Cash vs Card Amounts; How Much Money Should I Transfer and How Much Cash Should I bring?

I am two weeks away from my first trip to China! After asking around, I believe getting a WISE app and card might be the way to go. Now I would like to transfer money to my accounts.

How much money should I transfer to safely accommodate 3 days in Zhangjiajie, 1 day in Wulong, and 3 days in Chongqing?

How much physical cash should I bring with me to convert to yuan while in China?

Thank you very much!

Making Sure I Have Everything for My First Trip to Japan; Am I Missing Anything?

My first trip to Japan is coming up really soon! I will be visiting China, Korea, and Japan in the month of September. I'll be in Japan from September 14th to September 27th. I'll be arriving in Japan after spending one week in China and one week in Korea. My trip will include Miyakojima (although I might change this before I depart due to weather), Hita, Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo.

I am very excited and I think I have almost everything ready, but I want to know I am not missing anything. If anyone take a look at my list of things I have ready and make any suggestions on what is missing or additional things I should get, I would greatly appreciate it!

The things I already have:

Documentation:

  • Passport w/Japanese visa stamped
  • Departure Plane ticket confirmation
  • Hotel reservations

Clothing:

  • Walking shoes
  • Hiking Pants
  • Bucket hat
  • UPF shirts
  • Sunglasses
  • Cross shoulder bag for carrying documents
  • Linin/cotton shirts and pants
  • Swim wear

Lodging:

  • Hotel w/washing and drying machines and luggage storage

Apps:

  • Trip.com
  • Klook.com
  • KULI KULI - need to set up
  • go - need to set up
  • Suica - need to figure out how to set up
  • Tableog

Things I need to get:

Things I need to get:

  • VPN - I don't know if I need this
  • eSIM - I don't know if an eSIM replaces a VPN or if I should get both or just the eSIM. Also, I don't know which eSIM to get
  • Better translating app - I know I can use google translate, and other sites have suggested Papago, but I'd like to know if there is a better, more accurate, and free translating app that I should use
  • Additional booking apps - Not sure if I need additional apps to book entries into the national parks I am visiting.
  • UPF hat
  • Breathable weather appropriate undershirt/underwear/socks

Things I need to do:

  • Set up apps
  • Download any additional apps suggested
  • Fill out customs forms before my trip
  • Buy anything else suggested that I might need.

Please let me know if there is anything I should prepare before my trip. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Traveling to 3 Countries Starting in China; Are There ESIMS That Can Work In Different Countries?

I am traveling to China, South Korea, and Japan next month. I'll be in each country for about 10 days each. Do have to purchase an ESim for each country or is it possible to get a safe, reliable esim that can work in China, Korea, and Japan?

What are some recommendable esims. I've seen a couple on this subreddit but I haven't read about anyone that is country hopping like me. If I have to buy an esim in each country, what are the best esims I can us in China?

Thanks everyone!

Packing Multiple Outfits vs Buying What I Need During My Trip

I'm going to be visiting Japan for two weeks in September. This will be the last portion of my trip as I will be starting my trip on September 2nd in China for a week, then South Korea for a week, before ending my trip with two weeks in Japan at the end of September.

Because I am visiting different climate zones over the span of a month, I am wondering if it would be wiser to buy what I need in each country. In China, I will be visiting the mountains in Zhangjiajie, in Korea I am visiting Seoul, and in Japan I'll be starting in Okinawa and making my way to Tokyo.

I've comfortably lived out of a large duffle bag for two weeks in hot Mexican climate, but this trip will be for four weeks and it will be a lot of traveling in between locations during what I believe is Typhoon Season.

Would I be better off starting my trip with few clothes and buying what I need as I make my way to Korea and Japan? Or would this be too much of a hassel and more expensive? Is the extra expense worth it?

Thanks!

Booking a Hotel in Nikko vs Making it a Day Trip

I am booking my last two hotels of my first Japan trip. I really wanted to see Nikko for their UNESCO sites, but after looking at hotels, the prices are double or even triple what some hotels cost in Tokyo. I was wondering if it would be an good idea to make Nikko a day trip instead of a designated place to stay during the end of my trip.

Thanks.

Renting a car in Miyakojima Island vs Taxi Service

I am planning on starting my Japan trip in Miyakojima island before heading into the mainland. I would be arriving in the evening; around 6pm. Should I rent a vehicle to get around the island or is there a reliable taxi or ride share service on the island? I won't be staying in a resort so I can't count on a hotel shuttle service to get me to and from the airport.

Thank you!

Is it possible to enjoy the night scene in Japan if I no longer drink Alcohol?

Long story short, I no longer partake in alcohol for medical reasons and also I'm a recovering alcoholic. I see so many videos of really cool speakeasies and bars in Tokyo and Osaka but I am not sure if these places offer mocktails since I can't understand the menus yet (I'm working on it). I don't to be that person that walks into a bar and orders a straight coke like a jackass but I also don't want to risk offending an establishment if I have to leave without buying anything either.

Are there any alternatives for a fun night in Tokyo that doesn't include alcohol or should I skip city nightlife entirely?

Has Anyone Used VisaMailServiceVMS as a Visa Survice?

I am trying to apply for a Chinese Tourist Visa for a September trip. Unfortunately, I cannot make the drive all the way down to San Francisco, so I would need to use a Visa Service to get my passport stamped.

A lot of people have used different services. I asked ChatGPT about finding a reputable service, and it suggested Visa Mail Service VMS (www.visamailservice.com) for me since I am a first-time applicant.

Has anyone used this service, or can anyone suggest a service I can use so that I can get my visa approved and my passport back before I leave at the end of August?

Thanks.

Visiting my LD GF in Kelowna; How Busy is The Border at Osooyos?

I live in Washington and I'm visiting my GF in Canada next weekend. I don't mind if it takes a while to cross the border into Canada on friday, but I need to get back home Sunday because I work Monday morning.

How congested/difficult is the border crossing back into Washington from Osooyos?

Does This Mean it's Time to Submit My Passport?

I've been checking my tourist visa application status periodically. The site has 5 status updates:

  1. To be paid
  2. Feedback from Preliminary Review
  3. Passport to be submitted
  4. Passport to be collected
  5. Finished

Only the first two have been checked off, and there is a note that says "Preliminary review is in progress" since 6/15/26.

Is it now time to submit my physical passport?

Thanks!

Accidently Mixed Up My Parents' Names on My Application; Now it's Under Preliminary Review and I Can't Pull it Back

As the title says, I accidently put my parents' family name under their given name and their given name under their family name. I only just noticed it right now but the website no longer gives me the option to cancel or restart my application.

My review is in progress. How badly will this affect my application?

What do I list for section 6.2: Inviting person/contact or organization in China?

What do I list for section 6.2: "Inviting person/contact or organization in China" if nobody invited me?

I selected "Not Applicable," but it asks me to PLEASE SPECIFY. Do I just say I am visiting for tourism?

I am a US citizen if that matters.

Do I have to be accurate with employment dates when I apply

US Citizen here.

Do I need to provide exact dates of employment in my Visa application or can I ball park it?

Thanks!
