Rough price for car rentals

Hi Team. I just rented an suv in Cancun for about $23 usd a day because it’s low season and it’s pretty dead. I was wondering how much rentals go for in France. I know I can look online at major rental companies but what I learned is the price online is not the final price once you arrive. At least in the US and Mexico there are always more fees.

I will be in Lyon and tour the Avignon area befor I leave for Parks so maybe it would be easier to get a car for that part of the trip vs having to wait for trains and buses.

If anybody knows, do the car rental places work on commission? I was able to negotiate price in Mexico because I rented the car for a month.

USA game

I am both Mexican and American and want to support, anybody know any good places to watch with right crew? Big screen, maybe with some breeze, cheap dranks? I was at Sole for the Mexico one last night and it was boiling inside.

Sargassum update from JW Marriott

June 28 2026. I just got here and the water looks good despite there being some sargassum. I would totally swim in this but I don’t know why the current is always strong here

Zero stench too

Indrive rough estimates

Hey team, I usually am one of the locals giving tips but it’s now my turn to ask. How much have you paid with Indrive from ADO to Aldea Zama? What about from AZ to the Jaguar park? Aldea Zama to Gran Cenote? I usually get around on foot or rent a car, but now I am looking to economize if I don’t need the car every day.

Nervous about how much to put away

I only have one closet and I am out of room so I made a makeshift storage area in the living room with curtains. They are nice and I did disclose in the photos but I am starting to panic as a first timer:

- Do I have to empty my entryway shoe cabinet? Is it rude to put signs saying “no access”?
- Will guest go through my closet looking for more towels if they want them? I left enough for 2 people but I have a few personal ones I don’t want them to have.
- Have any guests taken things? I have a dvd collection and would be upset if someone steals one

My first exchange arrives in 2 days and I’ve been cleaning and putting clutter away but I am panicked they will find too many personal artifacts. I am a minimalist in general but I have been putting away family photos and such.

Am I worrying too much? Are signs ok?

Can I skip sanding and use paint stripper on clear lacquer?

I am refinishing a patio set consisting of two wooden chairs, loveseat, and coffee table. It was purchased about a year ago from one of those cheap sites, and it’s already faded from a golden blonde wood to ashy gray. It’s real wood so I think it’s worth a try. I have two questions:

  1. Is there a faster/easier method than sanding? My research said to sand the wood with 80 grit, then with 180 grit, then clean the wood of residue and let dry overnight. I used a detail sander and started with the coffee table with 80 grit. It was exhausting, the dust flew everywhere, I had to buy a dust mask and I didn’t even do the finishing sanding. The existing varnish is very thin and obviously it didn’t protect the wood from fading. I found some products at Home depot that seemed up to the task of stripping finishes

  2. Is there a product that is a single step stain/varnish or adds some sort of sun/water protection? I bought a stain on Amazon that promised it was protective but then the bottle says to follow with varnish or wax! So annoying. I did stain the table using the product but I have to hurry up and determine if I can layer a new product that includes a sealer or if I need to get a separate sealer just this table and buy a better product for the rest of the set.

Would you still host this guest?

I learned from this group that we can block users from contacting us. I literally just used the feature 🤣

This man submitted an inquiry for my place in Tulum for Dec 20 - Jan 27. For context, January is the peak of the peak season and because my profit margin is almost nothing, I have to maximize quick stays vs month long discounts. My weekly discount is 25% and monthly is 40%. When this booking inquiry came in, I felt like I should reduce my discount for January because the total was way less than what I get for STRs.

Anyway, this is what his message said:
“Hi, [pleasantries said here]. We are nomads currently planning our Mexico travels but need the 30 day cancellation policy when booking. We are both in our late 40's with 4 parents still holding on and we never when we will get the call and need to be flexible. If you can change just for our listing, we can book as soon as today. Let me know if you will and I appreciate any consideration.”

I told him I am always open to accommodating my guests, but blocking my calendar this far ahead for my peak season without any compensation was not a good deal for me. I asked him if he had any suggestions that could benefit us both and I also offered to honor the stay later based on availability. Answer:

“I appreciate the dialogue and understand the situation as we have a rental unit

There are plenty of others places to book and sorry but we do need that ease of flexibility. If you have a thought let me know.

