hosta Godzilla

As it’s quickly approaching 3’x6’ it’s now larger than the OS mother plant ever got at Wade&Gatton. Nice unknown size territory to be in. While it’s gray at moment it’ll probably be an army green the rest of the season when this weeks rains are finished.

I can barely tell I had freeze damage 3 weeks ago.

This bed is mostly sun loving Plantaginea varieties. When the temperature hits 85 they usually start thriving. They are the best hosta for the southern states. I’ve got a vacant lot next door and have to trim the fence line every summer. In the spring though it gives me some incredible looking backdrops.

I was finding HVX everywhere today

Stopped at two places. Found it at both. This was at a big box store that starts with the letter after k. I informed the garden center people. They had never heard of it.

Atlantis

Only a second year garden plant but it 3-4 mature eye division I planted last summer. Definitely a good growing hosta. I’ve seen a few large ones that drape on the ground and look great.

Manure and cap day

Chips manure chips. Next spring I’ll try to remember to add triple 10 and biochar before I fork till and add another thin chip topping. When it eventually gets done rotting in 4-5 years it’ll be roughly 6-8 inches of rich dark soil. Many ways to make Hosta beds but this is really successful for me on top of clay. With soil added to a planting hole I can begin planting a year from now.

Hosta and fern moving season.

Moved about 10 Hosta and ferns from this overcrowded bed last fall. Looks like I’m going to be doing it again. Exactly why I’m enlarging beds and thankfully I’ve got that much shade.

Brunnera

Work well with Hosta and while a perennial will readily seed and cross pollinate. Usually find a few seedlings with unique patterns every year.

bed expansion for next year

Roughly double this beds size after I move the iris and resurrection lilies. I put a layer of mulch, layer of horse manure and finally another capping layer of mulch chips. Let it sit fallow for a year and then start planting with added soil for each plant. By two years in with fungi and worms doing there thing it’s rich black soil.

3 yr old Above the Clouds

Should end up roughly twice this size in height, width and leaf size. Definitely a different looking blue cupped hosta.

False Solomon Seal

Maianthemum racemosum. Native to most of North America. Seeds itself in my beds from the woods. It gets red berries late summer and fall. Taller than most Hosta so it just archs over them.

For any Harry Potter fans this one is Hogwarts

It was in a tissue culture liner last spring so evidently a good growing hosta. Really like the dark green and pebbly leaf texture. Very thick leaves might be a tetraploid.

Brutus

A young second year plant. Will eventually look like a truly gigantic Diamond Lake.

Unknown

This one is a mystery to me. Pale yellow on pale green. Gets even paler as summer lingers on. I’ve had it a decade plus and it’s most likely a very uncommon Hosta. 2’ x 4’ mature, leaves 13” x 8”. like everything else about this Hosta flowers a pale lavender. Guesses welcome.

Not a fan of its color this year. Usually almost an emerald green. Been a very odd spring though.

If It hadn’t made a bunch of noise before falling it would have gotten me. lol. Wouldn’t have hurt but still going to have to wear a hard hat in the Hosta beds.

This is a fun little Hosta starting its 3rd year. Grows extremely tight.

Took a bit of damage to my lowest lying plants elevation wise. Better than it could have been. It’s kind of neat to zoom in on the first photo. The freeze patterns really resemble snowflakes which I guess they should.

Posting for posterity. They may be on the ground this time tomorrow if we truly get a freeze.
