Can someone explain what this 100% rain means?

Can someone explain what this 100% rain means?

This always confuses me (and I’m Gen X so I’ve been around for a while).

When I see 100% rain in the forecast, I presume it’s going to rain for much of the day. But as you see here, it’s only going to rain for a small portion of the day.

What exactly does 100% rain mean???

What business type are we missing on Main Street that we could really use?

OK here we go. This has been a thorn in my side for quite some time. And I have lived here in Hackensack for decades.

I really like shopping in this neighborhood. I like that we have a walkable Main Street. I can hit Aldi, Lidl, get some great food, and get the occasional pedicure. But there are some businesses that are missing, and it drives me crazy.

All of Main Street is beauty salons, nail salons, barbershops, and food. Also add in a couple of smoke shops and dollar stores. That’s the entirety of Main Street.

There isn’t one single chain pharmacy anymore in the neighborhood. Rite Aid, which became Walgreens, is now gone. CVS has been gone for years. I remember being able to walk into a drugstore and just casually browse, grab a nail polish or a blush, pick up a prescription maybe. There’s no more of that.

We need at least one chain pharmacy in the neighborhood. The only CVS now is the one inside Target, and since I don’t shop there anymore, I don’t even want to go in the store. There are a few tiny pharmacies popping up that I’ve noticed. There are about three or four and they’re really small. One of them I walked into and asked if they had a portal online to login so you know you can see your prescriptions and stuff. They said not at this time. And he didn’t say it like it’s coming or they’re working on it. I can’t get with that.

We are definitely missing a butcher and a fish market. I remember growing up my mom would send me to the fish market and you would actually pick out the fish and they would cut off the heads and clean them up and fillet them for you. The only two places to get fresh 😒 fish in the general area is at the Hackensack Market, which never looks fresh, and at the Giant Farmers Market. I don’t like their fish either. I want an entirely dedicated fish market where I can go in and pick out my fish and someone goes right over to a little shelf and cleans them in front of me and everything is good and clean and wonderful.

And I feel the same about a butcher. I don’t want to be obligated to the meat that’s prepackaged at the supermarkets. I want to walk up to my butcher and tell him what I want and how thick I want the chops cut. It’s just a shame.

I would also like to see a real beauty supply place like a Sally’s. I know that there’s the one down by Home Depot, but a small one here in the neighborhood for we pedestrians would be wonderful. If I even want a decent nail file, I either have to Uber to the one down there or order on Amazon. These dollar stores just don’t do it.

Anyway, that’s my rant. What’s yours?

#What would you like to see in the neighborhood?

ALSO, do you get the Hackensack newsletter and have you ever attended any of the Townhall discussions with Mayor Gaines? I make sure I attend occasionally, and when it’s a topic I’m especially interested in and want to add my voice. They’re recorded so you can go on YouTube and see all of them. Worth subscribing.

What’s up with Emma’s on Main Street?

I am absolutely convinced that this place is a money laundering situation.

I remember years ago, sometime after the pandemic that they had a grand opening. I got stressed all cute and went and had a couple of drinks and mingled with neighbors. That was it! I have never seen it opened since.

I don’t think they’ve ever served one single meal in this place. The lights are never on, they’ve changed their name and that property would be really nice with the outdoor seating if there were a working restaurant.

USA Mid-century, possibly victorian console table?

Hi. I am in the United States.

I am in love with this table. There is only one number on it, on the bottom of the drawer; 160. It appears to be solid wood, and it's heavy. It is 29" wide, 29" tall and 27" deep.

Since it's likely older than me (and I'm Gen X) I'd like to just know approximately what it's worth before I ruin it by having it refinished and possibly painted. If it's of significant value, I definitely won't paint it. The only cleanup I've done is I wiped it down with Old English dark wood polish when I got it to conceal some of the dings.

For reference, the picture above it is 24 × 36, excluding the frame.

I've also emailed a furniture restorer in my county nearby and am awaiting his response. I'll definitely share what he says when he gets back to me. It will be fun for all of us to learn together! In fairness, I emailed him about an hour before I thought that Reddit might have a sub for these kinds of questions. Glad I found you.

I know this table is well-traveled; it's lived in several states but not sure which.

It's just so beautiful.

I'll submit other photos as requested.

Thank you so much for this informative and fun sub.

Lidl or Aldi?

I’m just curious for those who shop at both what are you noticing?

I live closer to Aldi, but I like to take a walk over to Lidl for certain things.

For instance, the produce at Aldi is better. Every time I get vegetables or fruit from Lidl I am not happy.

However, the meat at Lidl is superior to Aldi. I haven’t paid over two dollars for chicken wings since they opened. Every time they have their $1.99 sale on chicken wings I stock up.

Also, their frozen chicken wing sections are better than Aldi. I got the Kirkwood frozen chicken wing sections from Aldi and its tiny little wings like pigeons. And there were always dark spots on the wings like their second best. I just opened up a bag and threw away five sections just because they don’t look right.

But the frozen chicken wing sections at Lidl are juicy and plump and regular size. Not jumbo, but tender, normal sized chicken sections.

Lidl also has a better selection of steak. There are so many steak cuts at Lidl and compared to Aldi they are the top. Aldi has maybe a couple of cuts and not much variety. If I want a ribeye steak or New York strip steak I have to go to Lidl.

And of course, I love the bakery at Lidl. I hate Aldi bread. It just doesn’t taste right for some reason.

Also, the bacon at Aldi is better than Lidl. Lidl doesn’t carry the thick cut bacon like Aldi does. I like the peppercorn one.

I don’t mind splitting up my shopping between the two stores, but I’m very particular now on what I get at each store.

The last thing I don’t like about Lidl is that they don’t have an area near the front of the store to pack up your stuff, so people hold up the line because they have to pack it at the self checkout. Or find an empty register and use that to organize their stuff before leaving the store. I have mentioned this several times in the feedback and they really messed up with that.
