[OoT] I’m building a Twitch Plays version of Ocarina of Time
I’ve been working on a fun side project: a Twitch Plays setup for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, built around the N64 version of the game.
The idea is simple: Twitch chat controls Link.
Viewers can type commands to move, attack, interact, use C-buttons, roll, target, sidehop, backflip, and trigger some more advanced movement-style inputs. I’ve also been experimenting with combo commands so chat isn’t limited to one button press at a time. The goal is to make it feel chaotic, but still playable enough that progress is actually possible.
I’m trying to keep the experience close to how OOT actually plays on N64, so commands are designed around real game behavior instead of generic “up/down/jump” style controls. For example, there’s no normal jump button in OOT, so movement commands have to account for how Link actually moves, rolls, targets, and interacts with the world.
A few things I’ve been working on:
- Chat-based movement and button inputs
- Combo commands for common actions
- Targeting, rolling, sidehops, backflips, and interaction commands
- Basic status text for when I’m awake/asleep/away
- Suggestion logging so viewers can recommend fixes or new commands
- A setup that can eventually run more hands-off for longer streams
I’m not trying to make this a polished speedrun tool or anything like that, it’s more of a chaotic community experiment to see how far chat can get through Ocarina of Time when everyone has to coordinate through commands. We’ve gotten halfway through the Deku Tree in a couple of days!
I’m still tuning the command list and figuring out what makes the game fun to watch without making it impossible to play. If anyone has experience with Twitch Plays projects, OOT mechanics, or just ideas for viewer-friendly commands, I’d love to hear what you think.
I’ll be testing it live on Twitch under the same name as my profile if anyone wants to see how it works in action, but mostly I’m looking for feedback on the concept and what kinds of commands would make the experience better.
Note: I do not condone piracy and will not provide advice on obtaining the game illegally; please only use legitimate copies of the game.
