. Furthermore, the selection of Delegate Officers from the enlisted ranks ensured that they "spoke the same language," facilitating cross-ship dialogue within fleet formations.

With the widespread adoption of this new officer class across all military branches, commanding officers were increasingly compelled to adapt to doctrine. By the eighth year of the conflict, Piștîvan had risen to the rank of High Admiral, and his Star Corps significantly slowed the Velutarian advance in the Perses Oversector, contributing to Grand Admiral Amazu's legendary defence. In the years that followed, Piștîvan's career was formally consolidated within the Royal Star Navy upon his promotion to the Grand Admiralty, ending any prospect of returning to his commission in the Rojavan Maritime Navy.

Despite lacking the illustrious battlefield record of High Admiral Zhikov or the operational finesse of Grand Admiral Pyke, Grand Admiral Piștîvan embodies the Royal Star Navy's emphasis on doctrinal evolution. His dual service remains a model for cross-branch integration, demonstrating how external perspectives can enhance institutional capability. His legacy within the RSN remains unquestioned, and he continues to contribute to doctrinal development, frequently advocating for enlisted considerations in discussions with the Lord of Admirals, Hallinar Jarda.

[Astral Lion] The Void Panther — The iron-willed lady who stalked both enemies and the Dark Void

Personnel Dossier — Dame Sun Lingxin

Most Casarian admirals try to temper the harsh reality of war, but Grand Admiral Dame Sun has long embraced it. Hailing from Qingiwa in the Rimward Oversector, she exemplifies the Pillar of Perseverance, so often associated with the colonial worlds.

Her background as an Astrogator gave her a unique edge in close in-system hyperspace jumps. With an iron will, Periastral Admiral Sun refined her expertise to coordinate deadly ambush strikes. Emboldened by High Admiral Coriton's new doctrine, Sun set out to hold the lines against the Velutarian onslaught across her native stars, favouring close-ranged fleet actions. Operating between collapsing fleet walls, she amplified the over-penetrative character of the helical rail cannons to neutralise multiple ships at once.

As a master of naval warfare, Grand Admiral Sun remains an unorthodox tactician, honoured by her people as 太空狰 (Sanzese for "Void Panther"). Even in modern times, Sun is engraved in recent memory as a matron of war. One who brought the Ralkathi Dominion to heel alongside High Admiral Zhikov himself.

[Astral Lion] The Old Bulldog — The unyielding general who reciprocated the Velutarian onslaught that took his son

Character Profile: Sir Tarron Garrad, Calon Ddraig

Although most heroes of the Velutarian War come from naval ranks, one name stands out from the Royal Grand Army: Sir Tarron Garrad. Amongst the horrors of the conflict, Captain General Garrad was entrusted with the defence of his homeworld Sigon against the Velutarian onslaught. His unyielding defiance proved instrumental in the eight-T-year resistance which saw the Velutarians cybernetically enslave his fellow Sigonese.

With the liberation of his homeworld, Garrad emerged as the Old Bulldog of Sigon. He cemented this moniker in liberation campaigns where he coordinated ground forces on thousands of Casarian worlds. Behind his resolve was his motivation to help cure one of his sons from the cybernetic enthralment of the Velutarians, a trait he continues to extend to all veterans of the Royal Grand Army.

Garrad’s legend has made him into the titan of the Royal Grand Army, serving as the seniormost member of the Grand Marshal Board and the Royal Arms Council. His voice carries weight beyond even the Lord Marshals of the Staff of the Royal Grand Army, forming the strategic doctrine of the Casarian military. Gruff yet principled, Garrad remains both a symbol of sacrifice and the enduring conscience of the horrors experienced by the Starborne Realm.

Comment

Garrad’s role shifted heavily after the Velutarian War, particularly in advocating for the rehabilitation of enthralment victims which is the conflict's controversial aftermath. If you’d like to know more about his battles and legacy, you can find it here.

[Astral Lion] The Striking Admiral

Personnel Dossier — Sir Tiberiu Vernescu

Grand Admiral Sir Tiberiu Vernescu stands amongst the Royal Star Navy’s most resilient and disciplined commanders, hailed as a master of precision in an age of change. Born beneath the Varcathian Mountains on Casarelia, he grew up amidst Siranian traditions, learning the cimbalom and performing at folk festivals. This percussive inclination in his younger years formed his rhythmic warfare emblematic of his later command style.

Breaking from his artisan roots, Vernescu rose through the Royal Star Navy as a brilliant fleet coordinator, earning the moniker of Striking Admiral for his rhythmic manoeuvres. Grounded in the Neoclassical School, he reached the rank of Vice Admiral before the Velutarian War reshaped naval doctrine. Assigned to rear defensive lines, he used the time to study Coriton’s emerging helical rail tactics, allowing him to blend innovation with classical formations to devastating effect against enemy supply lines.

From the Vengaeran Incursion to his later strategic advocacy of wider integrations of auxiliary elements, Vernescu has always stood as a symbol of unity across fleets while warning against complacency within the Core. His strength lies in balancing elements from the Neoclassical and Trochilic Schools of naval warfare. In the wake of turbulent galactic times, Vernescu remains a symbol of enduring discipline within the Starborne Realm.
