AI generated charcoal art

Hi again folks, we've reduced the number of bots posting by a lot but due to the nature of this type of art we are getting a lot of accusations of AI for some of our hyper realistic artwork.

This is a really difficult area and I do go into user profiles and history and even to other platforms to check when there are accusations. But there will be false negatives and false positives so we need to work through things together.

  1. Do not harrass others I know it's frustrating but if you suspect AI please report it to me or message me. If you hate it enough I am looking to hand over the mod role to someone once this is all set up.

  2. I am experimenting with an AI detection app so please be patient as we work out if this is a good fit. To be honest people are accusing all sorts of things as being AI and I know that no apps are very accurate at the moment.

  3. I am considering changing the rules to request that posters include information about how the artwork was made and maybe even an unedited image of the artwork with the username and date. This still won't stop determined people and will reduce activity in the sub so I'm waiting to see how the app goes.

Thanks for your support

Help with rules to confirm artwork is not AI

I'm a new mod for r/charcoaldrawing which often features hyper realistic artwork.

Community members often report this style of artwork as AI and harrass artists and myself, even when it's poorly made. From post histories and sleuthing I usually determine that most are OK but it's really difficult.

I want to create a rule for the sub that stops this type of harrassment and allows artists to demonstrate their art is real (and weed out fakes). Can you suggest what I might ask users to include when they post? I am not sure whether to ask for written info (ie no low effort posts, info on how it was made etc), or an image to demonstrate that the artwork is real (don't know what, maybe a username and date with the art?). Are there things to ask for that really weed people out?

I'm a new mod (long time Reddit user) so am not familiar with my options aside from those baked in to the mod tools.

Showcase: Show us where you started

Hi folks, we see so many extraordinary artworks in this community, but we rarely get to see all the practice that came before that.

So I'm encouraging community members to share a then and now moment.

Share two artworks as a response to this post. Reddit allows only one image per comment so post the first and respond to yourself, or create an image to show both side by side:

  1. Then: when you first started working with charcoal, or drawing generally if that's a better example.

  2. Now: an example of your current work

You may be one of our more popular contributors or just starting out, I want to encourage everyone to participate and celebrate the effort we take to learn and grow.

I will select my favourite beginner and experienced artist contributions and add them to our community highlights collection.

New rules re WIPs and explicit art

Hi folks, firstly thank you to the artists and community members who are helping to create this nice community. Even though we are needing to tailor the subreddit rules it’s because we have enthusiastic artists and members wanting to engage. It’s with this in mind that I’ve added these two rules. I don’t want to hamper artists sharing their art however community members are asking for a way that allows us to have a diverse feed.

I’ve added an NSFW rule to exclude explicit content - both sexual and gore. I’ve suggested this could be like the movies in which there’s no R or X rated content. Moderating this will be at my discretion but I welcome input/flags so I can tailor the content to suit the community’s preferences.

Also, I’ve added a rule about WIP posting in which I’ve suggested that they are welcome where large changes have been made or the artist is looking for feedback or support. I am hoping this will strike a good balance between artists wanting engagement and community members feeds being diverse.

The screenshot shows the actual wording. Your feedback is encouraged.

Community updates

Hi again folks, I’ve been in place as the new mod for a week or so now and wanted to share what I’ve done so far and get feedback from you.

Good stuff
- I’ve decided to highlight some artwork that I love as pinned highlight posts. At the moment I’m choosing them on a whim as my personal benefit of volunteering for this mod job 😁
- Added the ability to insert images, gifs, videos in comments
- other suggestions for good stuff are welcome - low time and energy options will work well.

Added community rules - I’ve just added three new community rules
- Artwork must be primarily charcoal
- No impersonating or plagiarism
- No AI generated images
These will be auto enforced so please let me know if they miss the mark or you would like more.

Added filters for new members
- New members must have some reputation on reddit prior to posting

Changed the NSFW posting rule
I updated the community rules to allow posting NSFW artwork. As we say in Australia “don’t take the piss”.

I feel like I’ve noticed less spam - have you noticed a change? Let me know if you have other feedback.

New mod incoming and community updates

Hi folks, we’ve had a long time being used as a karma farm with little moderator input so I volunteered to mod the community.

Please bear with me while I get up to speed. I’m a new mod so need to learn. I’ve started making changes but they will not happen all at once. I’m hoping this won’t need much active moderation and this remains a chill community.

My main priority right now is to reduce the karma farming and AI garbage.

Other than that I am also going to remove the NSFW posting restriction so legit charcoal artwork including figure studies can be shared more easily within reason.

If you have ideas for improving the sub, or would like to moderate please let me know in the comments.

Also, for transparency I am using an alt account to keep things tidy, my main account is u/borrowingfork if you would like to check my history of participation in the community.
