What's new in MATLAB 2026b?

The latest version of MATLAB, 2026b, was released last week and in my latest article I pick out 9 of my favorite enhancements out of the hundreds on offer. My list includes
- The MATLAB Package Manager
- An enhanced command window including Markdown Support
- A raft of performance enhancements
- A look at extensive new functionality relating to Design of Experiments (DOE)
- Plain-text file formats for live scripts and app-designer apps.
- GPU interoperability with CuPy, Tensorflow and PyTorch
- Google Sheet support

and more. I missed out all sorts of interesting things such as new algorithms for random number generation, sparse convolutions, improvements to ODE solvers including waypoint support, incremental machine learning...*hundreds* of updates.

Check out the release notes for full details but, for now, I hope you enjoy my tour over at The MATLAB Blog: https://blogs.mathworks.com/matlab/2026/10/01/a-look-at-some-of-whats-new-in-matlab-r2026b/

Generative and Agentic AI with MATLAB and Simulink for Engineering

Hi everyone

Last week, my colleagues Maria Gavilan and Kevin Cohan ran an online seminar on Generative and Agentic AI with MATLAB and Simulink. Over 7,000 people signed up! For those that missed it, the recording is here Generative and Agentic AI with MATLAB and Simulink for Engineering - MATLAB

I was there in the online chat doing my best to keep up with the 100s of questions that were coming in. One common thread of questions among attendees was around the use of local AI models with MATLAB and Simulink. It seems that, for many engineers, the only AI that they are willing to entertain is AI running on their own hardware. There are many reasons for this point of view.

Over at The MATLAB Blog, a bunch of us have been writing up our experiments with using local AI models along with MATLAB and Simulink. The latest article is from u/Creative_Sushi who has been using OpenCode with Ollama along with MATLAB and Simulink. You can read it here: Running local LLMs with MATLAB using OpenCode and Ollama on a Mac » The MATLAB Blog - MATLAB & Simulink. A couple of months ago, I did something similar using LM Studio.

We are just getting starting with these explorations and I'm really curious if any Redditors are interested in these workflows too?

Cheers,

Mike

Objects are about to get much faster in MATLAB

A simulation in using both the old and new object management systems in MATLAB. The code is identical in both cases

This is coming in MATLAB R2026b which will include a completely new object management system that is not turned on by default. When switched on, the new system promises to make object oriented MATLAB code faster without the need to change any code (most of the time). Sometimes, it will be much faster!

More details including release plans can be found over at The MATLAB Blog Objects are about to get much faster in MATLAB » The MATLAB Blog - MATLAB & Simulink
