Kanyakubja Brahmin - Rare Image of young brahmleen shankaracharya swami swaroopanand Saraswati.

Swami shanakarcharya Maharaj was born as Shri Pothiram Upadhyay in a kanyakubja Brahmin family, who served as shankaracharya of Sharada and Jyotir Math both

Early Life & Renunciation: Born into a Kanyakubja Brahmin family, he left his home at the age of 9 in pursuit of God, adopting a life of renunciation.

Freedom Fighter: Known as a "Revolutionary Sadhu," he was imprisoned during the 1942 Quit India Movement for participating in the independence struggle, spending nine months in Varanasi and six months in Madhya Pradesh jails.

Guru and Spiritual Title: He was a direct disciple of Shankaracharya Brahmananda Saraswati of Jyotir Math (1941–1953) and later of Krishnabodha Ashrama. In 1950, he was made a Dandi Sannyasi by Brahmananda Saraswati.

Shankaracharya Status: He became the Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math, Badrinath, in 1973 and later the Shankaracharya of Dwarka Sharada Peetham.

He was known for speaking his mind, often taking stances against the worshipping of Shirdi Sai Baba as a Hindu deity, raising concerns over the composition of the Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra trust, and protesting against hydro projects on the Ganga, Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati was a major participant in the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute, often acting through the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Punuruddhar Samiti to present evidence in court. While he supported the temple's construction, his involvement was frequently at odds with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the BJP. Through his samiti, he submitted historical, Puranic, and Vastu facts to the court to argue that the site was the birthplace of Lord Ram and that a mosque had never actually existed there. In the 1990s, he helped form the Ramalaya Trust, arguing that the construction of the temple should be led by religious leaders (saints and Shankaracharyas) rather than political organisations. In February 2019, he announced a "shilanyas" (foundation stone laying) ceremony in Ayodhya, which led to the local administration imposing prohibitory orders to prevent his march.

Kanyakubja Brahman Purbi Samrath Mahendra Mishra, A freedom fighter who lay the foundation of modern Bhojpuri literature he was a legendary Bhojpuri poet, Wrestler, folk singer, composer, and freedom fighter from Chapra (Bihar)

When the British Empire ruled India through fear, chains, and gunpowder, there arose from the soil of Bihar a man whose weapon was not merely the sword, but intellect itself — Mahendar Misir, a proud Kanyakubja Brahmin whose name later became legend across the Bhojpuri land. To the world he appeared as a humble poet, singing in fairs and royal courts, but beneath the calm face burned the fire of rebellion.

While many revolutionaries searched for weapons, Mahendar Misir struck at the very veins of the British Empire — its treasury. Legend says that under the shadow of night, he secretly printed counterfeit British currency and sent it into the hands of Indian revolutionaries. Every forged note was not greed, but war. Every coin lost by the British became strength for those fighting for Bharat.

The British, proud of their power and intelligence network, could not believe that a Bhojpuri poet and Kanyakubja Brahmin from Bihar was silently shaking the foundations of the Empire itself. For months the false currency spread through markets and trade routes like invisible rebellion while colonial officers remained helpless and humiliated. The same Empire that had crushed kingdoms and armies now found itself challenged by the intellect and courage of one man.

When the British finally uncovered the operation, Mahendar Misir was arrested. But chains could imprison only his body, never his spirit. In the villages of Bihar, people did not remember him as a criminal; they remembered him as the fearless Brahmin revolutionary who turned British wealth into fuel for India’s freedom struggle.

His songs survived, his defiance survived, and his legend survived. Even today, Mahendar Misir is remembered in Bhojpuri memory not merely as a poet, but as a valiant Kanyakubja Brahmin warrior who fought the British Empire with intelligence, courage, and unbreakable pride.
