Van Der Graaf Generator

I've seen numerous mentions of VDGG around here, so I gave them a listen. I let Spotify choose which ones.

So far - Meh ...

VDGG gives me the same vibe as Marillion. An overly theatric attempt to tell a story. Something I probably wouldn't turn off, but not something I would choose.

Is there a sub-genre Glam Prog that they fit into?

Hardware swap

In a space constrained lab, I need to replace all of my hosts at once.

Environment:
Backend storage, using NFS
2 vCenters, v8.03, ELM
No vSAN, no NSX
vDS
Host Management and vMotion ports are on vSS

Process:
As I shut down VMs - Remove from Inventory
Remove hosts and clusters until I'm down to one host with the two vCenters as guests.
Shut them down.

>swap hardware, cable up, power up<

1st ESX host:
Attach to storage
Register vCenter VMs
vCenter NICs are currently on vDS
Do I set up a temp vSS to put the vCenters on?
Add 1st host to vCenter (so I can vMotion it later)
Add rest of hosts to vCenter, clustered, with vDS

vMotion vCenters from stand-alone host with vSS to cluster with vDS.

Register VMs and off I go!

Any Gotcha's?
Anything I'm not thinking of or overlooking?

Thanks

VVF 8 -> Greenfield VVF 9

Currently VVF 8.03. No vSAN, No NSX.

If I stood up a new vCenter 9/Aria Ops and built a new cluster, can I vmotion VMs from the 8x environment to the new 9x ?

Not sure how the mechanics are affected without ELM.

Can the back end storage be shared so I don't have to do a Storage vMotion?

I have to rebuild the clusters anyways to move from Baseline to Image-based LCM.

I am not planning on going whole hog VCF 9.

Synergy uplink port statistics

I'd like to chart the usage stats of the uplink ports on our Synergy frames. And have it a little more useful than clicking through OneView selections.

AI suggested using Grafana and Prometheus and polling via REST API .. or something like that.

I got the Grafana and Prometheus dockers up and running. And there was some kind of Python collector out there to get some stats - and they do show up in Grafana.

But I'm having a hard time getting the collector.py formatted and syntax'd correctly for the uplink ports.

Is there another collector built for Synergy?

Or any other suggestions?

Site Recovery Manager

We are still 8.x VVF. No vSAN, no NSX, but we do have two vCenters in ELM and SRM for recovery.

We protect and recover only the VMs supporting our Production environment. We use stretched layer-2 so IPs do not have to change. Storage array-based replication. It has been fairly straightforward and reliable.

Now SRM has been re-renamed to "VCF Protection and Recovery"

Starting to find some docs on that. Am I understanding it correctly that we need the full VCF stack at both the protected and recovery sites?

What is the minimum viable footprint for a protected and recovery site for SRM?

VVF8 to VCF9 and leave-behinds

OK, I drank the Kool-Aid. I'll be moving to VCF9.x

But, I have a number of Nutanix clusters running ESX that are not ready to move to vCenter9.
I know I can roll from ESX to AHV, but that's not happening, and that's not the question.

Do I stand up another VVF8 vCenter and move the clusters there? - and subsequently upgrade the rest of the current VVF8 vCenter/clusters to VCF9.
And/or as an afterthought, can the new vCenter8 be managed by VCF9 for an extended period of time?

Or do I get my VCF9 overhead management domain and workload domains established and move the other clusters into VCF9? thereby leaving my current vCenter 8 and a few clusters behind.

Yes, I've seen and heard all the chatter about VVF licensing going away (or is it?)

I'm still struggling with the massive overhead VCF requires to go "Full Stack" with the management domain.

What if I wanted to keep my VVF footprint the same and move to "whatever whatever 9"

I have 2 vCenters in ELM, one at Primary site, and one at Recovery site. We use SRM for BC/DR with Array-based replication. And I have now stood up Aria Ops. We use vDS for data, and standard vSwitches for management. FC to back-end storage.

No NSX, no vSAN, no orchestrations, no cloud, no containers. Mostly Windows VMs

Can this configuration be upgraded to v9 as-is without the "Full Stack" overhead?

What happens to communications between vCenters for SRM without ELM?
