I walked past Omakase Shihou today at 1586 Second Avenue (corner of 82nd) and noticed the signage was out of the window box in front.
A couple of calls to them went to a voice mail with no message. They then returned my call and said the location was closed and recommended their location at 988 Second Ave, 2nd floor, bet 52nd and 53rd.
Shihou is next door to Sushi Ren, who has closed as well although is still taking delivery orders. They are reportedly looking for a new location.
Dorrian's Red Hand (1616 Second Ave, corner of 84th), always known as simply Dorrian’s, a neighborhood fixture since 1960 is putting the finishing touches on their new and expanded outdoor seating.
Salvo’s Pizzabar (1477 York Avenue, corner of 78th) is closed for vacation until August 20th. The paper up on the windows suggests perhaps some renovations are being done as well.
What’s interesting about this corner spot is that a pizza parlor has occupied it under various owners since I went there as a child in the 1970’s. Back then it was a spot called Little Robin’s.
Doughnut Plant is opening at 1285 First Avenue (between 69th and 70th streets).
I don’t know what’s going into the former Moduwa York 84 Bagels & Deli space but I’ve noticed daily work being done in it.

I peaked into the window today of the long (long) awaited H Mart at 223 East 86th St.
There does appear to be progress being made on the interior buildout.
The 8,500-square-foot space was purchased towards the end of 2022.
I walked past this today, it was my first time seeing it.
Mr. Magu, a juice stand located on Second Ave bet. 79th & 80th, east side of the street.
“Le Petit Parisien has closed its shop at 355 East 78th Street, between First and Second avenues, taking Supper Club by Le Petit Parisien down with it.”
I went back for a second morning in a row today to grab a cup of coffee and a Za’atar pita at LB Coffee (454 East 84th St., off York Ave).
The pita is simple, but it’s a good quality dough and the Za’atar used is a good blend. Za’atar varies in quality and by region , if you’ve never been to Kalustyan’s at 123 Lex for spices, you should go. They carry a variety of Za’atar.
I drink my coffee black and get the drip at LB. It’s a medium to dark roast, which I prefer to, say, a lighter roast like the one at Green Lane (1582 1st).
For a neighborhood that was once a coffee desert, with the exception of Oren’s, whose little spot remains unused after closing 6 years ago, we now have a variety of coffee options for all kinds of tastes.
