Customer Feedback
Why do restaurant staff members ask how everything was when they clearly don't want to hear the answer? Several years ago, I ate at a Turkish restaurant in London. I was completely unfamiliar with Turkish cuisine and wasn't sure what to expect. When asked, I simply said that I thought the lamb would be spicier. That's all, just spicier, not bad in any way. Well, the server became very indignant and replied snottily that everyone else likes it, and she proceeded to treat me like a bad smell after that. Weird!
Several months ago, I ate at a local restaurant and ordered the Gyro platter that consisted of meat, Feta cheese, and Kalamata olives. When asked by the server, I said the combination was very salty, only to be told that she likes it that way. The woman at the cash register (owner? manager?) again asked, and I proffered the same comment. She said something to the effect that, but that's good, right? Um — no.
Then last night, I ordered the Gyro platter at a different restaurant. This time, it arrived with enormous cubes of meat, making it impossible to fit inside the pita bread. I mentioned it to the waitress who said nothing. I then explained to the cashier-owner how the dish would be much easier to eat if the meat was shaved or sliced. Her only reply was that they'd always done it that way. I give up!
So why do these people bother to ask? If I ran a restaurant, I would see these comments, delivered respectfully, as valuable feedback they could use to improve, instead of taking anything even slightly negative as a personal affront. From now on, I'll just say everything was fine and find somewhere else to eat if I'm not satisfied. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.
