Boekhandel Dominicanen is overrated for actually reading and Wyck has better bookshops for browsing
Hear me out - I know the church bookstore is on every tourist list and it looks incredible, that massive stained glass window filtering light over the shelves, the gothic arches, your instagram followers will love it. But every time I go there it's packed with people taking photos, the layout makes zero sense for actually finding anything, and the selection is honestly pretty standard bestseller stuff with some dutch literature mixed in. There's this cosy little spot in Wyck, smaller, no tourists, and the owners actually leave you alone to browse instead of bumping past you with tote bags. The whole Dominicanen experience feels more like visiting a museum exhibit called 'bookstore' than an actual place where you discover new books. I walked in last saturday looking for translated dutch sci-fi and the person working there had no idea what I meant, just pointed me to a general fiction shelf and went back to their phone. Walked over to Wyck, asked the same question at a smaller shop, and got a whole conversation about classic dutch authors and whether I'd tried Thomas Olde Heuvelt yet. I get why people love the aesthetic and if you want a coffee table book or a souvenir its fine. But for actual readers its kinda frustrating. The architecture deserves better books inside it honestly.
