Over the past year, I have been putting together a brown-water union navy impression to reenact and do historical education. One thing I have been stumped on, is what musket/conversion/or rifle should I be looking to get? I understand that there wasn’t a lot of standardization amongst naval ships when it came to long guns on ships in blockading squadrons much less on the rivers. I have seen people mention the use of 1853 Enfields, 1861 Whitney Plymouth Rifles, to more common Springfield variants. There probably isn’t a perfect answer but if anyone could point me in the direction of what would make sense for someone looking to portray navy life on a river ironclad from 1862-1864 that would be great.
