12yr Old - 13U / 2027 Season / Bat Sizing (USSSA)

Hey Guys,

My son will be playing 13u next summer ('27) and he's currently 4'10 1/2", and about 85lbs.

(Note - For OBA (Ontario Baseball Association) 13u, up to drop 10 is allowed. For 14u & 15u it goes to drop 5 or less.)

He turned 12 at the end of August.

He's a lead off hitter with some pop & crazy speed. He's all lean muscle.

He swung 2 bats this season, the 29" -10 2025 Icon & a 30" -10 2026 Supra.

He trained with the Supra all last winter & ended up using the Icon in most games.

Now he won't touch the Icon, & is training with the Supra. (Listing the Icon on Marketplace today ..lol)

I grabbed him a 31" -10 2027 Easton Hype Fire this weekend, and now I'm wondering if I should have stayed at the 30" sizing and gone with a -10 or -8.

The season starts in 8mths, and he usually grows 2.5"-3.5" during this window. Thinking he will be approx. 5'0 to 5'1" by the start of the season, with a few more lbs.

The thought process was that he will have to go with a -5 in 2028, so wanted to get him use to a heavier bat, with better plate coverage.

He will start S&C training today for the next 24 weeks, in addition to his winter team training Dec-April. This is to help build up his core, arms, shoulders, legs, and overall strength to hopefully guard against future injuries. (We had a shoulder growth plate injury in mid June this year from pitching over use, and he didn't throw the rest of the season. He DH & pinch run for the remainder of the season)

Any thoughts on the new bat sizing?

Cheers!
