NixOS vs Fedora Bootc: Which Offers More Control?

I’m thinking about switching my personal desktop from Windows to Linux. I already use Ubuntu at work, and while I keep putting off the switch because I’m too lazy to back up my files, I’ve been testing distros like Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora in virtual machines.

I use a laptop with an Intel i5-12450H, an RTX 3050, and hybrid graphics. I’m looking for a Linux distro with good NVIDIA and Secure Boot support for web browsing, gaming on Steam, and programming.

Beyond these requirements, I want more control over installed and removed packages, so I can keep track of what’s on my system and avoid dependency issues and conflicts, which I often run into in my work environment.

Based on these requirements, I’m torn between NixOS and Fedora Bootc, including Universal Blue images, and I’d like to hear from people who have used either option.

For those using NixOS, how has your experience been? If you switched to another distro, what made you switch?

And for those who have used Fedora Bootc or Universal Blue, how was your experience? If you eventually switched to something else, why?

Why the resistance?

I'm learning WSL2 and I'd like to understand why many developers criticize the idea of using Windows solely as a lean host, keeping only what's necessary installed on it, while using WSL2 with the VS Code WSL Remote extension (installed on the host) to run tools such as .NET, Git, Podman, etc., without having to install them directly on Windows.

Recently, I made a post about .NET and received a lot of negative responses, mainly arguing that this approach adds “unnecessary extra overhead.”

Who is MicroOS intended for?

I've been migrating to Linux for about a month now, but for the time being, I'm just experimenting with and getting familiar with different distributions through a virtual machine. So far, I've tried everything from Ubuntu and its derivatives to Arch.

My laptop has an Intel Core i5-12450H and an RTX 3050. I'm looking for a distribution with good NVIDIA driver support, Secure Boot support, and up-to-date packages, and so far, OpenSUSE has been the one that best meets these requirements.

I'm considering trying MicroOS, installing only what's necessary on the base system and using Flatpak and Distrobox for everything else.

For someone who's just getting started with Linux and wants to build and customize their own system, what advice would you give?

Is NixOS for me?

Since the beginning of the year, I’ve been trying out different Linux distributions, looking for one that suits me without having to constantly switch between them. After trying Ubuntu and its derivatives, I settled on Fedora Atomic and really liked the approach.

However, I noticed some limitations and felt that the system includes components and configurations that I don’t always want to keep, which gives me less control over the installation. I looked into alternatives such as rpm-ostree, BlueBuild, and automation scripts, but none of them fully met my needs.

Later, I came across Arch, but I found its approach somewhat complicated, since pretty much everything has to be configured from scratch. This also led to some difficulties with hardware and drivers. I tested it in a VM and even had trouble figuring out the proper configuration for audio and Wi-Fi.

That’s when I discovered NixOS, and I really liked its declarative approach. I like being able to describe pretty much the entire system through configuration and, compared to Arch, having hardware support more clearly defined from the start. I also really value the transparency of knowing exactly what is installed on the system.

On the other hand, I still have some questions about Secure Boot and NVIDIA support. For those of you who use NixOS, how do you usually set up Secure Boot? Between Limine and Lanzaboote, which one do you prefer, and why? And for those using a newer NVIDIA GPU, what has your experience been like with the drivers, especially for gaming on Steam?
