10 Years Out of High School: Advice from an engineer
Hi guys,
It’s been about 10 years since I finished high school, and looking back, there are a few things I wish someone had told me earlier. I eventually got a six figure salary, but the path was definitely not easy. Here are the 4 things I wish knew:
Grades Matter in University for Coop. Most people graduate with out coop, that puts you so far behind anyone with actual engineering expereince from coops.
Connections will help you land jobs. During your unersity studies, help others. Just to keep a bond, so when you guys graduate. You can count on them for help getting a job. Don't get friends who will not help you, or make effort to get you a job.
Expect to relocate. Alot of companies in the U.S are still hiring aggressively for manufacturing positions. Just an example. Vista solutions is a canadian company that provides vision engineering support to GM, FORD, stellantis and so on. Getting to be the guy the installs and programs smart cameras will put you in the right door. Indicon, fives, etc., are all good companies too look out for.
Don't give up. Always submit your work. Alot of people expect you to give up, dont. Find a deep motivation to help you get through the sleepless nights now.
If you want to knwo my career path its uoit grad, screw vision operator, vision engineer, mechanical engineer at ford. avg salary for my type work is 150k cad ish. Not the best, but not bad either imo.
