Dumas Cub Coupe is almost done

Need to finish the cowling, fitting the landing gear and windshield, and then decide on wheel spats and decals.

It’s been a fun build and I’ve relearned many of the lessons my Grandfather first taught me 20 years ago.

Added the wheel struts… the clothes iron was much more of a liability here, but I like the look

At worst I can redo them when they inevitably crack from a hard landing. I’m happy with the overall look, they such an integral part of the iconic Cub look. I learned to fly in a Cub, so it only seems right that my first RC build was also a Cub.

Motor shaft isn’t long enough

*Insert obligatory that’s what she said joke here*

So I finally got the motor installed and I’m getting to work on the fuselage. The motor fits nicely, but the shaft isn’t near long enough to fit the prop! What do I do? Can I make a thicker motor mount and get a bit more clearance that way? Help?

DX7se compatible with AS3X+?

Basically the title.

I am building a new plane with an AR630+ receiver. I am sure that I can bind the DX7se to the receiver, but my question really is about the AS3X+. Can I use one of the transmitters 3 position switches to have On / 50% / Off ?

Or is the transmitter too old to play nice with the newest AS3X+?

Looking for a new transmitter

Basically the title. I currently have an AeroScout and am building a Cub from a balsa kit. Current Tx is the DXs that came with my AeroScout. I plan to mostly fly my own builds, but would like the ability to fly Horizon Hobby PNP planes - the Aeronca Champ that they just came out with looks amazing.

I have read great things about Radiomaster. If I had my druthers, I’d get a Boxer 4 in 1, but that doesn’t appear to be available from new nor is it a good deal on the used market. The Pocket I can’t find in 4 in 1 either. The TX16 seems like a bit more than I need and frankly I am a bit intimidated by it and it’s huge. So, the Radiomaster Zorro 4 in 1 looks pretty perfect. I love the compact size, it comes in 4 in 1 and appears to do everything I need. The price for a new transmitter is appealing as well.

All that said, moving away from the ease of the Spektrum environment is a bit intimidating. I think I can do it, plenty of others have. But, I’m considering a preowned Spektrum transmitter. Someone is offering a Dx7se with a couple receivers for $100, but the fact it’s an older generation gives me pause. I’ve found a Dx6i for $75 that seems like it might be a good choice?

So, ye learned ones of the RC world: what do you think? Should I be worried about getting out of the Spektrum environment? What do you think is my best choice?

Kin Additive Monster Scout

Got out and got to fly my AeroScout with the Kin Additive taildragger conversion and bush wheels aka “MonsterScout”. It was a lot of fun, but boy it sure does change the CG! The monster wheels are 30 grams each compared to 10 each for the stock wheels.

Overall it was fun, but the monster wheels I don’t think made enough of a difference to make the weight penalty worth it. I put the stock wheels back on, and while it certainly doesn’t look as cool, I expect it will fly much more nicely.

Power Pack Equivalency -- newbie questions!

tldr: need to decide on a power pack to power my first kit built RC plane.

Plane: https://www.vintagemodelcompany.com/42-balsa-basics-super-cub-4ch-trainer

VMC recommended Power Pack (don't want to pay int'l shipping): https://www.vintagemodelcompany.com/standard-electronics-pack-b

FliteTest Power Pack Radial v.2: https://store.flitetest.com/ft-power-pack-b-radial-v-2/

TotsRC Power Pack XT60: https://totsrc.com/products/a2217-1100kv-40a-4s-esc-4x-mg90s-servos-w-10x4-5-prop?variant=42253353091315

I loved building balsa planes when I was a kid -- mostly smaller and simpler ones. One Christmas when I was around 10 or so I got a kit for a big glider, and at the time it seemed like it was massive. The kit was a bit too complex for me to tackle by myself at that age, and I made a mess of it and became more and more frustrated until the whole thing wound up in long term storage. That experience turned me off of balsa building, and it wasn't until recently that I rediscovered the hobby.

I've built numerous smaller craft since the start of the year, and have discovered that building with patience and precision results in a much nicer looking and nicer flying aircraft than one that is rushed -- lack of patience and lack of precision were the problems that 10 year old Nintenderloin had! I've built a number of all balsa chuck gliders, from my own designs, from kits, and from OuterZone. I've also built a few Free Flight kits, all from Dumas. I bought myself an AeroScout and re-taught myself how to fly an RC Plane. The goal of relearning to fly and teaching myself the building skills was intended to allow me to build an RC balsa kit.

I purchased a kit for the Vintage Model Company Super Cub and it was delivered today (much faster than I thought it would be!). I've been going back and forth on how I should power the model. VMC has a recommended Power Pack, but I am not too keen on spending a ton of money on international shipping when I can find similar products domestically.

I am looking at the FliteTest Power Pack B Radial v.2. It looks like the motor is similar in power, and it has the correct size of servos. A big plus is that this kit does not require any soldering, as I do not have the equipment and do not have any experience soldering. The 4 servos are 9g, which is the size VMC recommends, it includes servo extensions, Y harness, and linkage stoppers. What gives me pause is that it includes is a 25 Amp ESC, not a 40A like in the VMC Power Pack. Additionally, the props are 9x4.5, whereas from VMC they are 10x5.

The other option I am looking at is from TotsRC, they have a power pack with an A2217 1100kv motor, 40A 4s ESC, 4x MG90s Servos w/10x4.5 Prop, XT60. So the motor is slightly more powerful than the 1000kv from VMC, the ESC is the same amperage, but the servos are 20 grams and have metal gear, compared to the VMC and FT servos that are both 9g and are plastic gears.

I am planning on using a Spektrum receiver with whichever Power Pack I end up running as I am hoping I can connect this plane the Spektrum DXe transmitter than came with the AeroScout. If I cannot connect to that tx, I will purchase either a new Radiomaster Zorro 4 in 1, or used Boxer 4 in 1, or a used TX16s 4 in 1.

Anyways, I would really appreciate your help or thoughts about the best way to power my new toy!
