weird qn but how do i pat a gerb properly?

My 3 gerbs let me pat them and give scratches while they eat and when they are in their home but i feel so awkward doing it and im scared im not patting them correctly. Also how do i gain their trust because their kinda skittish whenever i walk up to the enclosure and only 2/3 of them climb onto my arm😢

is his fur normal?

4 months+ boy, is his fur normal? I know maybe he’s greasy but it’s a little concerning to me as just 3 hours ago his fur wasn’t like this.. He is eating normally running around and his mates are grooming him. Can someone reassure me😭🙏 Just a over concerned fur parent

also his brother who is the same age also isn’t like this (2nd pic)

gerbil with greasy fur

4 month old boy, i realised recently him and his brother both have quite greasy fur even tho i started changing their sand once every 2 days so maybe they can clean themselves better. Not sure why because it’s quite sudden.

What can i do to make the space bigger vertically?

100x50x50 enclosure, i have 3 pups now so they are relatively small but i’m hoping to add vertical space (since i don’t have much room for horizontal space) As they grow bigger. Any advice would be lovely!

are pups harder to tame?

i have a 2 month old and two 3 month old boys and they don’t really let me pet them, i give them treats and whenever they eat they allow me to pet them a little and they can eat on my palm. Just wondering will they come to trust me more as they grow older?
