Customer Feedback

Why do restaurant staff members ask how everything was when they clearly don't want to hear the answer? Several years ago, I ate at a Turkish restaurant in London. I was completely unfamiliar with Turkish cuisine and wasn't sure what to expect. When asked, I simply said that I thought the lamb would be spicier. That's all, just spicier, not bad in any way. Well, the server became very indignant and replied snottily that everyone else likes it, and she proceeded to treat me like a bad smell after that. Weird!

Several months ago, I ate at a local restaurant and ordered the Gyro platter that consisted of meat, Feta cheese, and Kalamata olives. When asked by the server, I said the combination was very salty, only to be told that she likes it that way. The woman at the cash register (owner? manager?) again asked, and I proffered the same comment. She said something to the effect that, but that's good, right? Um — no.

Then last night, I ordered the Gyro platter at a different restaurant. This time, it arrived with enormous cubes of meat, making it impossible to fit inside the pita bread. I mentioned it to the waitress who said nothing. I then explained to the cashier-owner how the dish would be much easier to eat if the meat was shaved or sliced. Her only reply was that they'd always done it that way. I give up!

So why do these people bother to ask? If I ran a restaurant, I would see these comments, delivered respectfully, as valuable feedback they could use to improve, instead of taking anything even slightly negative as a personal affront. From now on, I'll just say everything was fine and find somewhere else to eat if I'm not satisfied. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

Barry and Michael Jackson

I just learned that Michael Jackson's younger "son" whom he always referred to for some reason as Blanket is really named Bigi (pronounced Bee Gee, according to Google). I know that Michael and Barry were close friends in Miami for a while and that Michael was the godfather of Barry's son, also named Michael. Was Bigi named after Barry Gibb or the group itself, or am I reading too much into this? Does anyone know?

What Wood Is This?

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but maybe someone here can help me. I'm trying to identify the wood used for the veneer of a Lane cedar-lined chest I got new in the 70s. The company is out of business, so I can't contact them. The actual color is a little warmer than it appears below. Is it oak, by any chance?

Late to the Party

I'm so glad this subreddit is still active. I've just started streaming this series in the last week or so, and am really enjoying it. I have a question about the episode when Peggy invited Dawn home to spend the night. There was a scene where they showed a green purse sitting on the coffee table, which seemed to make both women uncomfortable. What was that all about? I must have missed something, because I don't understand the significance. I know that Dawn left early, too. Can anyone explain?

This Is Driving Me Crazy

I have a small lamp on an entryway table, and the nearest plug is a couple of feet away behind the dining room drapes. So how do I hide the cord? It looks terrible right now. I tried thumb tacks in the inside corners, but there must be metal there because they wouldn't go in. I also tried tape, but it didn't hold. I don't know what to do because I can't live with this.

Ruth McCartney

I read that Ruth McCartney and her elderly mother, Angela, have had no contact with Paul since his father's death in 1976. Supposedly Paul, who had been supporting the family, cut them off abruptly without a dime. The two were then forced to sell off some of his personal effects just to make ends meet which justly infuriated him. They also claim that they caught Linda snooping through Angela's private journals. Is all this true? While Paul was certainly under no legal obligation to continue his support, it seems unnecessarily petty and disrespectful to his late father's memory. Remember, Jim adopted Ruth, his wife's daughter by her former husband, the same way that Paul later adopted Linda's daughter, Heather. Therefore, Ruth was legally his half-sister, not simply his step-sister. Jim must have loved both her and her mother and would be undoubtedly saddened by his son's treatment of them. Happily, Ruth now owns a successful business and no longer harbors any ill-will toward Paul. If true, this story doesn't paint Paul in the best light, I'm sorry to say.

% Games and Out

I wish they would go back to the old rule where contestants would be done after winning five games. It would give more people a chance to compete, and personally, I get sick of seeing the same faces day after day.

Barry's Solo Career

If Now Voyager had been commercially successful or if the label had been willing to bankroll a second album, would Barry have gone on to become a solo act? Would he still have recorded and performed occasionally with his brothers, or would he have completely broken with them? I know Robin also released three albums about the same time. While it was clear he was trying to escape his big brother's shadow, he seemed to want to continue with the Bee Gees, at least after Maurice died. Had he been planning to bolt earlier, or was he just trying to be "heard?"

The Valentine's Trip to Switzerland

This episode really bugs me because it doesn't make any sense. Sheldon wants to visit the Large Hadron Collider, and Penny couldn't care less. Wouldn't the obvious solution be to bring them both to Switzerland? Sheldon could book his own trip and accompany Leonard to CERN, while Penny and Leonard spend the rest of the trip together. Easy peasy! And these guys are geniuses???

Strange Comment from Barry

Upon rewatching the How Can You Mend a Broken Heart documentary again last night, something strange jumped out at me that didn't register the first time. At the beginning, when Barry is looking out onto the bay, he comments that all of his immediate family are gone, ALL of them, and he's the last one left. I know he has an older sister who is still alive, so why would he say that? While she may not be involved in show business, she still exists, for heaven's sake. Weird comment to make!
