I love Dolphin Service Menus so much
I'm currently in the process of scanning and archiving hundreds and hundreds of my grandparents' photographs, documents, drawings, newspaper and magazine clippings (my grandfather was a bit of a hoarder :)). Making some custom scripts with ImageMagick and Fred's ImageMagick has made my life so much easier. Once you understand how it works under the hood, you can turn them into service menus that live in your context menu in Dolphin. Instead of spending hours manually cropping out individual images and documents, I now have some tools that do that for me:
- 'Split' is used to cut A3 scans into two A4 documents when necessary
- 'Cut Whitespace' is self-explanatory: it checks and removes bands of white space on all sides
- 'Extract Photos' use the multicrop function, basically extracting multiple images from a scan if there is whitespace between them
- 'Straighten' is used to unrotate images (only if it's off by a few degrees, not perfect)
Some other general service menus I use often:
- Move file(s) to parent folder
- Move to new folder (prompts window for new name)
- Move file to Folder of Same Name
- Zip folder to cbz
- Make file executable
The only thing that I haven't figured out yet is how to make submenus in submenus? Is it even possible to split, for example, 'Convert to...' in another tab with the options? If so, please enlighten me how :)
Turning all the comics and graphic novels that I own into a base
My grandfather passed away a couple of months ago and I inherited a lot of his comics. In order to document what I already own, what I've read, which ones I can resell, etc... I made individual notes for each comic (using webclipper to clip info from either comicvine or stripinfo.be). I add some custom metadata like the cover image (which is resized to a webP of 30kb and stored locally in vault), tags like status (completed, want to read, dnf) and owned_status (physical, digital, sold, double). All comics belonging to a series have a separate series view with the formula series == this.file, so it automatically displays all comics that have the same name in the 'series' property.
I also the type of person that takes notes on every type of media I consume, so I write a short reviews or some interesting quotes down for basically everything I read nowadays.
Weird colored pixels below title bar using Klassy for window decorations
I love Klassy because it looks great and is very customisable. But since upgrading to Plasma 6.7 I noticed some weird behaviour below the title bar. Sometimes it looks like the background bleeds through, giving a very small line (like 1 pixel) below the title bar. Just now I also noticed this weird behaviour of random pixels appearing below the minimise and maximise button, which disappear when I move the window or rescale it. Any idea what might cause this? I'm on Fedora 44, using KDE Plasma 6.7.0
Edit:
I just checked the github page, and it seems to be a known bug. I think it will be fixed in Plasma 6.7.1

Bach's little preludes are the perfect difficulty level for me currently (BWV 933, first part)
Bach has a whole bunch of short preludes, which I find both very instructive and also a lot of fun to play. Forgive me for the awkward camera angles. I just recorded it with my phone.
Rebinding old European comics
My grandfather passed away a couple of months ago and I got a whole bunch of old comics from him. Most of them are in good condition, but there are also some that have completely separated at the spine, with loose pages and even missing covers.
I want to restore 20-ish of these comics, all franco-belgian softcovers and one hardcover. I have no bookbinding experience whatsoever, except for when I was younger I used to make my own scrapbooks by tying paper together and gluing a spine to it.
I don't need these to be super fancy, I just want to restore them so they look decent and can be used for reading again.
In the post I included a pic of some example comics and what state they are in, some spines, and a little jar of book binding glue that I bought. How do I tackle this project? If anyone has tips, tricks or experience, I'm all ears :)
When I heard about Euro-Office, I got excited and made these icons
I know the whole suite is in its early stages, and probably won't be released for a long time... but hey, a man can dream.
The basic idea is it incorporates an E (Euro) and an O (Office). Fot the colors I used the usual suspects, but slightly more vibrant. The icons themselves are still a bit messy (the line weight is not the same), but I made this in my spare time on a Sunday afternoon, so please cut me some slack.
If anyone wants to use them or edit them, I put the files in a Github Gist. You could also use them for LibreOffice if you really want.
I’m talking about ‘The Library at Mount Char’. I finished it yesterday, and I’m still in awe. It might be my favourite novel I’ve ever read… like EVER. It’s so weird, so captivating, so imaginative, so wickedly funny, but also frickin DARK at times. The dialogue is very Tarantino-esque, and the writing overall feels very cinematic. Every chapter I was like: no way he can top this scene (I’m looking at you ‘The Luckiest Chicken in the World’ chapter) and then he just cranks everything up a notch and leaves you gasping for more.
I read this poignant review somewhere else on Reddit, and I have to share it because it kinda goes hard: “The Library at Mount Char is the book Gaiman wishes he could write”.
I’m so excited for Hawkins’ next book, Blacktail, which is set for release in September 2026.
