Did bunion surgery improve your chronic foot pain?

For anyone who had invasive bunion surgery, did it provide lasting pain relief? Or did the surgery and recovery create additional problems?

How long did you ignore your bunion before getting it checked?

I’m curious how long people waited before seeing a podiatrist. Did your bunion stay the same for years, or did it get noticeably worse? Looking back, would you have done anything differently?

Question for patients with bunions: When is your pain at its worst?

I’m curious whether most people notice symptoms:
After long periods of walking
At the end of the workday
At night while resting
First thing in the morning
I’d appreciate hearing when your symptoms are most noticeable and what seems to make them better or worse.

Looking for patient recommendations: What shoes have helped your bunion pain the most?

I routinely discuss footwear with patients, but I’m always curious what people have found helpful in everyday life.
Are there any brands or models that have genuinely reduced discomfort?
I’m interested in hearing real-world experiences.

As a foot surgeon, I’m curious—what was the hardest part of your bunion surgery recovery?

I’m always interested in hearing directly from patients about their recovery experiences. While every procedure and recovery is different, I think there’s a lot clinicians can learn from real-world feedback.
If you’ve had bunion surgery:
What surprised you most during recovery?
What do you wish your surgeon had prepared you for?
What advice would you give someone considering surgery?
I’d love to hear your experiences.

What made you choose your bunion surgeon?

If you’ve had bunion surgery, what was the biggest factor in choosing your surgeon?
Was it:
Experience with bunion surgery?
Before-and-after results?
Reviews from other patients?
Recommendation from another doctor?
Minimally invasive vs. traditional surgery?
Recovery time?
Looking back, is there anything you wish you had asked during your consultation or anything you overlooked when making your decision?
I’m interested in hearing real experiences because choosing the right surgeon seems like one of the biggest decisions in the whole process.

Why is one bunion always worse than the other?

I recently learned that it’s actually pretty common for one bunion to become much larger or more painful than the other. Things like favoring one leg, previous injuries, slight differences in leg length, or even differences in foot mechanics can cause one side to progress faster.
I’m curious about everyone else’s experience:
Is one of your bunions significantly bigger than the other?
Does the bigger one hurt more, or is the smaller one actually more painful?
Did your podiatrist ever explain why one side got worse?
If you had surgery, did you correct both feet or just the worse one?
I’d love to hear what everyone has experienced because it seems like there isn’t one simple answer.

Is it common to have a bunion on only one foot?

I always thought bunions happened to both feet, but apparently it’s pretty common for one foot to develop one years before the other. Things like previous injuries, favoring one leg, foot mechanics, or even differences in how you walk can all play a role.
For those of you who only have one bunion:
How long has it stayed on just one foot?
Did the other foot eventually develop one too?
Have wider shoes, orthotics, or toe spacers actually helped?
If you had surgery, did you choose to fix just one foot or both?
I’m curious to hear everyone’s experiences because it seems like there’s a lot of conflicting information online.
