HSOTD: Revisiting Fatip’s Lo Sorto

HSOTD: Revisiting Fatip’s Lo Sorto

Razor: Fatip Lo Sorto
Blade: Gillette 7 o’clock, super platinum
Brush: Noble Otter, synthetic.
Soap: B&M Le Grand Chypre
Post: PAA Mysterium serum + COSRX ceramide barrier moisture/repair cream

I’m chilling out on the BBS head shaves after feeling my scalp getting rawer and rawer after every shave, even though I was spacing them 3 to 4 days apart. This is giving me the opportunity to revisit razors that I’ve had around that may have been good, but not smooth/gentle enough to give an irritation-free 3+ pass shave.

The Lo Soto was exactly that. No matter which blade I used, The ATG/touchup passes with it would leave me feeling pretty raw. However, on a two pass shave it is really, really nice. Very smooth and very efficient. I even managed a couple of touchups that veered on ATG in some of the denser areas, and they came out feeling great.

Because of the built-up irritation, I’ve been focusing my aftershave routine on repair. Mysterium serum has a lot of skin goodies in it and absorbs quickly so I can help my scalp immediately after the shave. 5-10 minutes later, The COSRX ceramide cream is a pretty hard-core barrier repair moisturizer formulated in the Korean skincare industry, who I maintain is light years ahead of anything we are doing. Especially at the artisan level.

All the post shave stuff was unscented, which suited me just fine as B&M soap fragrances tend to sit on me for a while, and Le Grand Chypre is such a fantastic scent, I wouldn’t want anything to get in it’s way

Head SOTD: a little experiment

Prep: Proraso Crema Pre Barba (Sensitive)
Soap/Gel: Lazy Society Vita Shaving Gel Bright
Razor: Merkur Futur
Blade: Gillette Seven O’Clock Black (3rd use)
Post: Lazy Society Cica After-Shave Lotion

My scalp has been a little more stingy after my head shaves lately, so I thought I’d try something different. The Lazy Society gel has been working wonders when I shave my super sensitive neck, so I thought I’d give it a shot up top.

It actually worked really well. Very smooth, TONS of cushion and glide, and left my scalp feeling nourished and refreshed. The Korean skin care lines really do know their stuff. They are light years ahead of the rest of the world with all this.

That carried through to the post save too. The Cica lotion is just lovely. 10,000ppm madecassoside + panthenol, no alcohol, absorbs in seconds and leaves everything feeling fresh.

HSOTD: 7 O’Clock black ftw

Razor: Merkur Futur
Blade: Gillette 7 o’clock super platinum
Brush: Noble Otter synthetic
Soap: Noble Otter Jasmine Green Tea
Post shave: PAA Mysterium Serum

My neighborhood hasn’t smelled like jasmine for a few weeks, but this soap still felt like it was the move for today. Love the summer florals of this one — I really do need to pick up a full tub before my samples run out.

I I picked up a tuck of 7 o’clock Blacks and have been working my way through it for a few weeks. Where have these blades been my whole wet shaving life?! So smooth and really sharp. They are the answer I’ve been looking for. Made the already smooth Futur (yes, that’s right) even smoother and more efficient. So much, that I was able to skip the wtg plays and go straight to XTG. These might be my perfect blade…

Alum block quality differences?

I’ve been using Proraso alum blocks since I started. Not for any particular reason other than they’re easily available and familiar. I just left on a trip, and decided to take a block that has a case to make it easier for travel, so I got the one from Gentleman Jon.

With my Proraso, I get stung a lot. I always use it as a barometer/vibe check to tell me if I’m over shaving any areas, or getting sloppy with my technique. And it is happy to tell me every time, especially on BBS days.

But with this new one I barely get anything. I’m now three shaves in to my trip, and every single time the block barely gave me a tingle. I’ve had plenty of shaves with no stinging afterward, but within three shaves, I usually will feel *something* somewhere. This last one I even nicked myself, and not only did it not sting, but it didn’t seem too close up the nick either.

I’ve always thought alum was alum, but now I am wondering: there is a quality difference between brands? Does anyone have more insight or experience with this?

My humble blade stash

Might be late to the party, but i’m also apparently still building up to the magnificent collections that you all have. I would love to start a conversation about how you organize/store them though. I picked up this fishing lure box on Amazon, and only kind of like it for the job. What do you all use?

HSOTD: first slim shave

Razor: Gillette Slim Adjustable
Blade:Astra
Brush: Simpson T3 Synthetic
Soap: Leaf Fig
Post: Dr. Jart+ Cicapair

My partner just gifted me and immaculately kept Slim Adjustable for my birthday and I couldn’t wait to try it. I think I was a little over enthusiastic and moved a little too fast through my shave. After a few weeks focusing on my Futur, I had a little trouble keeping my angle with the Slim, which led to some skipping and subsequent irritation by the end. I’m going to need to spend the next couple of weeks getting more natural with it — both the angle, settings, and probably blade as well.

Since I finished with some visible irritation, I forwent the usual balms and opted for the Cicapair moisturizer. That stuff is magic. All the redness was gone within an hour.

HSOTD: the new baseline

Razor: Merkur Futur
Blade: Gillette Nacet (2nd use)
Soap: Martin de Candre Vetiver
Brush: Noble Otter 26mm synthetic
Post: PAA Mysterium Serum

If I could only have one configuration for my head shaves this would be it (minus a few tweaks, of course)

I usually use Astra SP, and I’m trying to find something sharper that doesn’t sacrifice any of the smoothness. The Nacet is the closest I’ve found so far but it’s giving me just a bit of alum sting, so my search continues for now.

MdC’s Vetiver is becoming my new favorite soap. The scent is incredible — almost floral, with none of the resinous heaviness that usually comes with vetiver. The sample has a couple shaves left in it, but I don’t know if I can justify the cost of a $70 jar when I still have so many other soaps in the den. Might be time for a trip to the BSTs/Bazaars…

What else do you find works like it?

It took me a few shaves to understand it, but once I did I found it to have an incredible combination of smoothness, gentleness, and efficiency that almost none of my other razors seem to have. Something in the combination of angle, exposure, and gap just works for me. I’ve found that the Parker Variant Open Comb is the only other razor I have that feels that way — and that’s only when I have it set between 4 and 5 (my Futur is usually somewhere between 3 and 4).

So what else is out there that feels like that? I’d especially like to know if there are any non-adjustables in that zone. I have other super efficient efficient razors like the Meteorite and Game Changer with their more aggressive plates, but they all feel harsher in one way or another and leave me with more sting at the end.

It seemed that the Futur is one of those razors that isn’t for everyone, but the people like me who jive with it, really jive with it. I’d love to hear what other folks who like it also like.

So what’s good?
