Agitation when being woken from induced coma after liver transplant

Hi,

My dad had his liver transplant a few days ago and there were some complications - significant blood loss, low blood pressure etc so whilst they completed the transplant after a lot of hours they had to do the closure a couple of days later by taking him back to theatre. After the initial operation he was put in an induced coma.

My question relates to now, they have been trying to ‘wake’ him the last couple of days by reducing sedation etc to see if he can breathe well with the use of oxygen mask rather than a ventilator. However they’ve had issues with trying to get him to wake. They did try again today and said he was ‘agitated’ and seemed to be shaking his head back and forth.

Does anyone have any idea what’s going on? Is this some form of ICU delirium? Will he be ok?

Complications with liver transplant incision left open

Dad had his liver transplant yesterday. Took a lot longer than anticipated due to complications - lost a lot of blood, blood pressure drops etc. The surgeons have put him in an induced coma for now and used a vaccum seal and the plan is to have him back in theatre in the next 48 hours to check there is no more bleeding and close the incision.

Has anyone else been through this?

Dads just gone down to theatre for his liver transplant

Hi,

I have posted on here previously and got some lovely support of other users going through similar!

After 3 calls for a liver transplant and them being no good for transplant today is the day they’ve finally got one that’s suitable to use for my dad and so he’s gone down to theatre!

Unfortunately I am not there with him due to being in South Wales with my children but he does have my mum and partner with him. It’s frustrating not being able to be there with him and to support my mum. So many mixed emotions - happiness that he’s finally getting a transplant after seeing him so unwell over the last year or so but also worry and apprehension about whether he will pull through it ok and the recovery.

Was hoping to get others experience of this, I’d be so grateful. What can we expect going forward? I know they’ve said he will be in intensive care for a bit etc, is my mum able to stay at the hospital or will she have to leave? Its Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham that he’s having the transplant in.
