Non-Refurb, Original Matching 1945 Soviet M44

Picked this up at the gun show in York, PA last weekend.

Non-Refurbished, original matching Soviet M44’s are pretty uncommon. This example is dated 1945 and has the early M44 features like the single ear bayonet lug, thin front sight base, and a wartime stock. All of the serial numbers are matching, and were not scrubbed and renumbered to match.

No import marks. Luckily it survived the past 81 years without being violated by bubba or bad storage conditions. I suspect that it’s a bringback. From where, I don’t know. Probably the Korean War. I guess WW2 could be possible but unlikely.

I know many collectors will deny the bringback possibility outright without papers, but I do not think the presence of bringback papers are the be-all-end all.

Either way, it is still a very uncommon example of a Soviet M44 and the price was very reasonable ($500).

Custom Copper K31 Update

Last week I posted about this custom built Copper plated Swiss K31 I bought.

It was built by gunsmith Emil Rüegg in Switzerland. He drilled & tapped the receiver, installed a heavy threaded barrel and hand made the stock.

Not everybody’s cup of tea, but I’m a glutton for Swiss firearms so I couldn’t pass it up.

Fired my first shots yesterday, took it out again today. Fired with 2016 dated GP11 surplus.

The Vector clamp-on side mount the rifle came with works but is awkward to use. Not really a fan. I have a centerline clamp-on mount from Swiss Products arriving today. My gun dealer buddy in Switzerland that had the rifle built said “centerline mounts are rubbish”, but I’m going to try it anyway.

Rifle shoots better than I can. The chinesium bipod it came with was junk and wobbles too much. The Champion bipod pictured with it is just on it so I could set it down. Mostly just shot it off a sandbag. The rifle shot great at 100 yards. Groups will probably improve once I get a better bipod. The Maryland humidity and heat weren’t helping me shoot either.

Put my LPM Anthem S2 on it. It sounds great but there is a huge Point of Impact shift when I took it off and shot without it. Not really that unexpected and I don’t plan on shooting it unsuppressed anyway.

I picked up a Refurbished Vortex Viper PST Gen II from AA Optics. I’m happy with it so far. With the side mount, the rifle doesn’t have any ejection issues luckily. They just hit the side of the mount and bounce to the left.

The W&B 12rd K31 magazine I brought back from Switzerland a couple weeks ago works great. Expensive as fuck (168CHF) but I’m glad I bought it.

Took y’all’s advice and said screw the Remington 700, ended up with something else…

I asked about a Remington 700 in a funky McMillan stock yesterday. Consensus here was to pass on it.

Earlier today, I was visiting a friend of mine who’s an importer, and he had this thing sitting around and I decided to take it home with me. He imported it from Switzerland several months ago.

It’s a Swiss K31 that was worked on by Emil Rüegg.

https://rueggwaffen.ch

He installed a custom made heavy barrel that is threaded for 5/8x24.

Drilled and tapped the action, fitted a custom made wood stock, and copper plated the barreled action. Came with some other accessories also.

I’m a Swiss Milsurp freak, and figured what the hell. It’ll be fun to play around with. It’s definitely one of a kind.

Is this Remington 700 a good deal?

Saw this used but not abused Remington 700 for sale locally for $1,100.

I’ve been looking for a decent .308 to play around with and this one seems decent. Not positive if it’s a pre-freedom group Remington.

24” Remington factory heavy barrel in .308
Appears to be threaded with a muzzle brake attached.
McMillan stock with Harris Bipod
PRI Scope Base

Bore looked spotless, didn’t see any overt issues with the rifle other than the Jerry rigged mag well screw (not sure if they lost the original and replaced it with an incorrect screw with washers)

Bolt face didn’t looked fine. It had been shot but wasn’t worn out or appeared to have any serious wear.

Is it a good deal at $1,100?

Edit: Thank you all for the information and suggestions!I’ve decided to pass on this rifle and go with a Bergara or something else.
