Friday, I took a road trip, first time using HDA. Is there a way to adjust it?
On Friday, I went to a sushi buffet at my old town for my birthday. I'd only had my 26 Calligraphy for a week, of which a couple days it was in a shop getting a protector for the hood and front end (invisible bra) so I'd have about 3-4 hours of highway driving to get used to that aspect of driving it.
While I've had a couple times driving with my mom's 21 Subaru Ascent that had something comparable to HDA, it seemed to fight me and just be poorly configured. Hitting the button to make cruise control accelerate made it jump 5 MPH instead of 1 (had to hold it for 1MPH increments), it complained if it thought I was too close to lines, etc. I just drove with those things turned off, and just handled cruise control adjustments manually instead. I'm told on her new 26 Ascent, CC adjustments are "normal", though I haven't had a chance to drive it.
So, I was definitely looking forward to seeing how it would work on the Santa Fe. I was very pleasantly surprised at how pleasant the experience was...though it didn't like me leaning my head back against the headrests (complained I needed to keep my eyes on the road when they were), and apparently my hands weren't applying enough pressure to the wheel (though they certainly never left it).
It changing lanes when I would use the turn signal was a very unexpected surprise, and took some getting used to.
But, driving it lead me to a couple conclusions. It's a bit too conservative on when to slow down when approaching another car. It'd start slowing down before I would if I were doing it all manually, because I'd know I was planning on changing lanes...and it's more aggressive on the lane changes when it actually changes lanes.
Is there a way to tweak these things? Or combine them?
I figure there's probably a setting in how close before it makes adjustments. I know there's a distance thing that it mentions that I haven't played with.
Let's say it takes 5 seconds to change lanes. Is there a way to have it make those changes more gradually, like say over 10 seconds?
Is there a way, since it has sensors everywhere, it can know to change lanes if it's available and safe (obstruction free) rather than slowing down when it reaches whatever threshold it's configured to?
I didn't have enough traffic to really be able to test these things out on Friday...and I'm not exactly keen on strangers being unwitting test subjects.
