Which timing do you use for Vals?

When hitting a double time step in vals, do you personally tend to step on 1-2-1, or 1-3-1? Or does it change depending on the particular step or the dynamic you want?

Are you a leader or a follower?

As a leader, for steps where the follower is stepping double time independently of the leader (e.g. giro or basic cross) do you try to lead the double time step specifically on the 2 or 3, or do you leave it more open to the follower's interpretation?

I observe that most students, if left to their own devices, will settle on 1-2-1.

Eridian aversion to social eating doesn't quite make sense...

Was it explained why Eridian culture has an aversion to social eating? It doesn't quite make sense because:

a) they're a social species so they'll be in close proximity to one another most of the time, and

b) if they're close, they'll be able to observe each other all the time no matter what, right, because of their 360 degree, passive, see-through-walls sound wave spatial processing. I guess Eridian can't "look away", might not even be able to "close their eyes".

I guess there might be technological materials solutions for creating impenetrable rooms (the fact that Rocky started with multiple xenonite variants in the tunnel wall to test which panels Grace could hear through suggests that there are some materials Eridians can't hear through). It *seems* as though it's unlikely that they would have evolved with a lot of materials like that around though, as there would probably be an evolutionary pressure to continue to evolve better and better signal processing to hear through as much as possible. And so I would imagine that the aversion to observing eating could not be evolutionarily instinctive.

But on the other hand, perhaps once technology offered sufficiently sound-blocking materials, it really took off and radically reshaped culture, as something that offered privacy (i.e. secrecy and deception) for the first time would be revolutionary for a social species...

Just musing! What do you think?

(Forgive me if the answer is in the book, I've only listened to audiobook and it's difficult to find passages again to check)
