Ive seen many post asking about what doll do they need when reaching the boreal valley, I also fell victim. Finding the cathedral is not as straightforward as finding farron keep. I believe the road of sacrifices area was rushed / changed late into development so perhaps this is why many people have this issue on first play through. Back tracking that much just ruins progression up to that point and doesn’t seem intentional.

For the cathedral being such a large / necessary area youd think it have a much more grand or obvious entrance. Anyone else feel this way?
