irishtimes.comFirst Round Big Board (with explanations)
Second year doing this, last year’s board for reference - https://www.reddit.com/r/NBA_Draft/comments/1lgeone/first_round_big_board_with_explanations/
I’ll do a brief overview below, happy to defend/debate any individual element of the board in the comments. The comps aren't always the exact physical profile, they more reflect play style and overall impact
Tier 1
AJ and Peterson are both special offensive players who might average 30+ ppg in their primes, and I think they’ll both settle in as perfectly capable defenders. Peterson is first for me because of the versatility of the ways he can succeed, and schemes he could enable.
Tier 2
Boozer lacks the high-end outcome of Tier 1 because I don’t quite see how he becomes ‘undeniable’ on offense, and might create some problems on the defensive end that hinder his team’s success. But he has fewer questions than anyone below him so he’s in this tier by himself.
Tier 3
Here I’m valuing elite two-way players who could play big minutes deep into the playoffs.
Brown for me is the best of the guards of this class – all around package of shooting, size, handles, finishing, finishing, passing and athleticism. All the rest of the guards are lacking at least one of these. He needs to improve his decision-making but that seems very fixable at an NBA level to me.
Morez at 6 – he’s got the measurements of Bam Adebayo so there’s no reason he can’t be a 5 in my mind.
Yaxel and Burries at 7 and 9, because I believe multi-skilled two-way players with outlier positional size or strength are insanely valuable in a deep playoff run. They might not have gaudy stats to start their career but I think in hindsight the consensus will be that they contribute more to championship equity than the guys below them.
Wagler at 11 because I have questions about how tight his handle is, and how consistently he gets to the rim in the NBA.
Acuff at 12 because an offensive-minded guard who needs the ball and doesn’t do any of the little things isn’t as valuable to me as the two-way guys above him.
Tier 4
I could see these guys starting due to elite skills in at least one area, or development upside, but for each of them think it’s more likely they wind up coming off the bench. Ament comes in at 19 because I don’t currently see how he creates an advantage in the NBA, but eventually you have to make the upside pick.
Tier 5
Draft really falls off here for me, and these guys didn’t get as deep of a scout. You can squint and see the outline of a role player in these guys, but there’s every chance they don’t develop sufficiently and are out of the league within a couple of years. The comp here is the player they’ll resemble if they succeed, but I’m not necessarily confident they will in fact succeed. Seems like I’m way higher than consensus on Seth Trimble, but I look around the league and see a lot of small defensive demons with shaky shots, and I don’t see why a team wouldn’t pick him up to harass an opposing PG for 20 minutes a game.

progressireland.substack.comWorking abroad (UK) for short periods?
Anyone had any experience with working abroad for short stints (a few days at a time), or know if it's permitted?

Would be mainly looking at the UK, as I've quite a few friends over there and would make it much easier to visit if I could work over there eg on a Friday/Monday, and not have to take the AL to make it a long weekend.

Would imagine the obvious issue might be any security concerns, but anyone familiar with what the rules are around this? Any blanket rules or just Dept specific?

Surprised no-one has made the case for this yet (or maybe I missed it). For me this has been the most fun a first round has been in years. There have been more games played (only 2 series have been less than 6 games), 3 game 7's, and 2 teams have already clinched a series upset by beating a higher seed with 2 more at risk in the Cavs and Pistons.
Tanking and the regular season issues took up a lot of the discourse down the stretch, but judging by the first round the playoffs product is shaping up to be as good as ever.
