HEA

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here was working with or was interested in High Enthropy Alloys/Oxides. I came across the idea and was wondering of its applications and if it is worth the trouble to synthesize (economically speaking for anything it might be used). My understanding of it is that we put a bucketload of cations in a confined space which creates a lot of electron sharing, vacancies etc. that can make for a decently reactive actuve centres catalysts and whatnot. I was just wondering what you would have to say. If this is a type of question I shouldn't ask here - let me know (because I suppose I could just spend more time on wikipedia, but I'm just curious about it coming from chemists).

Orbitals, energy, quantum behaviour

If you were a college student (that knows the bare minimum of underlying knowledge about this topic) about to meet with a professor specializing in quantum chemistry, orbitals, energy etc. and wanted to take oit from the conversation as much as possible, what questions would you ask?

I know this is vague, so:

  1. I wanted to learn how to calculate the energy of specific compounds/their orbitals to explain to myself more profusely why f.e. there isn't a stable counterpart of thiophene with a phosphorous atom; how d orbitals allow for autocondensation of molybdates, or breaking the octet rule

So how to solve wave equations for specific energy cases.

  1. I'm trying to understand/visualize orbitals/electrons more clearly. Why we're explaining orbitals via physical deffinitions of waves (if electrons/orbitals don't exactly behave as waves would do)

  2. understanding of homo/lumo in conjugates of p/d orbitals

That's more or less what I had in mind. But I truly want to be more specific about the questions, because it's important to me and I might not get a second chance like that.

I realize I don't have a specific quedtion, but maybe you can help in some way anyway. Thanks in advance
