Run By of My Santa Fe Super Chief

This is my Lionel Super Chief with 8 15 inch passenger cars to handle my 036 curves, new from 2002-03 and the TMCC F7 engines new from 2006. Lionel's new Super Chief Super set from the 2025 catalog has been shipped with 3 Legacy powered engines plus a Super Bass B, along with 8 21 inch passenger cars, some with sounds, for a super price of around $4,500 for the set. I think I’ll settle for this humble set from 20 years ago for a fraction of that price point, thank you.

Lionel Yellowstone Special

Here’s one of my passenger trains, Union Pacific’s Yellowstone Special, which was a summer only train that ran from Salt Lake City, UT, to West Yellowstone, MT, the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It was discontinued in 1960, after running since 1908. This is a fairly accurate version of it in its final years, with powered Lionel Legacy F7 A and B units pulling 10 cars. It was a night train with mostly Pullmans and no dome car.

My Workhorse Santa Fe Freight Movers

These two Lionel EMD Geeps work my small freight yard. The lead engine has Santa Fe’s traditional blue and yellow colors for freight. The trailing engine is unpowered and has the “Kodachrome” merger livery from the mid-1980s. But when the Interstate Commerce Commission rejected Santa Fe’s proposed merger with the Southern Pacific in 1986, the SP was painted out, leaving just SF. So a lot of engines ended up with this unusual livery.

My Favorite Postwar Steam Locomotive

From my first Lionel train set Santa brought for Christmas, 1955. It still runs very well and the 2037 was the most-produced Lionel postwar steamer.