Like they say. “A Bird in hand is worth two in bush”. You never know what that crazy US president might pull in a few months.

Open for mores talks though. “

The whole thing with having way more options and the bird metaphor kinda PMO but since there is a lot of competition for guests and he had 5.0 review, I still tried to meet him halfway saying “I am open to suggestions”. Answer:

I will let you think it over for the night. If you can adjust your cancellation for this one time, otherwise I will move on and select a new one tomorrow. Not looking to jump ship just planning my travels. We can stay in contact throughout and could even offer an off channel deposit say 60 days out etc.

Flexible, but at the end of the day it is just a place to stay and no worries either way”.

I am usually VERY flexible and even refund when I am given a sob story (likely fake) but this one just annoyed me so I blocked him. Allowing cancellation within 30 days after blocking my calendar for over 7 months seems light-years from a “bird in hand” to me.

What do we think? Would you still host him if he agreed to your cancellation policy?

Edit: I cater to nomads 9 months out of the year. My listing title is “Everything nomads need and more. Free drinking H20”. I get wonderful guests, I have superhost status too.

My own personal study abroad

I am part of the Home Exchange platform and I just secured a 2 week stay in Clermont-Ferrand. I accepted it without knowing much about the area because I want to do my own little study abroad mission. My host told me the area has a rich Roman history and that is one of my biggest interests. My other interests include the Medieval era, Renaissance art, Art Nouveau/Deco, and beach towns.

Are there any towns that are worth a day-trip to?

My dates are August 9-22 flying from Los Angeles to Paris. I would then take the train to Clermont Ferrand. However, I am getting an itch to see Nice’s Roman ruins and the beach. For that, I would leave my Home Exchange on August 16, stay there 3 nights, then go to Paris.

Does this sound good or would flying to Nice before the 9th be a better option? It would be more expensive to not do a roundtrip but I also want to be efficient with travel time.

any thoughts are welcome!!

This plant

This is in Southern California where summers reach 115 and sometimes 120 degrees, with winters as cold as 40 degrees.

Sister has this plant in various spots in the ground, along with calla lilies and succulents, and has it in pots too. Neither this plant nor the callas are very green, I am thinking they need more water and it’s too hot. I know the callas are invasive in riverbeds but the succulents cannot live with a humid area with the callas. So depending on what this mystery plant is, I might need to relocate the succulent.

Is mystery plant able to thrive in this harsh weather without constant watering or should I do my sis a solid and replace it with English Garden roses? Those do well in this area.

Reasonable expectations for long-term stays

Team, I don’t know how to review a guest. I thought it would be a 5 but now I am not so sure. Please note I rented my primary residence for a month while I am unemployed and guest agreed that my personal belongings would remain, so it wasn’t a hotel situation. I ASSUMED that knowing it’s not a hotel situation, guest would clean as if they were home. Is this something I should confirm before accepting a booking?

These are the items that are pmo:

- He ruined 4 of my teflon and ceramic pans with scratches, and I have seen consensus on this channel that this is cost of doing business, but what if he ruined the Airfryer basket too? I had silicon utensils for this reason. My airfryer was spotless, I wish I could post pics

- He put wet dishes away, I don’t know how often he did that but the cast iron pan rusted away and stained the white cabinet. Who puts away wet dishes and doesnt know cast iron needs to be dried????

- The tub - lord, the tub. I have hosted for 5 years and I have never ever seen it like this. It’s literally a black ring halfway up. I don’t know how this could be accomplished, I don’t even have a stopper to bathe. I don’t think I ever got a tub nearly as dirty even when I have not cleaned it for 3 months

Reasons I hesitate:
- I wasn’t ready when he booked right after I listed. We agreed check in would be 7pm and I was still cleaning when he arrived. He seemed very understanding and even reiterated he cleans every place again because he is ocd
-He allowed me to go back in 2x to get personal items I needed
-I am unemployed and did this sublet to save money but I am not allowed

Should I say nothing and rate him a 5, say something about the air fryer and tub but rate him a 5 still, rate him a 4 and mention the items above, or not rate and ask him to replace my Air fryer basket?
