Best Organizations for Java & Spring Boot Developers? (+ Looking for a Study/Prep Partner!)
Hey everyone!
I am planning ahead and targeting Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2027. My primary tech stack is Java and Spring Boot, and I want to start building my profile, contributing to open-source repositories, and connecting with communities early to maximize my chances of acceptance.
I have two main goals with this post:
- Which Organizations Should I Target?
I am looking for recommendations on established GSoC organizations that heavily utilize Java and Spring Boot.
Ideally, I'm looking for orgs that:
- Participate consistently year after year.
- Have active, welcoming mentor communities.
- Feature projects ranging from backend microservices to enterprise tooling.
Some organizations I am already looking into include The Apache Software Foundation, Eclipse Foundation, and Jenkins, but I would love to know if there are specific sub-projects or other orgs (like Mifos or OWASP) that are a perfect match for a Spring Boot developer.
- Looking for a GSoC 2027 Partner / Study Buddy
Prepping for GSoC can be a long grind, and it's much easier to stay accountable when working with someone else. I am looking for a partner (or a small group) to team up with!
What we can do together:
- Keep each other accountable for daily/weekly open-source contributions.
- Review each other's code and pull requests (PRs).
- Brainstorm, review, and refine our GSoC project proposals.
- Share resources, tips, and git strategies.
If you are also aiming for GSoC 2027—whether you use Java or a completely different stack—and want to partner up to make this work, drop a comment below or shoot me a DM!
