Tips for Each IB Course I took (IB40)
- IB Math AI HL: Study in advance! This is one of the more content heavy courses in the IBDP and trying to balance studying for IB AI and other IB courses was really overwhelming. As an M26, I did most studying for this course in February and never studied again (apart from mocks). Make sure you know differential equations, HL statistics, complex numbers before the exams! Also, on the exam if you don't know how to approach it, still do your best to write down a formula or explain the steps you would take (attempt points are crucial!).
- IB Biology HL: HL biology has possibly one of the largest curricula in all the IB, I mean the amount of content you have to learn for this class is crazy. Learning all the content in this course is really the only way to get a 7 (unlike in chemistry, any topic has a chance of being tested on). Bio Ninja helped me immensely with summarizing each topic in a digestible way. I would go to Bio Ninja then go to past papers and find related questions on the topics I learned about. Also, please be familiar with bio-math and experimental techniques (respirometry!!)!
- IB Chemistry SL: This was by far the most challenging yet rewarding course I took. My main piece of advice is take all the mocks you can. IB loves to recycle questions for some reason in this course and if you take a look at past papers, literally 10 select topics are guaranteed to show up across all the past papers. Other than that, P1B was the largest jump scare. Know your experimental techniques; I found the oxford textbook for chemistry had a great section for teaching me this!
- IB English Literature HL: For paper 2, I wouldn't be worried about finding 3-4 books which you can pull different themes from. I only prepared 2 books in which I found super broad overlapping themes that were applicable to really any scenario. Don't be afraid to kind of 'manipulate' the prompt in favor of a specific theme (only do this when it's reasonable!).
- IB French B HL: Lock in on the IO imo. That's probably the most challenging assessment for this course. Study important passages (annotate) and have idioms prepared for each passage. For writing, make sure you know all the text types (and their translation) and have a plan for the way you will write/draw each text type on the examination paper.
- IB ESS SL: Learn your specific examples. IB ESS wants you to reference real-world applications and examples in order to gain higher marks on the longer response questions. Most of the content in this course was really logic-based to me, so I'd really hone in on those examples and the IA of course.
- IB History SL: Prepare for which sections you're going to choose on paper 1 and 2. For example, I looked at all the past paper 2s, both May and Nov, for the past 5 years for topic 10 and 12 and noted which events were most asked about. Also, for paper 2, prepare 3 societies which you would be confident in talking about. For me, I picked Mao's China, Mussolini's Italy, and Hitler's Germany and I created Venn diagrams to highlight their similarities and differences across key IB themes.
For anyone wondering, I got my 7s in biology, math AI, chemistry, and French.
