where does most of the latency hide when trading off social media posts

Trying to work out where my delay really is on x based signals and my numbers keep disagreeing with each other. For a while i only logged one timestamp, when the message hit my box, and it turns out that tells you almost nothing.

Now i log three, publish time, receive time and order out time. The publish time for x comes from the tweet id, so i don't need a separate lookup for it. First batch was useless though because my clock had drifted about 200ms, so ntp runs all the time now. I also had a feed from 1322io in the mix while testing, and a few posts showed up twice because of edits and reposts, so i dedupe on post id now. That cleaned up a lot of fake signals.

Still not sure my setup is right. I report p50, p90 and p99 instead of averages, but the tail is still noisy and i can't tell if it's the network, my own code or the exchange side.

What do you log beyond those three timestamps? And do you correct for clock offset separately or just trust ntp?

are we becoming too obsessed with being successful at a young age?

seeing people online buying houses, building companies, traveling constantly and making serious money can make an ordinary life feel like failure. the strange part is that many of us know social media only shows a small part of the picture, but it can still affect how we judge our own progress.

what does being successful actually mean to you if nobody else could see it?

when did being available all the time become normal?

between messages, emails, notifications, social media and work chats, there is always something waiting for a reply. sometimes i sit down to focus on one important task and before i know it, i have checked three different apps without even realizing it.

do you think being constantly connected is making it harder to get meaningful work done?

does anyone else feel like it is getting harder to focus on building a life when there is so much pressure to keep up?

everywhere you look, someone is learning a new skill, starting a business, getting promoted, making money online, or completely changing their life. even when you know you should focus on your own path, seeing all of it every day can make your own progress feel slow.

how do you stay focused on what actually matters to you without constantly feeling like you are falling behind?

what is one small change you made to your daily routine that ended up having a bigger effect than you expected?

for me, it was stopping work at a fixed time instead of trying to squeeze in one more task every evening. i thought working longer would help me get more done, but having a clear stopping point actually made the next day easier. has a small change like that worked for you?
